I received the letter too. I thought the verbiage was odd and I called the number on the back of my american express card. It's confirmed American Express did not send this. It is a SCAM! I googled the number they asked to call which is 855-693-2213 that was on the letter and it is foreign.

I received the same letter.  I called the number on the back of my card and was told that Amex did not send the letters.  My friend got one as well, Amex told her the same thing.  These letters are a fraud.  Amex has put alerts on all my accounts.

I received the letter and called the # indicated (not the # on the back of the card).  Something did not seem correct with the call so I hung up and called the # on the back of the card.  American Express had NOT sent the letter.  I asked them to cancel my card and send be a new one.

I got the same letter and called the Amex number on the back of my card and they checked and found that the phone number on my notice was legit so they told me to call them whch I did.  I also told them that it was signed by Stefanie Wulwick.
When I called the number on the letter they asked me if the number on my letter was my account number and like you it wasn't.  They told me that it was the number of an old account I had which was closed a long time ago and that the company who had the info on it reported a breach to their system so I was also notified as a result by Amex. Since that account was closed long ago it does not affect me.

I also receive similar letter in the mail. It is signed by Stefanie Wulwick, Privacy Officer at Amex. The letter is exactly word by word similar to what I found at California Justice Department website: http://oag.ca.gov/system/files/Tropical%20Traditions_0.pdf. But the last 6 digits of my account number mentioned in the letter does not match with my Amex card. That is what made me suspicious. I haven't called Amex yet, but I am sure this is fraud mail.

We just got the letter too, and it is a SCAM. The card # in the letter did not match our usable cards. We called Amex # on the back of our card and were told that they sent out nothing, and have been receiving other inquiries too. In the past, if there was any suspicious activity on our account, they called us, which made this letter suspect. We also have our account setup to send emails when the card is used.  We are sending them a scan of the letter and envelope for their fraud investigation.  The email address Amex gave us was: spoof@americanexpress.com

The letter is legit, it was sent by American Express. I called not this number but the number on my card. It means that the security of a merchandise you bought  stuff from was compromised --simply that someone you did business with and paid with your card got your information stolen from his system-  and American Express is monitoring your card activity. Nothing for you to do, they will keep monitoring your card activity. Hope this information helps.

I received a letter from "American Express" that I believe is a scam/. It looks very legit but the numbers to call are not the ones given on the back of the cards. I'm going to call Amex regarding this but beware.
