I received a check for $250. When I called the phone number on the check I received the customer service dept for merchant services. They told me it was for an automatic payment I set up on my Bank of America account.
It took me a few minutes, then I remembered that I had set up an automatic payment (check) to be sent to me from my small business account so I would avoid paying a monthly service charge on the account.
Glad I didn't shred the check.

By the way.  We are wondering since we seen some people say one thing and some say another.  It actually makes sense because it is a processing center.  So where the customer sending me a check seems legit thus far.  I wonder if debt collectors are using the processing center to get to people too.  So just be careful and especially IF you were not expecting a check from anyone (We at least knew we were getting a check because we spoke to the customer). to always double and triple check everything on it.  I can honestly tell you that I have never cashed any type of check that I did not expect or know anything about. To me, that is just standard procedure.

Because we seen conflicting post on here, we thought we would do some research on our end too.  We are a retailer and spoke to a customer on and off for over a week.  The customer said he was having a check sent to us through a processing company.  We received the check today.  The processing company is shown on the check as PAYMENT PROCESSING CENTER in Hickory, NC  (Then says NORTERN TRUST).  We did a reverse search on the 855-739-0856 number and found this site talking about the number and seen some people mentioned they answered the phone mentioning Bank Of America.
When we called, the woman simply said "Merchant Services".  The customer who sent the check is in RI.  So we took a chance and simply looked up Bank of America in the City,State of the customer that initiated the check.  By doing a search for Bank of America, we at least knew that we would get a legit connection to someone and believe it or not, they must get a lot of those calls because the guy was pretty quick to state that Payment Processing Center processes many checks for them.  Our suggestion is that if you get a check from anyone, be sure to look up whatever bank of ameria is in their city/state and start there to try and figure it out.  In about a month, we will update our findings to 100% everything was legit.  We have had checks like this in the past too.  Just that this world is so messed up with scams that it is getting harder and harder to believe things.  We will let you guys know in future if we find anything else and hopefully this is helpful because some of the post in here really made us scratch our heads on what the truth was.  We even called the BBB and they said there was no warnings on the processing company that they could see.

This is a scam.

I unexpectedly received a check for a few hundred dollars which with a return address of PO Box 1029, Hickory, NC. I called the number and someone introduced herself as being from Bank of America, even though this is not a BOA phone number and BOA doesn't have offices in Hickory. She asked for the check number, then told me the check is from me and to me, possibly as an account transfer error. Then she asked for my checking account number.

Totally bogus.

The check you get in the mail is a reverse bill payment...look at the checking account number on the bottom of the check?
It's yours!!!!!

When you deposit the check you authorize payment of the bill....Look at the "Pay To the Order Of" !!!

Very clever!

This is a legitimate # representing Bank of America online bill pay.  A check sent to me by my daughter was sent to me and never received.  They called with a case # had all my information and my Daughter's name and just needed to verify it to me to make sure it was a legitimate complaint.  They cancelled the one check with all the #'s and are reissuing a new check to me.

My employer uses this company to pay me every week. The checks are legit and the phone number is on the checks. I haven't had any issues with them.

They didn't call me  - it was the number that was on the supposed "check'.
It's collection agency called "Margin Support" at least that's how they answered the phone. It's definitely a scam - you try to cash the check and then they will probably try to garnishee whatever account the check was deposited to.

I happen to have a check from a client that comes from a company called Payment Processing Center in Hickory N.C.
They issue checks, a bill pay of sorts.  They are probably confirming that the "pay to" is genuine and not a scam.
Anyway, there phone number is on the check, and I have received several of these from my clients.
All legit
Hope this helps

My client received a call from 1-855-739-0856. Caller claimed to be from Bank of America investigating a case. My client is an elderly lady who has no accounts with Bank of America. I cannot yet confirm if this call is legit, scam, or simple error. I am pressing forward w/ my investigation.
