I've received so far two such calls from FDR on behalf of CIBC asking to me to call them back. Since I've never had any account or credit card with this bank, I hung up before I could hear the number they wanted me to call, and then started researching them on the Net, until I found this site. Now that I know it is a scam, I'll make sure to hang up every time I hear the word FDR.

You people need to stop answering phone numbers you dont' know - when it rings and I dont know the # I push my cell button twice and it disconnects - let them leave a message - but dont call them back - they are scammers - they buy any and all unpaid pay day loans and debt and try to make people pay but they do not have the authority.  If you owe a legitamite balance to someone - you will receive paperwork in your mailbox - if you do not it is a scam - dont' fall for this - if they can get you for the first few moments they know that you are scared and will give them info and money. DONT DO IT..........Take control and ignore them - trust me!!!! they can not hurt you - when you ignore them altogether they move on to someone else - yes they may come back in a few months but just keep ignoring them.

Just got a call from 1-855-771-6017 on my cell. They have called many times before but missed the call. Claiming something about CIBC and FDR. to call them back.  I don't bank with CIBC and unless an actual person calls me they won't get a return call from me.  This to me is a scam.

Yes tell them u r recordimg them and ask them there full name and get them to spell it for you.  After that they will finally speak to you like a human being once they discover that u are recording them.  They are bottom feeders that can't can't get a job anywhere else.  They harass you daily sometimes calling 10x a day.  They don't follow the rules as far as collecting a debt.  There main objective is to get the money as far and as ignorant as possible they gotta get the bonus of you

They seem to have acquired a number from a defunct business who still has a real, but not maintained, website. Or, they've illegally set up a fake website to hide their true identity when people google the incoming number. Regardless, they're also calling from 1-877-533-3546. Comes up as "Orange County Search Engine Academy". Scum.

This caller claims that they are calling on behalf of CIBC.  They also use the number 855-771-6018.   They are very demanding and expects that you call them back.  Since I have never had any business with CIBC, I have never call them back or bother to answer their calls.   I think they are looking for people who owe CIBC money but FDR is blanket calling everyone with the same surname.   It is a form of harassment.  I was tempted to complain to CRTC as my number is on the DO NOT CALL LIST but the complaint registry site states that your number and personal information could be release to the caller.  Why in the world would I want that?  Therefore, I did not file a complaint.  I think the DO NOT CALL LIST is a joke as it does not protect us.  Also, I did a count of my phone calls for a week.  Out of 42 calls that came in, only 6 were from my friends.  All others were spams, advertising, scams etc...  The telephone companies are having a grand old time, making us pay for our phones and providing our numbers to all the scammers and advertisers.   I think we need to change our phone company and demand that they do not list our private numbers for the public to see.  The times have changed since the Fifties.  The telephone companies are a big part of the problem.   They are making us pay for these harassing calls.  If enough people complain to their phone companies and Members of Parliament, maybe we will see more changes in the privacy laws.  We certain need it as it is getting worse in harassments through the telephone.

After doing some investigation it appears that FDR (Financial Debt Recovery 40 West Wilmot Street Richmond Hill, Ontario   L4B 1H8 Tel.: (905) 771-6000) is a debt collection agency that practices fraudulent redating of expired debts. Making it appear that people have made payments AFTER the expiry date of the loan. In the case of getting calls relating to CIBC these are student loan debts that expired decades ago that apparently the Canadian Government is trying to fraudulently collect. CIBC would have been reimbursed the money from the student loan after 6 years of default if the money had not been collected or no payments had been made. After 6 years according to the Canada Student Financial assistant  Act section 16.1 and 16.2, no action or proceedings shall take place to recover money owing under a student loan more than six years after the day on which the  money becomes due and payable. Another example of FDR doing this is: http://www.canadian-money-advisor.ca/threadview/4496.html  UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAKE ANY PAYMENTS TO THESE PEOPLE OR YOU WILL REACTIVATE THE LOAN. Ask for written materials indicated debts and take them to a lawyer. Complain to your Member of Parliament if they aren't Conservatives. Student loan debt is not forever in Canada like the United States and perhaps the Harper government is unaware of this being mostly ex-patriots from the Texas oil patch.

Finally a fresh creative new scam from our friends at Scammer's Anonymous. The same old scams year after year were really boring me to death. This one apparently fools a lot of people who have or have had accounts with CIBC. I once did about.... a quarter century ago. I owe them nothing, if I did they've had 25 years to collect it. I'm not hiding. It seems to be primarily a telephone scam getting people to call the number back and they make money keeping you on the line. I can find no web page for Federal Debt Recovery. It is obviously a bogus company, but if they can get you to send them a cheque due to being afraid of a bad credit report well that's a bonus isn't it. Report them to CIBC with the number they are using as well as the police fraud squad, and record any conversations you may have with them. THIS IS A SCAM FOLKS!

I don't answer calls from unknown numbers so this one left a voicemail. The message was left for a person named Jeff with the same last name as mine. I don't have relatives with this name and don't even know of one. He said that he was calling on behalf of CIBC. I've had this phone number for almost 20 years and have never had a CIBC credit card. He was "fishing" or "phishing". I suspect that every home phone number for families in this area with the same last name received a call from Shawn at FDR today.

Got calls repeatedly from 1-855-771-6017.  Give me a reference number.  Claim they're debt recovery for CIBC.  I Called back couple of times.  Got a busy tone.  Finally got through to see what this was about(I have no accounts/credit cards with CIBC - Never have).  Talk to "Sheikh", needs to verify my information starting with my name.  Since they already have my name I give it again.  Next he wants to know my Birthday/year this is where I hung up. PHISHING SCAM!!  He called back twice immediately after.  I've emailed the fraud department from CIBC to see where this leads.  Do Not Give out any information to these people.

My husband received a call on his cell phone today from this number.   I don't know what they want but we had sent a registered letter indicating that there were to be no phone calls to our home or to my husband's cell - that any communication  from them was to be by letter  (something  that perhaps some of you didn't know you could do).

Other advice - hang up and do not acknowledge anything.

They called my house at seven am. I called them back and told them that it is against the law for them to call me that early. They cannot call before 9 apparently. I also told them that Consumer law says that if you tell them to not call you anymore, they can only contact you in writing, that is what they have to do.  I told him that and he proceeded to say "call me back when you have a better attitude" and hung up on me..I did get it in and I hope for their sakes they do not do it again.
