You don't have to had taken out a loan to be targeted by these criminals. NOBODY'S personal identifying information is safe online anymore:

This is a criminal extortion scam operating out of India. They are making the calls utilizing VOIP and the names of legitimate firms to make it appear the calls are originating from within the US. There is NO "company" or "debt" and you will NOT be arrested. They are harvesting and/or buying consumers' personal identifying information from unscrupulous websites like the one you may have filled out an application with, and you need to do whatever you can to protect yourself. This includes: Notifying the FTC: https://www.ftccomplaintassistant.gov/, placing fraud alerts with all three credit bureaus, notifying your bank and employer and letting these criminals know you are aware they are attempting to extort money for a non-existent debt and have alerted the authorities.

ABC News released an investigative report on this scam in June. The FTC has indicted one of its ringleaders for criminal fraud:

I started recieving the calls yesterday! The first thing I did was panickaed & cried. So I googled the # & it came back as scam. So the next 20 times I was ready for war. He said his name was ALEX TURNER, BEN JONES & BEN JOHNSON! My boss called back because yes they calledd my job several timees, but myboss acted as my attorney that they demanded call them. So they told het " if your a lawyer u must have a barcode and they hung up on her. Im expecting more calls today since they only started yesterday but I will be reporting this mess. Its unfair & ridculous especially if I NEVER TOOK OUT A LOAN

Over a week ago I got a phone call from a Steven Clark at 855-846-4570 and he said some complaints were being filed against me. Since I couldn't talk at the time I was told to call back at that number and speak to Raymond Scott. One of the first thing I noticed was that everyone in the "legal department" spoke with very thick Indian accents. I was then told I was having a lawsuit filed against me and criminal charges of check fraud also filed because of an unpaid payday loan. The whole matter would be dropped if I paid over $1,000 to them. Obviously, this is very scary the first time hearing it.

Over a week later I get a message from 440-399-2139 with generally, the same type of message. This one I did not respond to, and it's fortunate I can't make a direct long distance call from my workplace. It enabled me to do a search of these numbers and found they were all scams operating out of India. There's not much by way of legal recourse, as it is occurring outside of this country, but it is important to check on these numbers so they can't bully you in their extortion schemes. In addition to everyone speaking with thick Indian accents, the other red flags include speaking to others in a rude and unprofessional manner, getting the names wrong, and divulging to others that this type of legal action is being taken against someone.

Some other action to take include reporting the matter to the Federal Trade Commission and the Attorney General's Office. It would also be a good idea to report the matter to the credit reporting agncies as there is potential for identity theft involved.

I just received my first call from this number yesterday and the guy called himself "Ricky Smith"!  I cut him off immediately, telling him I knew it was a scam - I had already been scammed by 619-734-7434 out of California!  I politely asked him not to contact me anymore and hung up while he was still talking,  When I got home, he had left 6 (!!) messages on my machine!  I, too, told him if he called me back I would contact the FCC.  Hopefully, he got the hint and won't call back.

To those of you being harassed at work or who are having family members called, I truly feel for you. This kind of crap is unforgivable. You can only explain to the boss or family that this is pure fraud and that it has become rampant. Plead for their patience and understanding. These slime-balls can attack anyone at anytime. The inter-net is a blessing and a curse.
When that pompous piece of excrement calls you at home or work inform him/her that all yours calls are being logged and recorded. That you are well aware that they are frauds. They'll hang up, usually after a meaningless bout of bluster and b***s***. At work take the call if possible. Tell them that you are your own boss and that their competitors have already tried this scam on other employees and that "Agent" whatever can take his papers and go wipe himself with them. That his threats are nothing but smoke and that you would absolutely love to meet his people in court. Arrest?? Tell him to get a clue and come up with something more original than that.
For those of you more daring, play with the insignificant dolt. Tell him that you know exactly who he is and that you're going to report his wife and daughter for giving you that raging case of crabs. Tell him that even if they were only 500 rupees each, it wasn't worth it!  Or tell him that you know damn well that he's the one that gave his goat AIDS and that now that slutty critter is spreading it all over Mumbai.
Lastly, wish him "Good luck in his coming situation".

Your boss needs to understand that firing you will not stop the calls at work. The callers are organized crime in India.  Your boss may have more than one employee with this problem, they need to warn everyone that works there.  Do not put personal info online.  Anything that has been put online that can be changed should be changed.  You and your employer should inform anyone that calls that all calls are recorded, even if they aren't.

Make a police report; they can't do anything about it, but do it just so you have a record of this attempt to rob you and can use it to document  the calls later.   These are Indian criminals and what they are doing is a felony.    DO NOT SEND MONEY; if you give them anything, even to get them to just go away, they will keep calling for more.     If you have caller ID and recognize their call, don't answer.  If you do end up speaking with them again, tell them you know they are criminals operating out of India and will pay them nothing, ever, even if they call back a thousand times. Don't be intimidated.   They cannot have you arrested or sue you.    Unfortunately, our government has done little to stop this assault on the American people by foreign criminals; you have to rely on yourself.   The only practical way to get them to leave you alone is to convince them you will never pay them anything.

Change her phone number or have her phone taken out and give her a prepaid cell.  There is no way she should be subjected to this crap.
If MIL was getting this crap we would do that, husband has POA.  My mom has been burned once, twice shy.

It's not a company.  It's a gang of criminals.  They use different, fictitious company names.  If they told you a company name, call it that, but they'll change it when their employer rewrites their script.

There's nothing you can do now to stop the calls short of having your phone changed to an unlisted number. The money you sent them is gone (sorry to say). If you have not already contacted the police and FTC, you need to do so to report you have been scammed.

I cannot even believe this....(well actually I can). I decided to GOOGLE the phone number I have been receiving multiple calls from every single day. Thank goodness I found this web site, 800notes.com. I am thankful I am not alone to deal with this situation. I do not wish problems for any one person, I am just glad I found SOME answers as to who has been harassing me over the past month.

There has been multiple messages left on my voice mail from a man with very broken English. This man who refers to him self as "Ricky Smith" from an attorneys office calls using different phone numbers every time he calls, 855-846-4570 and 855-834-5326. This "special" individual tells me he is calling in regards to a delinquent payday loan. What the hell? I have never had a payday loan issued in my name. He states he will call my employer and discuss the situation with them. Ummmmmm...........really? I don't think so dumb a**!

After 15 calls from "Ricky Smith" in one day I decided to answer and find out what the phone calls were about. I could not even believe they had my social security number, my birth date.....EVERYTHING! HOW? WHERE? WHEN? WHY? After he gave me the whole spill about how I was going to jail and blah blah blah I asked for the address of this attorney's office so I could send a cease and desist letter. This legally stops the dumb a***s from contacting me by phone, mail, etc. He told me they were located in Florida, but refused to give me the address. So I told him I wanted him to send me proof of the debt. I have worked for an attorney who REALLY collects on delinquent accounts so I am pretty familiar with the procedures and the rules of the FAIR DEBT COLLECTION ACT. I asked him if he was familiar with the rules of collection. He refused to answer and then hung up. So I called back.....pissed as all hell wanting to reach through the phone and strangle the foreign dumb a**. I called back several times with no answer since they have caller id. So I changed phones. YEP you guessed it. They answered when I used a different phone.

I asked for a supervisor. The man who answered told me he was a supervisor. He wanted to know what the issue was and why I was calling again. I started asking questions about the name of the firm, etc., and he told me to *&^% off. He also told me not to call there again. I was shaking I was so mad. I could not believe these people are getting away with calling and harassing people. Then I found this web page. It all makes sense now.  I have saved every message that has been left on my voice mail. I also recorded the conversations that were had with these people. Proof....what more can you ask for? Now what? Where do I go from here? THESE PEOPLE NEED TO BE STOPPED....THEY HAVE GONE WAY TO FAR!

(855) 846-4570 this number is continually calling me reporting that I have "charges" being brought against me and my social security number.. I have no clue who this is and they are saying I need to pay money back to some loan company or something. I called back and told them they were being reported. The man "Raymond" and another man (who is the same guy) detective Alex turner kept asking me about payment and said they were from the "federal crime beareu" located in Florida. I called back and harassed a few times jut so they got a little taste of their own medicine. I'm not done either!

The caller said that I was going to be sued and arrested if I didn't act immediately on a payday loan that I owed. I have never used payday loans before so I knew something was fishy. Then I asked to get the business name and address and the caller started saying sexally agressive statements to me and I hung up. The caller called back and was yelling at me in very broken English that I should listen to him or he is going to come to my house. He had my husband's social security # and our house address. Very scary!!!! No one should have to put up with this BS.

This has to be a scam. They don't even speak English. Very threatening. We don't put people in jail for not paying their bills. There's no "debtor's prison". Law Enforcement Officers do not collect debts. Tell them you'll report them to the BBB and the FTC and the FBI. They threaten you; you threaten them. Don't send money and don't give them ANY information.
