Exciting day, Monday! Portfoolio Recovery experts called our home for the 445th time since their lawyer wrote us , more than 3 years ago, that they had "decided to cease collection efforts." Big words. Maybe the people who work there do not know what they mean.

In any case, you do not owe these bottom feeders a single penny. They paid for a print-out of written-off debts. The lawyer admitted the so-called debts cannot be verified. It may have been you, and then again, it may not have been you. In any case, the so-called debt is likely years past the statute of limitations in addition to being unverified. So, they paid for these print-outs, and that was their decision to make, but it is not your problem. Let them go pound sand.

Do not pick up the phone when they call. If you do, then do not speak with them, do not answer any questions, do not engage at all. Hang up. If their calls really need to stop, then send them a cease and desist letter, with return receipt requested.

Cate this isn't unique to PRA in regards to the USPS not deploying a single employee to stand around for hours for mailers/customers who have a large volume of signature mail.   For instance most large mailers have PO pickup, a PO box, or a mail room at their office.  A postal employee is not going to stand their waiting for 2,000 pieces of certified mail to be signed for every day on top of express, and registered mail.  In my example I will use the NRA  or Fannie Mae who both receive copious amounts of return receipt mail daily, Mondays are even worse .  But this is not some hush hush deal with these scum bags at PRA.
You are correct on the rest.  Any numbered signature required mail is called a accountable.  This mail is handled separately from normal first class non signature required mails.  Accountable mails is separated from other classes of mail from posting to delivery.
A numbered piece of mail is registered by all handling employees and can be tracked rather the green cards are returned or not.

Very true Golden Girl.  Best not to answer the phone at all.  One of their favorite tricks that works is acting like they can't pronounce a persons last name they are looking for, so they say it incorrectly .  Usually the person on the other end corrects them with the proper way to say the name and bingo!  They know they have the persons correct address or the person they are talking to knows who ever they are searching out to harass.  Say nothing don't answer best course of action.

Exactly Geoff.  Because someone has a old bank or retail credit card  information doesn't mean they own the debt.  It would be like me making a official document up on my home pc and sending it to you stating you owe me money because you have a VISA card  which I happened to find the basic acct information in the trash or online somewhere.  You don't owe me squat but maybe I can fool some saps into paying something?  Its a scam while what I point out would be illegal for me to do its somehow acceptable and sanctioned to allow this scam through lack of government intervention and kissing a** to lobbyist.
As well when you send for validation make sure that they explain the exact amount they claim you owe and how they calulated later charges and interest, not just the total amount but they must explain how the charges are calculated.  These guys are crooked as hell.  The people calling are helpless suckers that might be working at Wal-Mart or Burger King next month in their little cubicles.  The crooks are at the top.

They have tried over and over to collect debt that we paid off twice already and as far back as 2003.  I told them I had documentation and they gave me an e-mail address saying I could send it in and they would delete it from their files.  It was a FAKE e-mail address.  The e-mail address given did not exist.

They are NOT to be trusted!

Debt Collector
It is a debt collector who was trying to collect debt on what I can only assume as an old cable tv account for my ex wife.6+yrs ago. When I called them back after continous calls, I asked to be removed from their calling list. We will see what happens. I spoke to an AKA Kendra Hilton. In the middle of her yelling at me, I was able to obtain a physical address of the Corp. Office, I question the authenticity of it, but, she told me it was 140 Corporate Blvd. Northfolk, Va 23502.I traced the call using my *57 feature. When I tried to tell her that if she continued to call I would further address it, she said to quit threatening her. LOL. Their Co. is the one that should maybe try a better tactics and business practices than calling, yelling and hanging up on you. They might be a bit more productive and actually help people pay off and satisfy old debt. JACK A***S in my opinion!!

I have a roommate and when she is gone, I answer the phone for her. This guy calls. I answer and catch him having a conversation with someone next to him which is very unprofessional. He said this was an important business call and asked to speak to my roommate and was she available. I replied that she was not available and may I please give her a message. He replied no thank you and abruptly disconnected the call. Didn't wait to see if she would be home another time or if she was even at this number anymore. I have been a professional telemarketer doing professional business calls. Had I handled a call this way, I would have been fired!

Prank Call
It is true, as Concerned Citizen mentions, above, that PRA has an agreement with the postal service that they do not have to sign return receipts immediately. I heard this is due to the fact that PRA has, at certain times, received hundreds of such letters in a day. That was when the vermin were hot and heavy into sending out fraudulent 1099-C's to their victims. The postal people did not want to stand around waiting for somebody to sign all those letters, and it took extra long, since most of the people who work for Portfoolio cannot write their names, so Portfoolio  promised "on their honor" to sign the return receipts later and return the whole pack to the PO.

But since the bottom feeders at Portfoolio Recovery have no honor, quite often this signing never happens. My card was  not returned, but the upside is that the US Postal Service has a record of the delivery anyway, which you can request from a postal worker at the public stamp desk in the post office.

Portfolio Recovery ASSociates is sued all the time. Funny thing is they can't collect on debts that they purchase for pennies on the dollar so they resort to harassment and illegal tactics.  Contact your state's AG or an attorney of your own... send them an official Cease and Desist letter with signature confirmation (rumor has it they have a hush hush agreement with USPS to take the letters and "sign them later") so you really can't trust that either.   Portfolio Recovery A**-ociates has limitless numbers as they spoof their numbers to look like they are calling from your area code. For example, PRA calls me from a certain AC/Prefix, that is ONLY USED by Medical Facilities. They will get what's coming to them from a class action lawsuit of some kind.

This number calls all hours everyday over and over, they are relentless. I am typically not home when they call but happened to be here and answered the phone, this woman asked for my husband who was not home so I asked how I could help her when she promptly hung up on me! I called the number back spoke with a different lady, who actually helped me by just asking one simple question that I answered and of course they had the wrong person, I have now been (hopefully) removed from the list of people with the same name to harass. I swear debt collectors just call everyone with the same name until they get the right one.

You should say: this debt is not collectible. But the problem is that the consumer credit protection laws do not prevent these dirtbags from calling/harassing...etc.  it only prevents them from filing suit.  Their goal is to keep wearing people down until they give up and pay up.  They are not entitled to ONE RED CENT.

Caller ID: Portfolio Recovery Company  Kentucky Based Debt Collection Agency. If they are legitimate, the concern is there is no legitimate reason to call since there is no debt of any kind owed at all to anyone, at anytime.

Number block is your friend. On advice from my own attorney many years ago I do not speak to third party debt collectors. Period.

Still here years later, still working, living as normal, with clean conscience. I do my best to pay all that I owe to whom I owe it. End of story.

Good day.

They have been calling here and immediately hang up for the past 2 years.   I always call them back and do actually talk with a live person.   They are looking for a person by the name of Sabrina.   I have told them NUMEROUS times that there is no one by that name that works here.  This is a business.   They tell me they will remove our number from their list and will never call again.   Same thing happens the following month.   And AGAIN I tell them the same thing.   This is getting VERY old and needs to stop.

Whether or not its a land line or a cell line... Portfolio decides to harass you they are going to harass you. Its that simple. I get several calls a day. I know the person they want but dont have anything to do with this person anymore. However since I know them PRC has decided that they bill thats several years over the collection deadline is now mine to pay up. They think I will cough it up for someone that screwed me and so many others they are on the crack and they are stupid to boot.
