I believe this is fraud.
I just got a call as well, so it's obviously still going around. However, the caller ID said SEATTLE WA and had the number 206-832-1394. Now they are trying to use a new number, but they still had a recorded female's voice giving me a name that was NOT mine or anyone in my household, and told me to call back regarding an urgent message from Bank of America. The number they gave me was the 866-231-4406 number, and they gave me a file number as well.

I used to work for a bank, and I've also had someone attempt to use my card YEARS ago. When that happens, they put a hold on your account. When you can't use the card, and you call them using the number on the back of that card, they will tell you what happened. Banks have very sophisticated fraud and collections departments. If they need their money, they will get a hold of you some way, but they shouldn't leave an automated message for any reason, especially with someone else's name on an account.

My suggestion would be to either ignore and report, or call your bank directly using the customer service number on the back or at your nearest branch location.

I've received numerous phone calls and emails from people claiming to be BoA, Chase, Citi, etc. They use and email address that is NOT on my account, and I do not even have one of those accounts. If you're internet savvy enough to find this review, then you can go to the website of any bank in question and use the number found on their website to confirm that your identity has not been stolen.

Good luck!! As long as it keeps working for them, they will keep trying.

I got the call AND IT WAS LEGITIMATE.  Here's what I did.  I told the 866-231-4406 guy that I would not give out info.  He said fine and gave me the other number.  I did not call that number.  Instead I called the number on the back of my debit card and eventually talked to a human and it turned out the call was legit last night.  My dauhter's account was overdrawn and they wanted me to either close it or fund it with a deposit.

My suggestion:  Don't give out ANY INFO when someone calls you, instead get a phone number from a legitimate source such as the back of your credit or debit card or from your monthly bank statement or credit card statement.  Then call that number and ask "Are you people trying to get in touch with me?"

This google thing is great and if I had not read all of the posts here I would have just thought it was another one of these scammers that seem to call me almost every single day.  remember - never tell anybody anything unless you know for sure who you are talking to.

(SCAM) I just received a message to my cell.  I called BOA directly and they had nothing on file that they needed to speak with me about. When I gave them the number - they said it was NOT a BOA number.

I called the scam number-put my "file number" in.  Gave my name and to press 1 if it was me or 2 if it was not me.  I pressed 2. The recording apologized for the call.

A rep called and left a message to call BOA and enter code. I called and they used a married name that I have not used in 10 year. The rep ask for my birth date and ss#. I felt uncomfortable and told them that I wanted to go to the branch to handle what ever it is they are calling me about. The rep said you can go to your branch, but the branch will have to contact their department to get the information anyway. Call it intuition; I told the rep that I felt uncomfortable and want to verify that they are infact BOA. I googled the number and saw all the complaints. Some one should put these theives out of business.

I have spoken with Bank of America and THIS IS A SCAM.
They stated if Bank of America were to call you they would not ask for information such as your address and date of birth and there is NEVER a message code. When these scams are ran they start with smallest of information to get you comfortable because if they asked for your account number right off it would really seem suspicious... If you get these calls HANG UP and call 800 432 1000 that is the BOA number. And like someone else said BOA would never have techno music playing at a legitimate call center. People beware, these times are hard please hold on to your information, information is power.
866 512 7171 called but 866 231 4406 was the return number

I got the same call.  I called back Bank of America customer service number from their website and spoke to the fraud department.  They told me that the number is legitimate and it is in fact Bank of america.  Also told me that if I feel uncomfortable giving any personal information on the phone.  Just get the department the person is calling from and call back bank of america through the main telephone number on the website or debit card.  But the number 866-231-4406 and 866-512-7171 is legit people.

They've been calling my number for many months.  I never answer. They leave a message for someone I've never heard of.  If it were so important, by now they would have checked phone records and seen that they have a wrong number, or they would have sent a letter by now.  I have now blocked the number.  But I'm thinking about forwarding the calls to the FBI... if that's possible.

I just got a call on my cell phone from 866-512-7171. It was a recording saying they were from BofA and said "If this is Sally Lewis please press 1, if this number belongs to someone else, press 2." I pressed 2 and it said to hold while it connected me to a customer service representative. I hung up. I don't even bank with BofA nor do I ever put my cell number on anything. Definitely a scam!

Got a missed call from 866-512-7171.  A message was left stating to call 866-231-4406 and enter message code 955716.

They wanted to verify personal info prior to providing the nature of the call.  However, my sixth sense told me that this was a fraudulent call, which I indicated to the "representative". I did not provide him with any info, and hung up.

I then contacted Bank of America where the representative shared with me that there were no messages on my account and advised me to report the "fraudulent" phone call.

I got this call and was scared when they started asking for account information. I asked for the guy's name and hung up, then directly called the official BOA customer support line at 1.800.933.6262. They confirmed that a call had been made and that the teller noted I thought it was a fraudulent call. I asked the cust. service person if she knew the time of the call and the name of the caller. She knew the exact time the call had been made and told me the correct name of the caller without me mentioning his name. Clearly this is a legit call.

I asked the new cust. service guy what this automated call center was all about. He said that when an account is overdrawn for more than 20 days, a flag gets put on the account and it goes to this automated message center. He also said that it takes 3-5 business days to update the account before this call center is notified. In my case, I had already solved the issue by the time the automated phone call was made.

This is NOT a fraud call. My advice is to simply call BOA directly or walk into the bank and take care of your overdraft fees. It's good to be careful of who you give personal info to, but it's better to keep track of your money and resolve any overdraft issues immediately!

please trust me, this is not a scam!  All it is is BofA calling you if you are around 23 days overdrawn and under $300.  The reason for the call is to inform you that you are overdrawn and to make sure that you understand what has occurred and if you are around 90-119 days overdrawn they may do something to help keep your account from closing.  Once it closes you will be sent to check systems for 5 years, which is horrible cause you can't open an account  with any other Fed. instituion!  If you feel unsure you can call customer service # on the back of your card.  They can list their phone # and name under contact history on your account that way the customer service rep can verify that it is an associate of the bank that is calling you.  BofA associates do not have id#'s to give you but they can give their unit number 1580!  The unit number lets other reps know what city and state they are in!  Even though you take the call, it keeps calling until your account is not longer overdrawn for a full day!

A prerecorded message was left by "Bank of America" stating call 8662314406 and enter a code to retrieve a message.  I called the actual BoA number and checked the status of my account.  I was currently overdrawn, but had no notes or issues with "My account in danger of being closed or collections actions"  ...or anything.  The rep. at BoA even said it was a phishing message (attempt to scam).

Bottom Line:  Believe whoever you want, just call the official BoA number first.  That number is the only one you can really believe...or just go to your local branch...

I called back after reading this and refused to give them any information.  I asked what the call was about and they said that there may be suspicious activity on the account.  I told them I was not interested in answering any questions about the account, but if they could give me the last four of the account in question, I would check it out.  They gave me the correct number.  When I asked what number to call back if I found something suspicious, they said just to call the number on the back of my card to get a claim started.  If you are receiving a call from this number, just call the number on the back of your card instead but it seems legit.

[Also post this on the other number's message board thread.]

It's a valid Bank of America telephone number.

Low Overdraft Services (866.512.7171)
[Or it may show up as 866.231.4406 on caller IDs and call history.]
A Bank of America department that was created in early 2007 to contact customers with accounts (regardless of account status) that have been overdrawn for over 20 days consecutively for under $300.

We call to make sure you are aware of the account being overdrawn, to make sure it isn't fraudulent transactions that caused the account to be overdrawn, verify you still have your debit card in your possession, to see when you will be able to make your next deposit, offer services to prevent overdrafts in the future, note your account, and to see if there's anything we may do to assist with the amount due and retain your business.

A dialer system calls with an automated message and states it's a non-marketing call with an urgent message regarding your account information and provides a message code. That code expires with a couple days, which is why a representative would ask your for your number to look it up on the call list.

If you connect to a representative, they will only ask you the standard security questions to access your account, the same questions that are asked when you call Bank of America customer service (800.432.1000).
Those questions may include:
-Mother's maiden name
-Verbal password
-Three digit code
-Driver's license or State ID number
-City and state / banking center where your account was opened
-Address and date of birth
-Number and type of accounts
-Number or type of accounts linked to your card
-Amount and location of last ATM transaction
-Amount and payee on recent cleared check
-Joint owners date of birth
-Joint owners mothers maiden name

We ask these questions because we need to make sure the people who answered the phone of the number we called is our customer. We cannot legally give out personal and account information without making sure we are speaking to the account holder, as I'm sure you would not want your private account details given out to just anyone who answers the line.

Two reason why we may call you when you don't have an account are:
-We may have an old phone number for a customer
-We may have entered a customer's phone number incorrectly into our system records (the customer we're trying to reach may have a number only a digit or so off from yours)
-A customer may have given us a wrong number

If we're calling a wrong number, we'll gladly remove the number within a couple business days if you report it.

As always, if you feel uncomfortable providing the answers to the questions we ask, please visit your local banking center or call the number on the back of your card.

And the reason why a Bank of America employee would search the number on the internet and contribute to message boards, such as this one, is because we find humor in the number of people who think we're fraud when we're only calling to help. Members of our department also mentioned that our number was being posted on these sites and claimed as a scam, so we wanted to have a look for ourselves to see just exactly what people were saying.
