I received a call this morning from 866-236-2295, which is the HSBC Fraud Prevention Unit. I had set up a new payee on my online bill pay account and sent larger than usual payment to that payee. The Fraud Prevention Unit wanted to confirm that it was actually me that set up the payee and sent the payment, to be sure my account had not been comprimised. The number is legit.

got 2 messages on the answering machine from "hsbc" fraud prevention asking me to call them back at this number. i thought it was bogus so i called the number on the back of my atm card and reported it. the next day, i had an email with my full name spelled out asking me to call the same number, so i again called the number on the back of my atm card. i eventually spoke to someone in the fraud prevention department that confirmed there was a hold on my internet banking account due to suspicious activity (i logged in from my work and home computers in the same day, which must have thrown a flag).

tldr; there's a good chance this is legit, but take care of it by calling the number on the back of your atm card to be sure.

got a message from fraud prevention asking me to call back at 866-236-2295.  The guy ask me for the last 4 of my SSN, and asked me a question about bill payment that I made from my account.  that's is.from the information he had about the payment (just the name of the company that I did make a payment to).  the call seemed legit.

The number 866-236-2295 is a legit number.  I called the HSBC number 1.800.975.4722 found in HSBC website. The customer service re-routed my call to Fraud department. The fraud department confirmed the number 866-236-2295 is legit. Just to be safe, you should call HSBC customer service first and have them transfer you to fraud department. It is still worth it even though I was on hold for 10 minutes due to high volumn. (I think HSBC cut down on personnel manning the customer service.)  Although I am legit, anyone could have posted this type of response as legit if the number was in fact not legit. Be safe and call customer service first.
