These people are pure jerks!!!
I keep telling them to sue me and they won't.  I know what I owe and why i owe it.  The one they call me about is a false debt.  When I answer, they first tell me the company name, then tell me "this is a call from a debt collector and this call may be monitored and recorded",  at which time I turn on my recorder (advised by my attorney to record all calls) and tell them "your call will be also".  They immediately tell me I don't have permission to record them, and I come back with..I don't remember giving you permission to record me either.  My final words "guess we don't have anything to say to each other and hang up!  I do it every time they call..and they just keep calling..why?  I'm not real sure..they must not have a clue what a recording system is!!  Or maybe they really need to have a class to see what recording their conversations means.  Or maybe they need to hire people on a higher level who understands the concept.  I guess what I am saying is, that company is about as stupid as the callers for paying someone to call everyday when it is a dead end and use company time.  1 more month and it will be illegal because the statue will run out.  I dare them to call me after that...yea me!!

For over two years the original creditor (GECapital) for Care Credit tried to get their money --- I had medical bills piled up and did not pay GEC. It went to collections. Portfolio (they are a group of attorneys) sent several letters; called me and left many messages; always saying the call was an effort to collect a debt and to go to a private place to listen to the call. They were not rude. I was finally sued for the money I owed just before Christmas.... I called them in January and spoke to Gary Windham a and they allowed me to make 12 payments as they attempted to get me to do back in October. So I set up 12 payments - they asked what day each month I wanted the $$ withdrawn from checking and I gave them a date. The guy gave me his ID number and phone to call if I run into problem with the funds not being in the account prior to the agreed date to withdraw. He was professional and even appologized to me that I was ill.  He had asked why I fell behind in my payment and I told him why. I owe the money --- I borrowed it when I needed it most and so I owe it back. I did not want to go to court paying in payments is great for me. It beats standing in front of a judge! The debt is mine---- I need to pay it back. Don't be afraid to call them.

I have been getting calls for my father, same name, at times we had the same address.  He has since passed away.  Portfolio has 4 accounts for him.  They sued me twice (I am thinking they think I am him, but they never give any paperwork to verify anything).  I counter-sued.  Demanded discovery.  They asked to settle by mutual dismissals.  We did a global settlement agreement and dismissal.  They still call.  So far credit bureaus have not been cleared per settlement agreement.  They get one more letter to fix it then I sue them again for each contact after the settlement and for breaching the settlement agreement.

If they call be sure to write them to stop contacting you.  If they sue be sure to answer and file a counter suit at the same time.  If you don't know how to do it talk to an attorney or at least get a book from Barnes and Noble or your library and follow the instructions.  They count on default judgments.  Don't let them get it.

This is a reply for all people that say they have been harassed in any way shape or form by Portfolio Recovery.  There are strict guidelines and laws set up by the Federal Government and EVERY third party collection agency is required to abide by.  These laws are the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act commonly referred to as the FDCPA.  It is the job of the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to ensure that every collection agency is abiding by these laws.  I would highly recommend that anyone that feels they are being harassed in any way shape or form should contact the FTC to make a report.  As for calling you at work...Well by law you only have to verbally tell a debt collector not to call you at work and by law they cannot.  There are attorneys out there that will gladly file a FDCPA violation lawsuit on your behalf.  Just google search it.  Hopefully enough complaints and FDCPA violation lawsuits will put these people out if business.

Get a very loud  whistle and keep it with you at all times. When you see their number on caller ID pick up the phone up  and blow the whistle. I bought an air horn. They hire all morons. I picked up the phone and told a moron  to hold on a minute then I put down the phone and blasted very loud rap music for three minites before the moron  hung up the phone. Tell them nothing. They are lookig for anyone they can scam.
Do not pick up any calls from them without a whistle.

Your best bet is not to answer your phone. I answered the phone today and I was disappointed because I wanted to try out my new air horn but they hung up the phone before I could blast then with my airhorn. I use ear plugs when using it. Keep in mind they are not calling you because they think you owe money. They are calling to get some poor soul to send them free money and they are not interested in anything else. Also buy your selgf a good loud whistle if you can't find an air horn. Also be aware these dirt bags troll these sites so if any poster insults you for posting about these scam artists that should be your first clue that they work for these con artists who try to squeeze money out of people who don't owe money.

DO NOT TALK TO THESE SCAM ARTISTS: IF YOU ANSWER THE PHONE HANG UP. IF YOU HAVE CALLER ID DON'T ANSWER THE PHONE FROM THOSE NUMBERS: OR IF YOU MUST ANSWER THE PHONE TELL THEM TO HOLD ON A MINUTE AND LEAVE YOUR PHONE ON AND SEE HOW LONG THEY WILL HOLD ON UNTIL THEY HANG UP. YOU CAN ALSO PLAY MUSIC FOR THEIR LISTENING PLEASURE. THE LOUDER THE BETTER:  THEY FIGURE IF YOU TALK TO THEM YOU ARE AN EASY MARK FOR A SCAM: DON'T FORGET THE REASON THEY HAVE TIME TO TALK TO YOU IS BECAUSE TENS OF THOUSAANDS OF PEOPLE DON'T PICK UP THE PHONE FOR THESE SCAM ARTISTS: THEY DO NOT CARE IF YOU OWE ANY MONEY OR NOT ONCE YOU START TALKING TO THEM THEY FIGURE YOU ARE AN EASY MARK FOR A SCAM:

You need to save that message and contact the attorney general in your state and file a complaint. You also may want to contact the police to file a harassment charge against the company too. I had something similar happen to me only the person who called me was impersonating an officer of the courts for a supposed bad check I had supposedly written. Once I filed the complaint, I got a letter stating the debt was cleared and they never called again!!

Got a call from this number this morning at 8:40 am. Caller ID says toll free call.  Glad I read
the other complaints.  Didn't know this was Portfolio Recovery whom I've gotten calls from before. The last call was on April 4. Caller ID showed Portfolio Recovery,  412-235-6111. No message was left either time and I know I've gotten calls many times from them before. I don't answer calls from names and numbers I don't know nor call them back.

First..know if you owe a debt, thats ok, its not the end of the world, tho it feels that way.
BUT, you do not need to be treated in a low, degraded way. Do not let any debt collecter
tell you what to do with YOUR money. You control your money. And dont let your money
contol you, YOU contol your money.
www.daveramsey.com
Pay your debts off YOUR way..not their way, you can do it.
If a debt collection agency is using fowl language and threats they need to be reported
to FTC.gov
I know..I speak from expeirence...done it all, calls, letters and summons to court. I am still digging
out but its on MY terms, not theirs. I demand respect..if I dont get it, I report.

best advice: if they call, change your number. second step: if they send you a letter, contact 8 8 8 2 0 1 1 0 1 2, its a free legal advice for usa, also forms to fill out will be on website w w w . washington help . org (no spaces of course) I am still dealing with these people, they show no proof of you owing debt other then a balance they supposedly received from a company you owe money to. all they have is your previous address, name, number, and a balance they received. don't give them any information. don't pick up the phone. don't worry yourself about it. just do as the lawyer says and print out forms off the address given. Don't forget to change your number! I know its a hassle, but they wont be calling you anymore. plus add your number to the do not call registry list, make sure you get the confirmation too. NOTE: if they file through the court... i.e. paperwork sent to you...  stop direct deposit to your bank immediately... they could freeze bank accounts. keep less then 30$ in them, unless to make a bill payment that day with debit card. it's a wait game on their part after you file the paperwork through the court. it could take months or a year or two... but in the end, you are the wiser cause they dont do their paperwork, which will work out in your favor if you act quickly.

I have some student loan debt that I'm about to start paying off, but I'm WELL within in the grace period of the first few payments and I've been working with Nelnet (the folks who own the debt) on getting this process started. Otherwise I'm debt free.

I just got a call from the number in question on a cell number I've had for less than a week. They left no message and it didnt ring for long enough for me to answer it.

This was all good info to have, and I now have them forwarded directly to voicemail when they call. If they leave a message I might find out if its a legitimate debt, which I doubt it is, or at least be able to nail them in a lie.
Thanks everyone who had something useful to say, and I hope you all have a life less filled with scum bags like this!

This is Portfolio Recovery.  Big Rip Off collections company.
They buy old, OLD debts from multiple sources.  They then try to collect on these debts, whether beyond statute of limitations, written off by the original creditor, or whatever. Many times they target people with the same last name, even if not living in the town, or have the first name of the debtor.  I have a very common last name- so there's a darn good chance I'm not even the person who had the original debt- 10, 15 yrs ago.

Yesterday, I found out they placed a

LEVY AGAINST A SAVINGS ACCOUNT OF MINE THAT I JUST OPENED UP SEVERAL WEEKS AGO!

Luckily, I had transferred a few hundred dollars back into my regular checking account 2 days prior, (for xmas shopping), so they only got $20.
BUT my bank charged me a $100 "levy fee"  so now my savings is "overdrawn".
The bank has promised to waive that fee for me, but still.... what BS!

I have no clue for whom, or how much these low-lifes are trying to collect.
Watch your bank accounts closely!!

They are calling my # about the same time every day, and I don't pick up. I don't have any debt for them to collect, so I have no idea how they got my #. I have had this # for over 10 years. They leave no messages.
It just shows up as a "missed call". I assume its this debt collecting company from all the comments I have read.

I received a letter from these people stating that I have a debt, which i do know of, and that legal action could be taken against me. My account has been bought by so many different companies like this one and none of them ever bothered with legal action. I would like to pay it off but I have told all the other collectors "you can't get blood from a stone". And that has not changed unforunately. So now they are calling me. I'm not going to pick up numb-nuts if its not important enough for you to leave a message! LOL!
