I received a similar phone mail from a woman claiming to be HSBC on 2/7/08.  When I returned the call, the same Indian-sounding woman answered and identified herself as HSBC security.  She asked me for a reference number.  I gave her the number she left on my answering machine, but she said that it was not sufficient.  She then asked for my ATM card number and various questions like what accounts I have with HSBC.  I gave her no info and asked her why she had called in the first place.  She said that she could not tell me unless I confirmed that personal info she was asking for.  I hung up and immediately called HSBC customer service.  They were able to confirm that HSBC security had called me regarding questions on two transactions that had taken place, but could not confirm the 866 number.  I am baffled by who this woman is.  If she was actually HSBC security then she needs to go through some type of training to not sound like a phishing scammer.

It is an HSBC number, although it doesn't seem like it. I received a call from fraud prevention up in Buffalo and they left that toll free number for me to call back. I called HSBC to see if it realy was them and they verified and put me on the phone with the same person that had left the message. I had a man call but the number was the same.

If you don't feel comfortable, you can always call in and deal with it that way.

7/31/09- Some india accent lady left a message on my phone saying she's from HSBC fraud and even left a reference numberto call immediately. I tried calling the said # 866 499 9653, but it's a none working number. Can HSBC work on this issue? These people should used a valid working number and when I call HSBC main #,they should know what the reference number is for.

The same thing happened to me tonight.  I am going to complian and say that something valid should come up on my caller ID.  I still a bit nervous about the whole thing.  The transaction they declined was almost $1,000, which I am grateful for.  I have been HSBC since it took over from Marine Midland back in the 80's, and lately I am very disappointed with the services I have received. Mind you I pay to HSBC 2 mortgages, 1 Home Equity Loan all on time, and have 2 checking accounts and a savings account.  You would think I would get a little courtesy.
