Debt Collector
All of a sudden last May I received dozens of calls from this number. They came to all 3 phone numbers I deal with, which was suspicious as I use them for completely separate things. It was an automated voice saying this call was for... <insert name here> and I or my counsel should call by the end of the day. I ignored them for a while and then decided to google the number. It seemed that it was a bogus credit collection scam.  I decided to get a credit report from Equifax just in case they were trying to mess with my credit rating.

Turns out that "National Credit Recovery" and "Wonga" had both made credit requests on my account and that is how they got all the phone numbers I've had in the last 5 years.  Since my credit is totally clean, I have now Blocked these calls.

Here is the info I got on NCR:  Collection Agency registered with the Ontario Ministry of Consumer Services, File #4715250.  Their address: 6285 NORTHAM DRIVE FLOOR 4TH, MISSISSAUGA, ON L4V 1X5.  Telephone number:  905-366-0206.

Re: WONGA. They are supposed to be a quick-cash-loan operation from the UK. Here is what the news says about them. "The company is beset by controversy. It?s been accused by politicians, media and even the Church of England of preying on some of that country?s most financially vulnerable citizens through short-term, high-interest loans."

So what right does Wonga have to tap my credit report? This inappropriate and a total invasion of my privacy.  I will be pursuing this with the Ombudsman and consumer protection agencies.

Just moved as well. Changed my address, same story as everyone.

After reading everything over the last 4+ years Ive come to the conclusion that it can't be a scam if its been running this long with no shutdown.  That said I will not call back on the principle alone that a company as large as BoA uses such a sketchy third party firm that leaves even sketchier voicemails to check for fraud.  Apparently BoA is aware of the issue as you notice slight changes in the firm's 'reviews' over the years.

Still on behalf of myself and every other person thats gotten paranoid over the past 5 years, DONT call back. Even if its really BoA, apparently this system doesn't work for its consumers. Ignoring them is the only way to force BoA to actually change. This is not the way to treat your customer's financial security.

Got the same message left on my machine!  After calling them back and getting nowhere when I refused to give them my card number, I contacted the Fraud Dept through the telephone number on my B of A card. They told me that they DO use other agencies to check recent inquiries, etc.  That was right after the Cust Serv rep told me the Fraud Dept was IN-HOUSE!  Two different answers!  I'm going to cancel this account!  I SURRENDER!

I received a call from that number today. Caller ID was "Unknown", which I doubt BofA itself would have. So I found this website. I called the back of my card Customer Service number and they said that that there were no changes whatsoever to my account and that furthermore, that phone number does not exist at BofA. They even explained to me that it was a scam to get my information.

I suspect that there is no massive "information leak" involved, but they are random calls. There are so many BofA customers that a high percentage of the people will have an account at BofA. That would explain the calls to non-BofA customers. I am at a loss to explain the postings that say that the calls are legit. Perhaps they got a BofA rep that was guessing that the bank made such calls or didn't understand the question. Most banks do send emails when account info is changed, so perhaps that's what they thought the caller meant. Or perhaps the scammers are posting here.

I suspect that the scam is pretty successful, as if people have a BofA account and call back, they would be expected to provide their account number and perhaps additional info. That's what happens when you call a real Customer Service number. The scam has been going on for a long time and apparently real people answer the calls, so if must be pretty profitable.

I SPOKE to BoA on the phone to change my address. I called the number on my card. The next day I received a call from this number 866 518 1695.  No message, so i googled it and found this page.  I don't think it is a scam, however just don't be stupid and give your card # or ss# when called by anyone.  Just call the number on your card if you are worried.

I received a call from 1-866-518-1695. It was cut off and I could only make out "call back if this was message was in error." After googling the number and seeing that it is likely a phishing scam, I will not be calling back.

I just spoke to Cardholder Services via the number printed on the back of my Bank of America Visa credit card. They representative at the direct number confirmed that the call I recieved was legitimate, and it's a routine call to ensure that I did update my address. It is not a scam or a fraud. It might be a third party call center, though, because they didn't identify themselves as Bank of America.

Regardless, The call is legitimate as verified by Bank of America cardholder services' verified 800 number.

Just spoke to Bank of America through the number on the back of my card. They verified that this number is legitimate. The call was to veryify my change of address, and it's not a fraud or security leak of any kind.

I got a call from this number, and I returned their call. It seemed sketchy at first, they asked for my card number and I refused. They looked up my account by the phone number I called on and stated it was about my "bank of america visa ending in ####" and they wanted to check a couple transactions to ensure that they are legitimate. They asked my Date of Birth, and I told them I was uncomfortable since it was an unsolicited call from an unknown number. They said that was alright, and I could just call the phone number on the back of my card. If you get a call from this number and it doesn't sit right, just call your cardholder customer service with your bank directly.  I do not think this is a scam, because when I called the bank directly they seemed to know what it was about.

This is kind of scary, because I did recently change my address on a BoA account as well as other places. Does BoA have a security leak where they are letting people know that you've changed the personal information on your account? Why hasn't this # been shut down yet if it's been going on since 2009?

I received a hang up call from this number. I first checked this site and, notwithstanding the numerous reports here that the number was fraudulent, decided to make a call. The person who promptly answered identified the firm as FIA Card Services. She asked for my credit card number and I asked her which card. She told me that they work for several credit card companies and then asked for my phone number that had been called. I gave it to her and she correctly identified my BofA card as one for which I made a change of address a day earlier. She correctly identified the type of BofA credit card (Gold Reserve). She verified my driver license number and my spouse's middle name. She did not ask for my mother's maiden name, my credit card #, or my CVC # on the back. She did verify the new address and added an "in care of" line which I had been unable to do online. FIA was formerly known as MBNA Corp., a major credit card issuer, and changed it's name to FIA in 2006. Later that year, it was acquired by BofA. Got a call today on my mobile # from 866-518-1695 and from 866-844-9419.... neither caller left a message

Seems like this has to do with BoA... I have bank accts, credit cards and  Merrill Lynch accts... as rule, I only work thru my investment advisor team @ ML - they deal with the BoA org on my behalf

Calls could be legit, but as a rule, trust no one and never give out any sensitive data...

Also, I do know that whenever I call ML, my calls are monitored as evidenced by both the disclosure statement and the the periodic"beeps" that continue through out the call duration

I had a message left on the phone number I used in a recent change of mailing address that BoA was calling to confirm changes made recently.  I called back and realized the hold music and automated attendant were NOT Bank of America.  I hung up and would advise everyone else to do the same.

Do not call, it is obvious fraud. The message stated some activity with you BofA accounts, call us if you did not change anything. I called and stupidly gave my ss#, and the person stated you have no accounts with us - they are not Bof A bank just wanted my personal info.

Thanks for the detailed analysis.  I received the call from 302-731-1166 -- left a voice mail which only provides a toll free number of 866-518-1695.  I called that number and there's an immediate recording without any further identification of whom you're calling, that states the call may be recorded.  Then you wait for an individual to answer.  The individual will answer with "Credit Card Services", so they are getting somewhat smarter in trying to ensure the fraud appears as legitimate as they are able to make it.

I made changes to my BofA credit cards yesterday, however it was not an address change. This morning I got a call from 302-731-1166, didn't answer and told me to call back the number 1-866-518-1695. I got put on hold for a couple minutes, then a lady answers. I asked what company this was and she just said "Card Services".  She said the reason I got this call was because there were changes made to my credit account. Which was true, but it wasn't an address change. She told me if I gave her my full account info she will be able to tell me more about it. I told her I don't feel comfortable doing that, she told me that's fine and told me to call the number on the back of my card instead if I want to.

So it might be legit. I'm not going to call anyone at this point, I'll just diligently monitor my account online for now.

I received a call from 302-731-1166 just now.  I listened to the recording asking me to call 866-518-1695 about one of my credit cards.  Due to some concern over whether this is legit from other posts, I decided to called the number (prepared to give fake info if they asked for sensitive info). My take: I think this is a third party company, maybe used by Bank of America or Visa, hired to independently verify a recent card change.

They greeted me with "Can I have your credit card number..." and I adamantly said "No".  So she said "what can I help you with today?".  I explained I was was told to call that number from a recording and didn't know why they called me and was hesitant to give them any info.  She said she could lookup which credit card there was an issue with by my name and phone (which they already had since they called me earlier so I gave the phone #).  She told me that a card under my daughter's name had an issue and gave me the type of card (Bank of America Visa) and the last 4 digits.  She said I could call the number on the back of the credit card instead of giving her any info for my peace of mind with Scammers, etc.

She wouldn't tell me what the issue was since I was not my daughter. I called my daughter and verified she had, in fact, yesterday added her husband to her account.  Based on the fact they weren't pushy, gave me accurate info about my daughter's own card, and told me I could accomplish the same thing through the bank I feel this is a legitimate, though unnecessary organization.  Why doesn't the bank just call their customer directly? (of course we STILL would think they were a scam!!) Anyway, no harm was done, no info give out so no scam opportunity here in my opinion.

12/26/12 Received a recorded message from 302-731-1166 claiming to be Bank of America and telling me to call Bank of America at 866-518-1695 for more information. I called Bank of America on one of their main customer service numbers (800-552-7302) to check it out. The rep (Kelly) I talked to called the 1695 number while I was on the phone with her and verified that 1695 is a valid number for the B of A Fraud Dept. Bottom line: 866-518-1695 is a valid Bank of America number.

Hey,

So i had my credit card info stolen like a month ago. So I'm SUPER paranoid about these calls. When i called back the 1866 number i didn't enter anything in. I thought it might be legit because I did recently change something on my account. To be safe I called BoA.

IT IS A LEGIT NUMBER. Don't panic. I did tell their fraud department that they're idiots for having a number that doesn't even say "hey you have reached bank of america"...it just asks you for your account information. I told them it was very negligent and makes people paranoid. They tell us not to give our info away but then they lead us to this strange number that doesn't say who they're calling from and just asks for your account number. So stupid and irresponsible.

My advice, just call the BoA number directly from their website. But don't worry the 1866 number is LEGIT.
