please see my help page at http://www.gabbyjim.com/Do-Not-Call-Farce.htm.  (Case Sensitive, trust me!)  No worries, nothing harmful there - I don't even count visits.  I worte the page myself just because I was ticked at all the folks out there breaking the law and scaming the system.  Here's a way to make them go away.  At least for a little while.  I don't even have any affilliate marketing there - yet (10/1/2012) - although I may, in the future, put a few ads there to try to pay for the hosting.

When my voice mail picked up, they hung up.  (Hee hee-hee, possibly because of my trick, below.  I?m just on this site to see who was calling, if I can.) - - - See below on the "fix" for this problem.

The law has no teeth!  Except for state lists (see below) reporting them ANYWHERE won't stop the calls.  However, this trick has worked very well for me and others.  Sometimes it takes two or three incoming calls before it "takes.?  You have to warn your friends and business contacts not to be fooled, and you MUST let ALL unknown numbers go to voice mail.  Find a telephone number that gives you that tone and message that says, "The number you have reached" (is out of service) or Google "Special Information Tones? for on-line sources.  I found a good one at http://www.yourhomenow.com/sit.html).  Record the tone and the first part of the message.  Then put it in the front of your voice mail greeting, like this: VM answers, plays tones and ?The number you have reached" (preferably the official telephone company voice)- - -(short pause- it's important) then, your own voice, "belongs to [your first name] - I'm unavailable right now, please leave your name and number and I'll call you back." - - the tones and phone company voice are the key - computerized dialers take your number off their list at the sound of the tones, and human telemarketers are often fooled into the same action before the phone company voice ends.  I use the sound recorder that comes with Windows (usually at C:\WINDOWS\system32\sndrec32.exe) and a cheap plug in microphone and external speakers to make the recording and then play it into my Voice Mail greeting.

Sadly, there IS no EFFECTIVE legal action you can take - but this is the way it is SUPPOSED to work....

You file a formal complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (http://www.ftc.gov/)- the link to the "Do Not Call" registry complaint is https://www.donotcall.gov/register/reg.aspx. Then they file your complaint in a database where it sits unheeded until - - - some OTHER law enforcement agency asks them for their data.

The FTC / Do Not Call Registry is a paper tiger with no real teeth. Nothing will be done unless the number becomes an annoyance to one of THEM, or to some congressman or other hi-power individual with "pull".  You have to track the offender down, then get some law enforcement agency to sue them in court (you can't do it yourself!).  What needs to be done is pester our congress critters until they change the law so that private citizens can sue these people in FEDERAL court.  And, of course, unless the court bankrupts and jails them, they will simply change their name and phone number and go back to business as usual.

Also, some rascals USE the "Do-Not-Call Registry" as a SOURCE of numbers to call!  This is especially true of so-called charities, politicians, and so-called "survey" folks (or those that PRETEND to be).  Again, the law has no teeth!  Your complaints just go into an obscure database and molder.  Think of the final disposition of "The Ark of the Covenant" in Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark.  ALSO, remember, CELL PHONES are automatically ?Do-No-Call? numbers, and if you put your cell phone on a Do-Not-Call list, you may be INVITING unwanted calls!  (See above).

This alternate trick used to work, but puts you on the other side of the law with some small risk.  I used to have a computer program (that died as a result of Y2K) that I could set up to just call and call and call - over and over non-stop, until someone answered, they it sent fax tones, hung up and started over.  I programmed it to call the very number they were calling ME from - tied up their line and reversed the tables.  (With the advent of Magic Jack and Vonnage, no long distance charges!)  Now THEY had to take ME to court - fat chance, because they KNOW I will counter sue "on the spot".

One last ray of hope - SOME states have their OWN Do-No-Call registry - if yours is one, get on that list - those states that have teeth in their laws will "Nail" those *&$% (bleep)s

Same experience as above, except they hang up before the recording comes on.  Calls minimum of twice a day.  Twice I've dashed down the stairs, thinking the call was "friendly"--almost broke my neck.  They hang up after 3 rings.  If they don't want to talk with you, who do they bother calling?!  Seems odd that someone in the business of making contacts would play these games.

Same experience as other poster. Multiple class per day, no one responds if you pick up. Calling back gets recording about being added to the Do Not Call list and wants 10-digit number. Calls back within a few hours anyway.

This number calls my cell phone twice per day. I usually just ignore it.  They NEVER leave a voice mail. This time, however, I called back.  The first time, I got a recording that said "If you would like to be added to the no-call list, press 1"  I briefly hesitated and the got disconnected itself.

I called back.  I decided since they already have my phone number and they are harassing the hell out of me, I would play along and get put on the list.  I pressed 1.  It then asked me to enter my 10 digit phone number followed by the # sign.  I did this.  The phone call immediately disconnected, again.
