They called, looking for someone with the same name as my husband.  I called to find out what they wanted; it was for a different person with the same name, but, like an idiot (because it was a law office) I gave them my husband's and my SS numbers.

These idiots (Cohen&Slamowitz) are leaving prerecorded computer generated messages on my answering machine for someone I do not even know (Jessica Plantain)
These morons are so inept that the message states to hangup if I am NOT that person and if I continue to listen I am admitting that I AM that person (which I'm not)
Well, how the heck can I do that if I am not even there and the completed message is already on my machine.
The callback phone number on the message was 866-542-8950
not who message was left for

Your law practices are below being the standards of worthy law office. You leave messages on business answering machines that do not belong to the person you are calling. Your message states to hangup if I am NOT that person and if I continue to listen I am admitting that I AM that person. Answering machines cannot hang up for you if you are not the person you are suppose to be calling. If you are really a law firm a person would make the call not a computer.

New York Residents Claim Cohen & Slamowitz Engaged in Rampant and Abusive Collection Violations
Case ID: 3306 | Credit / Debt | 04/13/2004
A statewide class action has been filed in New York against collection specialists, Cohen & Slamowitz. The action is brought on behalf of all New York residents who received form type collection letters from the firm and/or who have been alleged victims of the firm’s alleged harassing collection tactics. The action is brought under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and seeks actual and statutory damages as well as injunctive and declaratory relief.

According to consumers, Cohen & Slamowitz have engaged in a systematic and intentional course of behavior aimed at grossly violating the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Under the act, any misleading, unfair, deceptive or coercive actions conducted in an effort to collect alleged outstanding consumer debts are strictly forbidden. According to consumers, Cohen & Slamowitz have engaged in personal campaigns against alleged debtors that have run roughshod over the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Consumers allege that they have been violently harassed on the telephone by employees of Cohen & Slamowitz and have been threatened with jail time, law suits and garnishment of wages. The consumers further allege that they have been insulted by employees of Cohen & Slamowitz and have been referred to, for example, as "deadbeats". The consumers further assert that this conduct has extended to other family members that answer the telephone. In addition, the consumers allege that employees of Cohen & Slamowitz have informed them that they have knowledge of the consumers' financial history and current property holdings, bank account balances and retirement investments and that they have been advised to liquidate these assets to repay their alleged debts or risk losing them. Even when legal counsel has been retained and numerous requests have been made to cease and desist all alleged harassing activity, the consumers allege that employees of Cohen & Slamowitz continued to call them repeatedly.

The consumers claim that Cohen & Slamowitz did not limit their alleged abusive tactics to oral communications. According to consumers, they also received harassing letters, in some instances as many as 375 individual letters. The consumers claim that these "form" type communications also violated the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. According to the consumers, these letters failed not notify them that they were sent from a debt collector, failed to provide them with the statutorily mandated statement outlining the consumers' right to 30 days to dispute the validity of the debt, created a false belief that an attorney had reviewed and evaluated the consumers' debt, and threatened to take actions against the consumers that cannot be legally taken or that were not intended to be taken. The consumers assert that all of these alleged actions amount to misleading, unfair, coercive and abusive behavior and violate the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and entitle them to damages.

OMG.. These fools are crazy they got a server to come to my building  with intent to serve me with a summons.  Since I was not home they made copies of the summons and taped it in the lobby wall and taped it to every doos on the first floor b/c the doors do not display apt # and I live on the first floor. How embarassing!!!!.  This form of practice has to STOP.

These people called and threatened all sorts of legal action..claiming that I owed them money on a credit card that I did not have and never had. They predated their letter and then threatened to take away all my retirement, social security, [property, etc... they refused to provide any documentation and  said that they were 'investigating' it. However, they  siad that unles I paid all the money, they would take everything I had. These people are scam artists and now I have to go through all this garbage with courts and notaries to make them go away. What can be done? I know that many other people are having the same trouble.

I was sued by this law firm when they represented a collection agency.  It was over old credit card debt.  I hired a consumer debt defense attorney in Buffalo and we easily beat their case saving me thousands of dollars.  If you are sued or contacted by them, don't do nothing, get help!

My father in law just started having problems with this company.  He is 87 years old and has never bought anything that wasn't life essential.  (Part of the great generation).  This company should be ashamed of themselves.  I'm contacting the BBB.

The somehow got my phone number (which was supose to be unlisted) and are trying to collect a debt from my Uncle, whom has never had a credit card or even a bank account or gass bill in his name. Out of 5 days this week, I got 7 prerecorded messages asking for him, and to "Hang up if I am not him"... they should be ashamed.

And Dymond, that is totally illegal. You can file a civil case against them for posting your debs. The ony noyice that is allowed to be hung up is an eviction notice, and only on the door of your residence. PROSECUTE THESE JERKS!!

They have been calling for months.  Any and all debts that I incurred were cleared by bankruptcy in July 2010.  They are ruthless.  One call for instance stated, "you will be prosecuted and face jail time if you do not return this call". Really.  I lost my business in the 2nd coming of the great depression.  In October of 2007.  Followed by litigation with a former business partner, followed by a divorce, followed by bankruptcy.  You can't get blood from a stone so leave me alone.
