Prank Call
just got a call from a withheld #, Indian man (James) called me by my name and proceeded to tell me he works IT for Windows and he wanted me to log on to my computer and allow him to remove a trojan virus from it. I told him that my husband would do it when he got home and then James started yelling at me that I just needed to log on my computer and let him walk me through removing the virus. I asked for a # to call when my husband got home. 866-856-4811 x-213 is what he gave me..I called it and was immediately put on hold, never spoke to a person. My biggest concern is how he got my cell # and knew my name.

He asked for a fee to fix my computer from his computer. After I finished talking to the guy, I disconnected my computer from the internet.I was smart and didn't give him any personal info... altho he probably already axcessed it.

These same guys called me last week with the same story. He persuaded me to sign into my account and was somehow controlling my screen. Then his "Supervisor" came on with more of the same. At this point my husband came home. I explained what was going on. He took over the call. Finally my husband accused the guy of being dishonest and hung up. The thing I don't understand is why they bother making these calls and how it benefits them. Can someone please explain it to me. ...I really do not understand the whole thing.

A serious sounding fellow from "Microsoft" with a medium Indian accent and who called himself Andrew called to speak to my wife about her new Microsoft product having a serious security problem.  Since she was out of town, I asked him to email her with the information, which he declined for "privacy" reasons (his privacy, it turned out). I took his number - 866-856-4811 and called her about it.  At this point, I was slightly suspicious, but I knew she was too savvy to get in trouble. She called, and balked when he wanted her to do some command line entries on her new device.  He grew very impatient and implored her to do what he asked "for her own safety". When she refused, he chided her for wasting his time and hung up.
I found it interesting that he knew she had a new Microsoft device and called for her by name.....

Here in the UK this scam has been exposed on several TV Consumer Programmes. They even had the Head of Security for Microsoft on one programme.  He confirmed that neither Microsoft, nor its partners, would ever 'phone.  It would be a breach of their privacy rules.  The people who 'phone are usually from India, using fake UK and USA| numbers.  They know nothing about our computers and everything they say is lies.  The so called Licence number which they give is, in fact, the Windows Licence Number and is the same on all computers operating Windows, worldwide.  The aim of the scam is to get remote access to the computers and, if they are successful, they will install spyware/malware to steal personal information like bank details and passwords.  I would suggest you have your computer checked out locally if you gave them remote access.  You should also keep an eye on your bank account and, if you have access to another computer. change your passwords.  If you do not have such access then wait until after your computer has been checked out before changing the passwords.

The problem is that once your serial number is provided they could very well start tracking all your keystrokes on the computer.  It is never a good idea to give over your computer information to a third party despite who they claim.  If in doubt, call Microsoft for support.  They have good programs and support staff to help you.

I received a telephone call from a John Calder who claimed to be calling from Microsoft Support Center and he wanted me to access my computer for a potential virus.  Being suspicious I asked him for his telephone number to call him back and he gave me telephone number 866-856-4811 ext 9025.  I called and it went directly to someone that answered as "Technical Support Group".  I asked the person for the company name and he said support plaza, not affiliated with Microsoft, but they obtained information from Microsoft that the junk files that I receive contain malicious programming.  I then said if that was the case, then microsoft should stop it, and not a third party.  Disconnected the call.

Got the same as all you guys. My caller was Sandy from Microsoft. Told me about someone trying to access my computer and...long story short...wanted my IP.
HE was the one trying to access my computer!
Told him I didn't feel comfortable giving out that info and said I would ask when my husband got home. He wanted to know when he would be home and when I told him probably in 15 minutes he told me they closed in 10 minutes and I could call them at 866-856-4811.  My husband immediately checked out the number and said they were a scam. I tried the number and just got endless music.

just got a call from this number wanting remote access to my computer,, told me that I had a hacker trying to access my Windows. I told him that there was no way, my computers are brand new, he kept coming up with excuses for access. then he kept saying it was a 'Trojan" virus from a down load.  I told him that I need to talk to my son and he was gone, if there was a number to call back, he said yes, hours are :   9:30am - 7:30 pm,  M-SA, his name was Sandy at ext, 213

He also said that this company is hooked up to customers with Windows and we were red flagged that we were being hacked and he needed remote access to see where it was coming from and remove it.

I just received a call on my cell from this company and the number came up as 00000000.  They said the name of their company was Support Plaza, in New York.  As others have mentioned, a man with an Indian accent told me that they were tech support for Windows, and they had been receiving error messages from my computer.  He asked if I would log into my computer, I had been about to log in when he called anyway, so I told him I was doing just that.  He didn't understand my phrasing and kept asking me to log into my computer.  I asked for his company name, where they were located, then asked his name, once he gave me that information, I asked for his supervisor's name.  He kept repeating what I had asked and when I had to ask again, he would say, "I am giving you my phone number".,...long pause, when I asked for his supervisor's name he acted confused.  I told him, "If you are asking for me to allow you access to my private computer, I need to know this is a legitimate business.  The line then went dead.  I called back and reached another man with an Indian accent, and could hear what sounded like telemarketers in the background.  I asked the name of the company and where they were located, and asked if they had a gentleman there by the name of Kelvin...the name I was given, and he had repeated it several times.  The man asked if I wanted to speak to Kevin.  I declined and hung up.

Edward has the same phone ext 213!  I asked him how he knew I even owned a computer and he said because they keep "good records."  He kept saying he could prove it to me.  I just had a feeling this was a scam so I asked for a call back number.  He provided 1-866-856-4811 and told me he was from Support Plaza.  I called my IT department at work and they gave me this sight and sure enough...just as I expected, dirty little scammers!
