They pose or impersonate as lawyer or law firn to try and scare people into paying invoices. It is a criminal offence and we also have a litigation pending.

In any case they would engage a collection agency not a law firm. I am far to busy to really care but they have f****d around with a few good friends of mine and I will take this litigation as something fun.

This gym is by far the worst I have ever seen and the so called trainers can not even take care of themselves let alone train others.

my daughter keeps getting calls from these a**holes also. she was conned into joining the so called "goodlife gym" and she went back to cancel the deal and they told her she was stuck. She had no job and is a full time student when this happened and they now have this stupid collection ( so called law firm ) phoning my house almost everyday, even after I told them my daughter doesn't get the messanges they leave. They are using another number calling our house 1-866-681-1772 they must have a slew of numbers they use. I think bell Canada is stop them from harrassing people
Goodlife needs to be shut down by the licencing bureau for bad business practices.

Yes it is true, I called the GM of my club and stated that I was livid that this law firm was acting like as a collection agency of a contract that I had not even missed or been late on!!!  They need to rework their accounting dept at the very least

Yeah, just recieved a call from 1-866-681-1772...and it sounded like a 15 year old kid on the other end of the phone.  He was looking for my girlfriend who hasn't had a membership at the GoodLife gym now for a couple years.  He gave a case #, and identified himself as John (Jon?) from the Van Moorleham Lawfirm.

I heard a bunch of noise in the background (which made me suspicious), and I asked if this was a call from a call center.  He responded "no", and that it was just a large lawfirm?  At the end of the conversation, just before hanging up, this guy starts laughing on the phone...and I ask "what are you laughing about!?".  Then the phone hangs up.  WTF?

So I then called Goodlife (1-800-387-2524) to inquire about this call.  The lady on the other end of the phone told me that yes...Van Moorleham Lawfirm is indeed a "collections agency".  So I ask her why they are allowed to identify themselves as a lawfirm? No real answer...just "yes, they are a lawfirm"...and "your girlfriend will just have to pay whatever money is still due"...anything over 75 days past due?  Then I proceed to tell her about the guy laughing on the other end of the phone...and what a great "professional" company they're associated with.  She told me to mention it when my girlfriend calls back.

You've got to be kidding me...f*cking gym memberships...what a scam!  I hope they all go under!!!

Hi again all,

Following my sending a copy of the letter I pasted above to Goodlife, they called me a few minutes ago and told me they were dropping the entire matter.  Their case hinges around trying to hold me to a clause in the contract AFTER accepting a buy-out payment to cancel the contract, so in law they have no contract to hold me to.

Time will tell on whether the "law firm" will give up, but Goodlife have backed out.  If anyone wants information on how to do this, email me at edward [at] e-c-t.ca

Is what I found online for them. Yet they provided me with a different address and I know I am due to make a payment to them.

I called Goodlife and they told me that this Company: Casey Van Moorlehem Law Firm is their Collection Agency that they deal with.

Even the "Goodlife's Member Experience Club" told me the same information.

Here's the alternative address  I want to share with you that the Collections Company: Casey Van Moorlehem Law Firm gave me.

185 Woodbridge Ave, Vaughan, Ontario L4L 2S9

Note: when making a payment: They will only accept: Express Post or Priority Post and they want the Tracking number that you get.

I believe they are legitimate. But I will be contacting goodlife to make sure my payments to this company are received so I can say Good bye to Goodlife and their training fees. I am still owing 10 sessions. Which Goodlife pointed out to me that they will not reimburse but instead owe me the next time I come to the gym.

Cheers.

We bought out of a contract with Goodlife.  They charged us anyway.  Now this firm of jokers are calling us.  I'm charging them $10 each time they call, for 'administration purposes' in looking up what to me is a dead file.

I got a letter from them, no letterhead, no printed envelope.  I responded with the following:

"WITHOUT PREJUDICE

Dear Sir,

Your reference number xxx  Goodlife Fitness vs Edward Sheldon

We are ready to proceed to court in this matter.

We need to know at this point whether you will be attorneys for Goodlife Fitness in this matter, and if so whether you wish legal papers to be served on yourselves or on Goodlife Fitness to be forwarded to you by them.

Please be advised that we do not believe we have any outstanding moneys owed to Goodlife Fitness and have no intention of making any payments.  We are in the process of drawing up papers naming them as defendants should they, or you, continue to harass us.

Please advise how you wish to proceed.

Best regards"

I'll post back here when I have news.

Good Life is a horrible company and I have a lawsuit against them now for their businss practices and they are suing me for two month because I finally said enough was enough and put a stop payment on the account.  I got yes your canceled from the local place and then from the national customer service and then over the internet but they still kept taking money out.  Then they have the nerve to go after me when I put stop payment on the account.

For those of you experiencing this turn the table on them and sue their a**es.  It may be just for the principle of the thing but dang nabbit it does make you feel satisfied.

Listen we have gone to the club personally at least 6 times to straightem this out....and they keep telling us we do not owe them any money...and yet these people still are calling and harassing us....so if any of you have paid out money to these people... I am wondering if you have been taken for a ride!
They initially sent letters in the mail saying we owed them around 60 dollars. We went to the club to straighten it out as said, and they said it was a misunderstanding and they would take care of it....yeah right...now we are getting calls from some collection agency...which sounds very fishy...since they are not talking to you personally....but through an automatic voice message which was very hard to understand....which makes me once again think "fraud".
I personally do believe that Goodlife should be brought to task on this matter. If I owe them money which I don't I would have paid them personally right at the club. Anyway, anyone thinking of joining a Goodlife Club...DON'T!

Yes we should read the very small print very carefully especially from an outfit like Good Life Fitness.  I signed a membership agreement for 1 year, you would think binding on both sides. Paid my membership and fees every month without fail, even though I used the facitlity no more that 15-20 times in the year due to an injury which my personal trainer was aware of and the person who kept calling from Good Life to see if I was going to the club. When I was checking my bank statement I noticed payments were still being taken out after the year was up, when Good Life was contacted they said I had to cancel the membership!!! What I want to know is what was the 1 year contract all about?

I just received a phone call from Van Moorlehem law firm as well.  They scared the crap out of me because it was pertaining to my 17 year old son and they absolutely refused to give me any information on the case even though he is a minor.  He's not a boy that gets in trouble but I didn't have any clue why they would call me so I called them back demanding as his mother to tell me and they still refuse.  So I researched the firm and found all these comments.  It makes me so happy that its just this.. Goodlife is a horrible company because my son join them three times he gave them banking information and I know because I went with him and they kept saying his payments were bouncing and we would have to take his books in to show the money was there and the payments still weren't coming out.  They kept charging him for bounced payments.  So as his mother I called them to find out what was going on and we submitted another form with bank information.  Yet it still didn't go through so I told them to cancel his membership because they were destroying his credit they charged him the 99$ fee but he's only 17 with a part time job takes time for him to pay this plus all the screw ups they did and they did send that company after him...

I know as a 17 year old you are not legally binding to sign any kind of contract.  They made me so angry in what they have done I should tell him not to pay it.  But as a mother I would not be teaching him anything I would love for him to grow up and be responsible and a contract is a contract and you know the rules before you sign it.  Therefore he will be paying it today.  I was already taking him today to pay it.  But they should not be allowed to scare people like that

This is just a thought, but would anyone like me to make available some templates for people to counter these a**holes?

What worked for me was stopping being reactive and starting to be proactive.  A couple of examples:

1)  I recorded all calls that had that - or similar - caller ID.  If they used a new number, I simply hung up the second I knew it was them, thereby making them call back and made a note of the new number.

2)  After each call I made word processor notes of any important points.  These first two steps are the first stage in turning the tables.

3)  Once everything was in position I informed them of the following:
   a)  Their calls were being recorded
   b)  I considered the matter already resolved, and had closed the file
   c)  I was legally allowed to charge a fee for re-opening the file
   d)  Each time I had to re-open the "dead" file I would charge them $10
   e)  When they owed me more then they were chasing, I would sue them

4)  Each subsequent call I reminded them of the date they'd been told the things in (3) above, reminded them that me talking to them right then and there was costing them $10, charged to the Goodlife account they were chasing.

5)  When they'd run up so many $10 charges (it took 2 months before they ran up $100 of 'charges') that they now owed more to me in charges than they were claiming I owed Goodlife, and by extension them I started asking THEM how they intended to pay, and warning that if they didn't I'd sue them.  That normally ended the call since the phone-monkeys didn't know how to handle that

6)  Finally when I got tired of it, I looked up a lot of publicly available court documents.  I wrote my own following that format, and I took it to my local Goodlife.  I asked to speak to the manager, and told him that this was his companies last chance to avoid litigation; that if he refused to promise to take any action, then I would go straight to the court house and file the case.  I also asked if this lawyer company were to be named as the defendant's council, and told him I needed clarification on that.

7)  The FOLLOWING DAY I got an email from him.  HE had contacted head office, who had agreed - without prejudice (i.e. admitting nothing) to drop the case, and had advised their debt collectors accordingly.

A few things about this.

Firstly, it gave them the opportunity to drop a case that would be iffy at best, and could conceivably be a public relations nightmare.  They took it; after all, they could afford to.  Companies like this make a LOT of money from iffy contracts they push people into, contracts that a court would likely nullify.  They don't want a president being set.  It's a drop in the ocean to them after all.

So - would it be of interest to anyone if I made some document templates to help others do this?

I can be contacted by email privately at edward [at] e-c-t.ca if anyone wants further information.

Initially from reading a blog called "Recording industry vs the people" which links to PDFs of ALL the court documents involved in the Recording Industry of America vs anyone they happen to sue.  The formats are very easy to follow, and to someone not used to standing up in court (such as, let's say, the manager of your local gym) to have someone come in dressed smartly, and produce such formal looking documents from briefcase quite frankly scares the bejazus out of them.  I don't know what my local manager said to head office after I spoke to him, but it obviously worked because within 48hrs I had written confirmation that Goodlife had ceased to chase this, and I haven't heard from El Bozo Law Firm since.

My incident is really bizarre. I have never even been a Goodlife member and I'm getting a call from these guys about money I owe for not paying or canceling a membership. I apparently owe over $300 to Goodlife. It's scary because they are calling and using my name, but the bank they say they tried to get money out of isn't even my primary bank. I don't even live remotely close to a Goodlife and ironically I own my own fitness studio about an hour away from the closest location. Nothing adds up.

I had a call from this company as well and thought I would check them out on the internet before I called back. I came on here and was worried as it seemed as eveyone knew what they were talking about and that the company was phoney. I decided to check with the Upper Law Society of Canada and they replied to me below. I have since contacted the company and paid a debt I owed for past due payments on a contract I defaulted on with Goodlife Fitness. I wish that the rest of you would verify your information before posting your lies on here. You worried me for nothing!!!

Here's the information I received from the Law Society of Upper Canada:

I am in receipt of your inquiry regarding the verification of a lawyer that you believe is named Casey Von Morlehan.

I can confirm that we do have a William Casey Von Moorlehem listed as a lawyer licensee with the Law Society of Upper Canada. He is currently listed as a Sole Practitioner and is in good standing.

For those saying that GoodLife Fitness isn't a scam and the lawyers firm as well, you're clearly mistaken. I paid them the ENTIRE debt I owed left on the contract and closed the account because I no longer needed the services of the gym (had one at school now). This was over 200$. Then approximately two years later they started calling saying that I owe an additional 300$ and I had never closed the account. I even have a witness who can verify that I did (was present when this all happened). Now I'd like to know how it's even possible for them to continue charging me member fees when I haven't been a member for years! So yes, they do scam people. I've known several individuals now that this has happened to. I don't doubt they're a real firm. But I'm a full time student who lives on my own and don't intend to give them a dime of my damn money.

I received a call from 866 940-9454. I'm guessing that it is the new number from which they can try and hide their deceitful practices.

Any lawyer who allows his name to be used for the Goodlife pursuit of screwing clients must be reported to the BBB and the Law Society of the province he works in.

This lawyer is named Peter Stephan, Stefan? something like that. He obviously gets a percentages of the collections and that's all he cares about. I have made an enquiry to the Law Society in Ontario.

These guys are hiding behind their employees. The contracts that you are sucked into signing are not supported by the employees, except the few naive ones who are learning what a scam service is before they go practice it on someone themselves.

Only Patch has the authority to waive fees for poor service, despite what the contract says.

This Patch makes me ill. I will continue to write about this and if you want to contact me (even you Patch) please do at ih8_goodlife_fitness@yahoo.ca.

I signed up with this gym for what I thought was a month-to-month membership, that's what the sales agent said.  Turns  out I signed a one year agreement.
I then wanted 6 personal training sessions to learn about free-weights and proper-form.  I asked the "training manager" to speak with me regarding this.  She wanted to get to know me and talk about my goals, I thought I was getting good service, then  I told her that I was a part-time waiter(mid twentys) and that after these six-sessions I would have to think about how many I could afford later, but that it would probably be something like once a week or bi-weekly.  She then tried to hard sell me on 5 sessions a week....that's 1000$ a month.  She kept going on about goals and what it takes to achieve them and I had to say "no" about 10 times before she got the message.  I then re-iterated that I wanted a trainer that I liked and who could teach me free-weights because who needs lessons for machines?  Anyways, I managed to get out of her office in-tact and bought the six sessions.  After I met with my trainer and asked him about free-weights, he replied that he couldn't help me with free-weights because he needed to observe me really closely whenever I used them and he didn't want to be liable for me hurting myself.  And that because I  didn't book enough sessions he couldn't over-see my progress in this way( I never saw a trainer in the free-weights section once).  So I canceled all my remaining sessions and the next day went in to cancel my membership.  Like most of you, I was confronted by the 100$ cancellation fee, paid it, and was assured that because I canceled today that no more money would be taken out of my account.  Lies.  Today after reviewing my chequing account information I found another withdrawal for 27$.  Tomorrow I will go to the gym and ask what the hell is going on, and post my findings.  I do realize that on the contract they require one months notice, and that this might be the last withdrawal.  I hope it is.

Hello All,

Casey Van Moorlehem seems to be a master of all trades.  I heard that he is handling a personal injury case and that is a joke and chasing down doing debt collections at the same time?  His office number is listed in Woodbride and is (905) 856-6655.  I think it would be a helpful alternate number if you need to reach this so called joke of a lawyer.  Wow, lucky to all of us, we can even add him to our Facebook accounts.  I can't stop laughing. I  agree that this "law firm" needs to be investigated by the police and or other agencies.

My sincerest regards to all of you who have had to deal with this. Hope this helps.
