Got a call from this number, they were asking for a SIM card for a customer and asked us to bill it to their account, this is a bogus operation, and sure smells fishy...

866-954-0492 is the number for a call center operated by Sprint. It is physically located in central Kentucky. About 650 people work there in several different departments.
I work at this call center, so this is what I know from working there. This is what Sprint refers to as a "back office" center, which means it is not primary inbound customer service. You don't call this number when you have a routine problem, they call you to resolve an issue already on your account. When you call in and complain and they say something like "somebody will get back to you about this", this is the place that gets back to you.
The only time people should be receiving calls from this number is if their Sprint account has a case or dispute open on it and they are calling to discuss or resolve the issue. We are to call any phones on the account (and the home and work numbers if the customer has provided them to u s) to contact the customer, so if you're getting a call for somebody you know but isn't you, it may be because they also have a phone on the same account. If you get a call from this number and don't have a Sprint account it's a wrong number (we do have to call 411 if we can't get ahold of the customer otherwise, so if you have the same name as a customer and live in the same town, you might still get calls, sorry, but we have to do it.)
Also, if they call you please check your voice mail. People calling from this number are supposed to leave voice mail with who they are calling for, that they are calling from Sprint (and which department) and their callback number (with their extension). Please don't just call this number back and start to dump your issue on the first person that you reach, they quite likely aren't even working in the same department that called you (remember, several hundred people are calling from this number). Listen to your voicemail and know who you're trying to reach, and if you can't make out the message be prepared to give the person on the other end a cellular number on your Sprint account so they can pull up the account and see how they have to direct your call.

i got a call from this number, and they left a voicemail. they said they're from sprint, but i'm not with sprint. i've been with another phone company for a year now. why call me now?
