Prank Call
I just had my first encounter with John Washington. Told me my mom won a MercedesBenz, 5.5 million dollars in a check, and 25,000 cash. i asked how and told me a computer did a random raffle and her name come out for first place. Said the company was based in Las Vegas and that he was calling from New York. he said they had offices in NewYork and Miami. That was how i knew there was something wrong since my caller id said Kingston Jamaica 18765667622
he told me to go to Walmart and buy a Reload MoneyPack Scratch Card (claim card) and put $499.the $499 was for shipping or something and not to give up the card until i saw the check, money, and turned on the car. Also said its a certified cashiers check and that it was through bank of america. i tried to get as much info as possible. we just covered scamers from jamaica in my psychology class. i guess he really thought i was some sort of sucker hahaha
becareful of these disgusting people!

Prank Call
I'm glad I came on here and read.  They called me 3 times in a row and I answered it the third time.  With the whole blah blah blah you won and that the carrier was in my state and would be at my home in 5 mins to present me with a pch prize.   I know They don't call first takes away the surprise!   When he called back yet again from Jamaica he said the carrier was there and wanted to know if I called John Washington to confirm my winnings.  I asked him who I was and how exactly the currier was in arkansas and he was calling from Jamaica. I told him that it was very wrong to try and scam me as I don't have the time to pay them to pay me.  If I really won just take the fees out of the check that I would not be cashing.  He told me to have a nice day and hung up!

Heard from John Washington yesterday.  He said I'd won $1.5M and a new Mercedes from Publishers Clearing House.  He said I needed to pay a transfer fee for the car by going to Western Union and using my ATM card for a $499 money order.

I called PCH.  PCH does not notify winners by telephone and asks for no money up front.  I gave Mr. Washington's calling number to PCH security.

Had I gone to Western Union, I was supposed to call Mr. Washington and tell him I was there.  Since he insisted that I use my ATM card for the transaction, he was probably phishing for my bank account information.

Hope you read the previous posts about this number. The only thing you "won" is the opportunity to be scammed.  Don't fall for it.

DO NOT return the call from someone calling from a 876 area code.
This is not a toll free "800" number, it is the international long distance code for the island nation of Jamaica. You are charged international and long distance rates for calling this number. Other international/long distance area codes are 809, 284, and 649.
http://www.att.net/smartcontrols-809AreaCode

Scammers use these numbers to not only try to scam you out of money, but also sting you with high phone call rates.

Also:
It is a scam:
http://info.pch.com/consumer-information/fraud-protection

They never require any money, purchases, taxes, fees, or deposits of any kind to get your prize.

Publishers Clearing House DOES NOT call, email, FAX, mail, any advanced notice that you have won.

"If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to represent PCH, or claiming to be one of our employees,  and asked to send or wire money (for any reason whatsoever, including taxes); or send a pre-paid gift card or Green Dot Moneypak card in order to claim a sweepstakes prize ? DON?T!  It?s a SCAM. If you are sent a check, told it?s a partial prize award, and asked to cash it and send a portion back to claim the full prize award, DON?T.  The check is fake, but the SCAM is real!

Publishers Clearing House does not operate this way and would NEVER ask for money to claim a prize award.  PCH employees would never contact you personally or in advance to notify you of a prize award.  Our prize awards are presented just the way you see in our popular TV commercials, ?live and in person? by our Prize Patrol, with balloons, champagne and check in hand - - and with no advance notification!"

The call is coming from Jamaica and that guarantees that it is a scam.  No legitimate contest requires you to pay to receive the prize.  Any taxes, etc are automatically deducted from your winnings.  Besides, Publisher's Clearing House never calls winners, the Prize Patrol just shows up at your front door.  They also have a warning about this scam on their website.

Hi I have just gotten a call from John Washington claiming that I have won 1.5 million dollars and a Mercedes Benz. He told me in order for me to receive the money I need to send him a gift card from Walmart in the amount of $499. This will need to be giving to the person that will arrive at my home in 1 hour.

Prank Call
Just got the same call - John Washington, 1.5 million dollars, new car, blah blah blah. He asked me how I felt about winning and this is how it went:
"Who are you trying to reach?"
"Excuse me?"
"Do you have a name of who you're trying to notify?"
"Are you not the owner of this phone number?"
(lie) "No, I am not. And besides, if you're calling to give away something like that, then you ought to have a name or something to identify the person that you're trying to contact."
And then he hung up on me. A bit rude, don't you think?
He should have chosen a different name and should really have closed the window or gone inside. Wind blowing into the phone makes it hard for me to make out when he says something as I try to discredit him.
Fun times!

Received a call from this number from a man telling me he had a package for me.  I asked him to take me off the list, as I had just received an unsolicited call from a woman with a Jamaican accent an hour ago who refused to take me off her list. He told me he is from publishers clearing house, in advised him that he was not, as his call is from Jamaica.  He proceeded to list off all his "locations" in Hawaii.  I told him to take me off his mailing list immediately and said I do not appreciate or accept unsolicited offers.. He refused and then told me I had a sexy voice and started telling me about his "package" and how he wanted to use it on me.  I went ballistic and told Him to never F'ing call this number again. He insisted that he just wanted to talk to me and hear my voice and continued to talk about what he would like to do to me.  I used some colorful words and told him to never call me again.

Jane, thank you for sharing your experience. This particular scam is the subject of an ongoing Federal probe using the code name, JOLT.

You might be as surprised as I was to learn that there are over 30,000 calls placed DAILY from Jamaica to the United States for the purpose of trying to extort/swindle money. I wholeheartedly concur with your assessment that these foul smelling little animals have no more than a natural intelligence and that listening to them speak on the phone is very painful. While simply hanging up ends your immediate problem, it does nothing to stop them from repeatedly calling you.

Here is what does work. Record every call. Try to extract as much information as possible from the black stained rodent who is calling you. Post that information here and on other websites dedicated to stopping fraud.
