876 is the country code for Jamaica.  Although you can reach such numbers by dialing a "1" in front of them (unless they are blocked by your carrier), they are NOT located in the United States or Canada.  Most cell phone providers will not let you call back 876 numbers unless you specifically enable international calling on your cell phone.

If you call them back, you can expect to see a bill for an international call, and possibly in addition, a very expensive pay-for-service charge added to your bill that could be tens or even hundreds of dollars per minute.  The pay-for-service charges are shared between the Jamaican phone company supply the service and the person who owns the number.  It is difficult to have these charges removed from your bill, because (1) you DID dial that number deliberately, and (2) your phone company has already paid the charges to the Jamaican phone company.

Rule of thumb -- unless you already know someone in Jamaica and the phone number he or she calls from, don't answer calls from "876" numbers.  And don't call them back -- they are NOT toll free.  And if they offer you anything for free, it is almost 100% guaranteed to be a scam.  Be grateful if your cell phone provider does not allow you to call back these numbers.

Just got a call from a man at this number. He claimed to be with UPS and needed my home address to deliver a "package." I told him that I would come pick it up from UPS and that I needed his location. With a Spanish accent "But your package is in Farmington, why would you go all the way to Farmington to pick up your package if we can deliver it for free?" He says. He hung up after I told him that he is not getting my address.

Male voice called saying that he was from UPS and that I had won a car that they would deliver to me by 2:30. I laughed in his face for about two minutes and asked where he was from. He said they were from Texas and I said he didn't sound Texan. He asked if I wanted the prize or not. I said he was lying and he hung up.

I received a call from 8763698640. Thought it sounded like a Spanish accent.  When I thought it was a familiar voice, I asked if it was that person.  he said, "Yes".  He said he was a friend of the family.

I got a call today from this number. He claimed to be from Winners International. He claimed I had won $850,000 and a new BMW. I said that I dont remember signing up for anything. He told me I won it by shopping at my favorite grocery store! Hahaha! They wanted to deliver it today at 3:30 but I needed to have my ID and a loaded CVS Greenbucks card. Plus I needed to pay $300 shipping and handling. When I told him that I was not interested, he said, all because you dont want to pay the shipping and handling fee? I said yes. Then I asked, how many people actually fall for this? He proceeded to hang up.

I got a call from a male person today (09-21-10) on my cell phone.  I have registered with the DO NOT CALL REGISTERY.  The person spoke with an accent sort of from India.  The person said that he was from the postal service and I had been elected to receive 40,000.00 dollars.  The person kept mis-pronouncing words during his speech.  I told him I did not want to talk to him.  He then spoke in a forgien language.  I hung up the phone.  Obviously, this is a scam because no one calls you up and tries to given anyone large sums of money.  I should have asked for his name and asked him not to call back.  He has not tried to call back.   BEWARE of these idiots.  Money is hard to come by and times are hard.
