June 26, 2014 - I also received a call from a woman at Book Whirl. She told me everything their company could/would do to market my book and that an associate would call me back if I gave her a good time for him to call. I just happened to be on vacation and told her my home phone was not good because I have a day job but if she would send me information I'd review and if interested I would contact them. It took 4 days for someone to email me the info (vague to say the least). Which led me to investigating their website, and also google is a wonderful thing because I found these posts.

For me, self publishing, there are just too many possible scams out there and I really don't want to take a chance on someone I've never heard of. Besides, it's not that I don't know what to do - it's saving up the funds in order to do it right. I emailed them back and said not to call my home phone again and that at this time I was NOT interested in marketing services. I'm hoping that will be the end of it. (fingers crossed)

After more research, Book Whirl looks like a ligimate book marketing service.

I too have had several voicemail messages from a female with possibly an indian accent, with a slurred/muffled voice with either the name Ann Daniels or Jan Daniels from Book World wanting me to get back to them about some questions they have linked to my book 'When the Apple of Your Eye is Rotten at the Core' she quotes the number =1 (877) 207-1679 ext 322.

I dont have any connections with book world so googled the company and also the tel number as though it would be a scam, and came across the page relating to numerous individuals getting calls from people reporting to be from Book World but are actually from Book Whirl all with different genders/names and extensions etc....which is obviously a scam.

Unbelievable, Kyle Andrews with Bookwhirl has been calling me every month for about the last 4 months.  I did out of fairness let Kyle know that I had a Major also calling so he said he would call me back in one month to see my progress and always does. I am so grateful for those who have posted. I had him spell the company name it is Bookwhirl, not Book World Publishing.  I'LL JUST SAY BEWARE FOR THE FACT THAT I SEE WAY TOO MANY NAMES AND EXTENSIONS FROM THIS COMPANY. . I'm writing a non fiction that got international attention so I don't any of my manuscript in the wrong hands, BEWARE IF THEY ARE A SCAMMER for all we know, they may put OUR WORK to market overseas somewhere and we never even know, maybe the scammers also steal identity's and collect without us Author's ever having a clue, POSSIBLY TAKING THE STORY AND CHANGING THE BOOK TITLE TO THROW AUTHORS OFF FROM ENGINE SEARCHES WHILE SEARCHING FOR THE TITLE.   LET'S FIND A WAY TO STOP THEM, MAYBE WE CAN GET THE NUMBER TAKEN AWAY SINCE ALLEDGEDLY POSSIBLE FRAUD IS BEING DONE AND MAYBE IT'S A FEDERAL OFFENSE . SCAMMERS ARE ABLE TO CONVINCE PEOPLE TO SEND MANUSCRIPTS VIA THE POSTAL SERVICE WITHIN THE USA OR EVEN FROM THE USA TO ANOTHER COUNTRY, WHAT ABOUT INTERNET LAWS GOVERNING LITERARY WORKS ???? There has to be a way,  Their physical address can be tracked since just about everything is tracked; EXCEPT IF they rent a nice office space with the secretaries, etc. that we see on t.v. now, and take your money and move on, who knows but them.. it's no telling how many new authors have fallen for this GREAT DEAL...GEEZ...

I got the same, but extension 332.  Asian sounding female wanting to ask some questions of me, the author of a book that, on the bad line, didn't sound like any of mine.  She called herself Jan Daniels (I'm sure it wasn't Jack Daniels, but you never know) of 'Book World Publishing'.  The only references I've found to such a company name is one in Bangkok.  There was one that folded in California in about 2011.

Clearly Scammers!

I received a voice message on my cell today saying that they wanted to interview me about my published book on a radio show.
It was difficult to hear the person's name, let alone the company he worked for.
He said his name was Hugh Johnson. Real cute.
I wasn't sure if it was for real, so I googled the number and came up with this site.
Such losers.

A family member of mine, in another state, also received the same type of call (same telephone number as yours, extension 302) left on their answering machine. This person was named David Goodman from Book World Publishing. I followed up with a phone call and left a message for them to call back. When I received this call, I also spoke with a young man who had a heavy Filipino accent, and claimed to be David Goodman. It struck me odd as well. I asked where he had gotten the information about my Children's book, which is already with a publisher. His response was that he got it off the Amazon Books posting, but didn't state where he got my family member's contact information. He then stated that someone from his Senior publishing staff would call me the following day. And he also stated that he would send me more information via email. Thanks to your posting, my skepticism is now confirmed as a potential scam.

I did write a book and the caller from this telephone number, who identified himself as Steve Thompson, said he wanted to talk to me about the book.  Ironically, the book is interviews with people who have lost loved ones and he sounded three-quarters dead himself.  This is the second time this person has left a message on my answering machine but he will never hear back from me.  If he wants to talk to me after he really is dead, maybe, but not before.

Well, the saga continues.  I also got a call with basically the same message as everyone else.  Name sounded like Lois with ext 323 (I think).  I called the number but it was "out of service or there were technical difficulties - try again later".  So, I googled this site and glad I did.  Good luck with all your books, if you wrote one.

I received a call in poorly articulated English by a woman who identified herself as Glenda Daniels of Book Club Publishing. She said that she was calling about one of the books I have published. She referenced the longest string of extensions I have ever heard of: 3328772071679322.  Broken down it looks like area code 322 followed by the 877 number and then again the 322. Area Code 322 is linked to phone scams coming out of Puerto Vallarta. I suspect calling the 877 number and then dialing the supplied number string will transfer you to the Puerto Vallarta connection. Looked suspect so I followed up.

I found no such company and researched the phone number. This is a great reference site! thank you.
This definitely looks like another scam intended to pick the pockets of authors. I will not be calling them back.

Received a voice message from this number last night regarding Book Whirl's interest in marketing my book "Your Doctor is Exposing You", which I recently published. After Googling the number, I also found their website. After a little research, I found some of the testimonies to be from legitimate/published authors on Barnes & Noble and Amazon. Although all of the testimonies regard the quality of work provided (book covers, flyers, etc.) none of them mention any results/sales due to the marketing efforts. On their site, they offer to email 500,000 people for $800. But so what? Anyone can purchase HUGE email lists which are supposedly "opted-in" email addresses, and use them for whatever purpose they want. In most cases, you'll find that none of the addresses truly opted-in for anything. So does pissing off potential buyers with spam email sound like a method that builds the reputation you want?

How did they get my number? Probably from the online yellow pages, since I don't include it on any of my websites. For those receiving phone calls for books they never published, I can only imagine they got your number from an old listing of another author.

Bottom line is that they seem to be a legit company using outdated information to seek self-published authors. But they really MUST get an updated Do Not Call list before making more calls. Oh and fellow authors...best of luck to you all in your quest for sales.  It's a tough market. - Max

I got a call today from this number with a very bad connection and did manage to hear the extension of 332. Called back and got the same information as many of the above callers. They offered me a 6 month advertising deal for $1299 plus a radio spot for $699 (down from $850 supposedly) I was believing it was too good to be true until I started to see all the suspicious comments here after trying to find out who they were. I also thought they were called "bookworld.com" and I only realized it was Bookwhirl after reading the info on this page. They wanted an email address to send me the package information.

Thanks everyone - same story here. I got a voicemail on Friday 20 December 2013 and was asked to call back 877-207-1679, ext. 332. The core of the message was "I would like to aks you some questions about your book entitled Class Action".
Not sure how they got my mobile phone number, to be honest, but thanks to this thread I know it's a scam. And whoever they are, they're still going.

Thanks for this site. I had a voice mail from that number (877-207-01679, x 332), with the woman claiming to be Jen Daniels from BookWhirl.com (sounded more like BookWorld.com the way she said it). It sounded like an Asian girl who was really struggling to get the words out. Not sure how she got my number. I won't be calling back. Interesting to see how many people on this forum have received these calls over quite a stretch of time. They are still at it.

Marcus A Winters called from this number and he sounded so convincing regards marketing my book and we talked a long time. He claimed being an exec of BookWhirl of Greenbay, Wisconsin. After our conversation I checked on him and found out he is not with BookWhirl. He is on Linkin but no profile, no picture. He claimed representing Bookwhirl in the Philippines. He has an Indian accent (from India). I am glad to have seen all these comments about this number - 877-207-1679.

Thank you for the heads-up. I too received an unclear message from someone named Melissa from  "Book World" at 877 207-1679 Ext. 323. I tried calling back and left messages. Upon searching Book World, I was excited and then, of course,  disappointed to learn that this message was from a bogus company. Is it possible to submit a book to the real Book World?

Thanks again.

Received a message on my answering service, claiming interest in my book.  He gave his name as Cal Andrews and an ext no# 335  He claimed to be a Senior Consultant for Book World.  When I called the number back, it never rung--empty air.  And as I was writing this, this person called again, claiming to chose books to 'Market".  I told him that I wasn't interested, and that his number led to nowhere.  I ended the call.

Thanks for this email chain, very helpful. Just received same sketchy vm from Kyle Andrews about my recently published book.  Its sad that these single cell parasites prey on self published writers eager to expand their readership.  Don't bother calling back Kyle, but take heart, with global warming there will be plenty of swampland in Florida to sell...

Got the same call from BookWhirl offering to reprint my book plus publish the 2nd one for $2300.00 and promised me 100% royalty from impending sales. He said they wanted to get the books into the library system as well as to veterans because of its significance about Vietnamese War history. His name was Kyle Andrews and said he was calling from Green Bay, WI, but his accent was Filipino. He wanted me to send him a pdf of my book plus he was ready to send me a contract via E-mail. I told him I wanted to read the contract first before I parted with any money and he said he'd call me back tomorrow. Nice scam, but if it sounds too good to be true, SAVE YOUR TIME AND MONEY!

I have a voicemail from "Melissa" asking me to call her at 877-207-1679 ext 323.  Wants to talk to me about my novel (which she correctly named).  She called my residence number which I never use for my book business....  Said she was with "Socorro" or "Decoro"...not sure of exact name because it was difficult to clearly understand.  Checked that number and found further information on this site.  Glad I checked first!!!
