You should NEVER pay any caller unless they mail proof of debt/proof they can collect.  Per the FDCPA, your caller has only five days to MAIL - do not accept email or fax - a debt validation letter showing that you do owe a debt and that they have the legal right to collect said debt. Refusal to mail this DV letter within five days of their first call is a violation of federal law.

He did the same thing to me. His voice is very threatening. He said they were serving me with papers the next day and in needed to make sure my attorney was here with me. Fishy right there they were taking me to court and I would also have to pay court costs. I am a 63 year old female unable to work. I live off my social security. I gave them my debit card number so they could deduct $500.00 when my check came in. After I thought about it and got chewed out by my daughter I put a stop payment on it. When the put it through they put it under a different nam so my bank wouldn't catch it. They changed the dollar amount . My bank put it through and now pending and they made me dispute it so in about 10 days I may get my money back. These guys are crooks and they know how to manipulate the system.

I just received a call from a john powers but the number is different 212-381-7465  I run a clothing company so I get bombarded by calls from my vendors.  This person says they are calling in 'reference to a claim # XXXXX" but they never mention what company he is calling from.  Just says I'm john powers calling in reference of claim # XXXXX, call me back.  I have been receiving calls from this number for a couple of days now, I do not want to answer as I do not want to encourage him.  Hoping the calls stop.  ANy insight would be appreciated, I cannot find information on that phone number to even trace it back to a company...

I have been receiving calls from "John Powers" from 1-877-500-6998 asking for a Leonard Morris. I keep telling them that there is no one here by that name (which is the truth) and we have had our phone number for almost 9 years.....maybe he had it before us. They keep telling me they will remove this number from their Leonard Morris file but a week or so will go by and they will call again.  Is there anything you can do to stop these people.  They just left another message on my machine and I am going to call them back one last time and I am not going to be pleasant.

I received a call from these guys stating that I took out a loan over 3 years ago in 2009 and never payed it back. First of all I never took out the loan over the Internet and the info they had on me pertained to my new phone number and my new employer which I have had both for over a year. So how did they contact me from having a different phone number and a different job from the so called time of the loan. This is truly a scam. They call you fron a blocked number stating that they will serve you papers at your employment or at your house. These scam are becoming more bold now and people watch yourselves because if you were really being served papers you would not be warned they would  either come in the mail or knock on your door without a notice. Plus you can call the courts and find out if the info is correct. Also these scam artist are on this page resonding to making it seem like these people are actually ok to work with saying you should be more responsible with your bills. Please put an end to these fools and their whacked out scams.

I received a call early this morning from my mother in law stating that my brother in law was left a msg onhis answering machine regarding a so called debt my husband had from a shawn cohen. He stated they were going to serve my husband at his place of employment no later than thursday. Number to call back was 877-423-6008. I did call and you can hear what seems to be several "telemarketers" making calls in the background. I did not speak to anybody. Recieved another call just now sme number but now from a Paul Colvin stating  they are going to serve him at my address tomorrow by5. He claims he is a process server and he tries to act like he is helping you but that you can make it all go away by calling this number. Of course the ppl at the number want money. It is 100% a scam and the person who wrote above is clearly working for him because I guarantee no one came to Ms. Johnstones house and met her. I will verigy with everyone after tomorrow to prove no one came to me. DONT fall for it. Its just like thenigerian scams of same intent but now with clearly american speaking scam artists.
I also got a call last week from something similar. WHen I told the guy to go screw himself he started calling me names. He hasnt showed up yet and its been a week. They always call private. The one who called me game me a number that led to a southwestgroup out of arizona.

Got the same call from Sarah Malloy, with the same rap about coming to the house to serve me with an "intent to collect".  First, you don't get served with papers for "Intent to collect". Her message  never mentions court because it's illegal to threaten someone with legal action in order to get them pay a debt as per the Fair Debt Collections Act.

Also, if they were really suing me, the court sends the papers (not the collection agency) registered mail (at least that is how the do it in my state).

What some shady collection agencies do, is write up a brief that looks like what a lawyer would file to sue you, but it comes via the mail and isn't signed by a lawyer, to give the appearance it's been filed in court.

Plus only a lawyer licensed in your state can file papers to sue you. So if a collection agnecy has an in-house lawyer call you and they are out of state - no matter what they say, they can't file the paper work to sue you.

This happened to us in Texas. I got the same message on my cell on 1/6/2012, but is was from 1-855-282-2603 from a Sara Malloy, stating she was going to serve legal papers to my wife, who was being sued for an outstanding payday loan from CashNet.  I called the phone number left on my cell, which was for Upstate Management Services, and spoke to a lady named Kathy Edwards.  She informed us that we owed almost a thousand dollars for a pay day loan that was taken out over the internet in 2009, and if we didn't pay right now, we would end up in court.  1. We didn't take out a payday loan.  2.  The interest alone from a loan in 2009 would be more than a thousand dollars.  3.  They offered to run a IP address check on our computers to make sure the loan was actually taken out by my wife, which would only cost us $500.  4. The person who kept calling us claiming she was serving papers, said my wife would need two forms of ID on her when she was to be served.  They would most certainly never tell you that you are going to be served, and when they do, they'll know who you are.  And after some research on the internet, the prefix 855 isn't a legitimate number anyway.  If you get a phone call from these clowns, don't lose sleep over it like we did; it's a scam.

Got the same message on my home answering machine from Paul Colvin regarding "pending litigation" and stating he would show up at my house "no later than Friday to serve papers" unless I called back.  Gave call back # 877-423-6008, which I will ignore.  How dumb do they think people are?

Got a restricted call from Paul Covin stating he was going to be serving me with papers. Gave me a phone # of 877-423-6008 to call with a reference #. I don't think it is standard practice to call someone and warn them that they are going to be served, especially if you call from a restricted # and the # you give to call is not listed either. All legitimate business's come up when you google the phone # - this one does not! SCAM!!!

Received a call from Kelly Wagner, at first they stated that they were a legal filing firm and that they were supposedly filing legal docuements from a 2009 CashJar loan that I took out and paid for; they are a debt collection company that misrepresent themselves as a filing firm. I called back spoke to a receptionist cofirmd that they are debt collectors and advised that I was reporting them to the FCC and hung up, Kelly Wagner called me again stating that I was harrassing their company and that I need not to call them again, I stated that I was reporting them to the FCC for not adhering to the Fair Debt Collection Act and she hung up lol. People do not be bullied by these scam artists, they simply are a scam!! Exercise your legal rights and get acquainted with state laws :)

They also mentioned a John Robinson a.k.a. John Powers he is their manager and not an attorney :)

I recieved a call from this Mr powers and was reluctant to call the number listed on the voicemal that was left. I also thought this was another one of those scams that are so often heard about. I then recieved a call a day or two later reminding me that he would be stopping out to have me sign for some type of certified paperwork. I was very surprised that I did in fact end up meeting this guy and he wasn't a bad guy at all, he said he left a few messages but he wanted to make sure i recieved my information. Come to find out it could have all been avoided if I just made a simple phone call a day earlier..
