File complaint with everyone you can. Get their info out there on the internet in forums like this. Inundate them with phone calls, certified mail. Faxes  file with better business bureau, attorney general office, put fraud alert on your credit with transunion,  all debt older than 3 years are subject to statue of limitations. Dint be embarrassed, if you went through a bad patch. Youre not alone
Take action.  Get familiar wib FTC. You still have rights. These companies are either fradulent or breaking the law. It is illegal for them to contact you at work, or threaten you, or harass.  They are hoping hou dont know the law. And most of us maybe did not.

Get free legal help if needed. Like ghe other poster said they have to demonstrate proof that you Re obligaged to pay them. Not just that the debt ks outstanding .  If you do indeed have a past due debt it would be sjth the original lender.  People who buy or steal bad debt do so at their own peril.

Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I and my husband received calls from these people, saying she has a matter on her desk concerning his name and social sercurity number (my husband).  I told my husband dont call her back.  I called her back and told to never call our phones again.  I intend to follow up with the FTC, report to them and see if they can trace this persons location.  I hear they can get YEARS of jail time for screwing around like that.

Hope they read this!

Got an automated call on my work # to call 1-877-211-3248. That it is not a solitication call. Called back on 8/29/12 and spoke with someone named Mike said he is with Vision Asset Mgmt Group and this is about an unpaid internet payday loan for over 3500.00(really, who is going to loan you that much on a payday loan). I told him that I had been a victim of a scam last year and am very cautious and require all/any verif of said debt thru the mail. Claims I got letters on 8/11 & 9/11. I said you are mistaken. He then got even more rude and said if I didn't take care of this I would be prosecuted for check fraud and am I saying I wasn't going to pay because he wanted to record it so he could take it to the judge. I told him I am telling you that I need all validation in writing(he had already validated my address & had last 4 numbers of my social but I wouldn't give more). I then hung up

Prank Call
A very rude "Ms. Jones" called our office demanding to speak with a co worker. My company does b2b sales only and when I asked her if she was calling to inquire regarding a quote she said "No, I have to speak to (name of co-worker). When callers don't want to give any details when they call a business it's usually a sign of an illegitimate call.

Same thing happened to me.  Be sure to ask them for a "proof of debt".  Watch your credit report to make sure someone's not using your ss number to buy things.  EVERYONE: ask them to send you a "proof of debt" from the Original company you owe the money to.  ONLY give them your address to send said "proof of debt".  I asked for one and haven't seen it yet and it was last year when I asked for one.  I still get calls from them and I ask them for the proof of debt every time and I never get one.

Some fool named Mr. Davis just called me and asked me for a "statement" because I called their bluff almost 2 months ago when I had contacted the company I owed a debt to and paid them.  He told me to show proof, I said I had proof and that I didn't need to give it to them because it was paid in full.  He told me that I was dense, slow and didn't understand what was going on.  He also told me that he was going to file a report with the local county prosc office and have me arrested.  Asked me if I had any mean dogs and if I could put them away.  I asked when shall I expect the cops, he said I don't know...over the next two days and I told him great, I'll be waiting.

Received a call from this company at a friends job. I don't know how they got that number, but the message was relayed "she has 48 hrs. to call back or we start the legal process". It was embarassing. These idiots should have the correct numbers before they call. You would think that if it is a valid claim they would have that information!

Got a call also, for cashnet usa. I told him I would pay back half the amount, but they want the money now and I said that is not possible, that it will have to wait until I get paid again. Guess they wont get their money if they wont take what I can give on the day that I can give it.

This call came in, with a message stating 'this is officer brian with the investigations department, your name has come up in an investigation of a complaint thats been filed.  Please call me back at 8882540784.'  'Brian' did have my name, address, etc, but refused to provide a reference number, or anything besides public information (emails, address, etc) to the Cashnetusa account he was calling about.  I did in fact take out one of these loans back in college, but paid it back.  I called Cashnetusa, verified it was paid in full.  I then called this guy back, told him the deal.  He wanted me to send him proof, or else I would be taken to court.  I told him I fulfilled my obligation already, and that any appearance in court would be won by me by simply showing my receipt (which I now have).  He said the calls will keep coming.  I told him that was fine.  Havent heard back since.  Still not sure if it was an honest mistake on their part or a scam.  Either way, it was bogus.
