Is this corporation even legit? They keep saying that that they are going to get me for check fraud. Three months ago, I did take out pay day loan of $200 but I was told by someone that this wasn't legit so I had to close my account. I want to pay it back if it is legit, but I'm afraid that they are not and will take what little money I have in my account. They even called from a restricted number and the 1-877 number said "unavailable." Are debt collectors allowed to do this? And, are they allowed to threaten check fraud and suing my SSN? Help!!

Get these calls from a law firm in Florida because I was accused of shoplifting at WalMart (though it was actually done by the two teenagers I brought with me).  I have a lawyer and am fighting the charges, but these attorneys are ruthless.  Always a recorded message.  Have recorded down the times they call and see that in one day, they called four times.  My lawyer has told me not to give them any money, that they are very aggressive, and they will never take anyone to court all the way in California.  The shoplifted items never left the store, so Walmart wasn't out any money, and the Florida lawyers will continue to harass until they finally give up.  However long that will be, I have no idea.  Rather annoying.

Do Not Call only applies to telemarketers. It does not, however, protect you from people who are (or claim to be) bill collectors. Putting your number on a "Do Not Call" list will not stop them.

That being said, the best thing to do if you do owe is to deal with the company themselves or see if the statue of limitations has expired. If it has, then the best thing to do is don't even answer the phone call or acknowledge the debt. As long as you haven't done that, they can't really get you.

Though they have found a loophole in recent years in that if you answer the phone, even if you aren't the person they are looking for, they can keep a debt open! I recently learned this when a bill collector called for me. Even though I didn't acknowledge that I was the guy they were looking for, by me answering that call, they "made contact", thus can legally keep the debt open. I do notice this really is bad when a debt is about to surpass the statue of limitations.

So definitely be careful. If you don't owe a debt but they insist on harrassing you about it, you may have legal grounds. Make sure you keep records of the debt that is supposidely owed. If you can prove you don't owe, they can't touch you and you may even have grounds to sue them.

Do Not Call, unfortunately, only applies to telemarketers, not bill collectors.

Debt collector.  They call my phone at 8 am and 10 pm, daily.  I am not the person they are asking to talk with.  I don't know the person they are requesting.  Then they threaten that I will be arrested if I don't comply.  Whatever!  Tell my lawyer that and see how far you get.

This time around, same message, only now they are the "Federal Credit Corporation." There is a website, but it has no Google rank. Looks totally bogus to me. Lame computer messaging too.

This could be a legit corporation, and then on the other hand somebody in the Philippines could just be using their real good name.

Our credit is A1.

They called and had my address, SSN and wanted to verify that I was the person because someone was wanting to setup a credit account with this information. I told them I don't discuss that information over the phone and no I won't verify anything. Came on my mothers phone number I don't use... it is her house. I have a cell phone.

This person called me thinking they were calling Laura Smith. Even though I pushed number 2 to report that this was not her phone number the automated system continued to talk as though I hadn't pushed number 2. I would like to be removed from this system. I don't even know a Laura Smith.

The site explains Time Barred Debt, which is debt that has outlasted the statute of limitations.  A collection agency can only ASK you to repay a debt.

I love the line "your not replying to this collection letter, is an acknowledgment of your debt."  I doubt that is truly lawful to claim; it would be equivalent to, NOT being aware of, nor reading a legal statement and also NOT signing any form regarding it.

The new company name claims to be Layfayette Advantage credit corp a collection agency...frightening that the corporation doesn't seem to actually exist, even when Googled.  There is absolutely NO information, no website, no map, non-existent.  Someone's garage scam??

They are addressing me by a name which I haven't used in 12 years.  They cannot pronounce it, have no idea that it is two names that should be hyphenated, so they decided to spell it to my voice mail!  Most amusing.  I had recently been spammed by a website for a gift card entry.  I went to that site and opted out.

To identify web privacy issues in the future, I use a nickname in any online sign-up form, so I know who is selling my info.  I even simply use my initials.

Van Rue Credit Corp... the latest in a long line of loser companies that purchase old debt and harass people over it. HA HA HA! I'm permanently disabled, and you cannot garnish a bank acct that has disability benefits deposited to it. But by all means, keep trying to call, you $9 an hour collectors. Good luck getting anything from me! Bankruptcy is next for me, no biggie. I'll start answering once BK goes thru. Sorry losers, here's my attorney's number, stop calling... and SUCK IT! LMFAO!

Van Rue Collection company keeps calling my home phone number for some guy I've never heard of.   I've called them back twice and it always cycles though their script about how important my call is and on the 3rd time tells me to leave my nam and number and they will call me back. I give them the number and tell them that itGarr's phone and I don't know him and not to call me again.  I'm on the do not call lists for the U.S. and Texas. The lists aren't working!!!!!!!!

My mother kept getting calls from this company for me.  I called them back and of course got the "please hold for the next avail. representitive".  "Alex" came on the line.  I told him at the very start of the converstation that I was in no way acknowledging the debt.  I was calling to tell him that he is no longer alowed to call the phone number.  Once he realized he was not going to get anywhere with me, he got defensive like I was taking money out of my pocket.  Upon later review, I realized that even if this was my debt, statue of limitatitions is either already passed or is about to very soon.  I then stated again, he was no longer allowed to call my mother, and that if he did so again, I would be filing harassment charges.  Then stated again, I was not acknowledging the debt.  He continued to try and keep me on the line in order to get me to say anything about it being mine.  I hung up.  Oddly enough, I did give him a phone number he could contact me on, but hasn't called right back.

Just a warning to others, learn your statues for your state, learn your rights, don't let them bully you into acknowlding anything.  WE ARE NOT DEFENSELESS AGAINST THESE PEOPLE.

I have no debts; owe no one any money...These calls are a menace to all.  There must be something to be done about this.  DO NOT CALL is not holding back any of these...What' good is it if it's not doing anything but letting calls thru.  Why dosen't the gov't do something about this; instead of taking away everyone's money????? or are they the ones DOING IT?????
