The American Diabetes Association is NOT a particularly esteemed charity (see charitynavigator.org on the web wherein they are awarded 1 star out of a potential 4 stars for excellence or lack therof).

Back in the early portion of 2011, we began experiencing phone calls looking for money from this operation (charity might be stretching things a little). At that time, they were using six phone numbers containing geographic area codes and all of them were Virginia or Maryland numbers. Of course, who knows whom they had hired to make the phone calls or what actual phone numbers those calls were coming from after they spoofed these six numbers using geographic area codes onto the Caller ID. You could dial any one of these (spoofed) numbers and listen to a polite recorded message indicating they would call you again (perhaps from InfoCision in Akron). Those numbers all showed ADA along with each number (as shown below) in the Caller ID:
240-210-7102
571-261-0106
410-202-0108
703-291-9032
434-878-9983
301-223-0109

At about September of 2011, ADA decided they needed to get a little sneakyness in to get you to pick up their phone calls by rotating 877 numbers with TOLL FREE CALL in the Caller ID. The numbers were (and, I assume, still are):
877-251-2901
877-255-1077
877-262-9431
877-269-4965

We acquired a Digitone call blocker device (easy to find by that brand name on the web, relatively easy to install and use and about $100 for peace on your phone line). That should explain why we have not seen any of the 10 phone numbers of the two types listed above since that time.

The 877-240-6044 ADA number came to us on 9/27/2012 with the name of ANONYMOUS rather than TOLL FREE CALL in the Caller ID. The 877-232-4020 number came to us similarly on 9/28/2012. We will likely not see either of these numbers again as I have just added both to the list of blocked numbers on the Digitone. Those who wish to spare themselves this kind of "charity" B.S. may want to investigate this device. It will block up to 80 of the numbers that appear on your Caller ID and never ring your phone ? not even a first ring, as it is suppressed while the Digitone analyzes the number shown on the Caller ID. Note that wildcards may be used ? you may enter 877-###-#### and block all calls beginning with area code 877 and thus use only one of the available 80 simple number blocks. Do you have some callers you want to receive calls from beginning with 877? You may also use one of your 80 simple blocks by entering 877-2##-####, thus blocking any caller using numbers beginning with 877-2 rather than just 877 (note that all 6 of the ADA 877 numbers I have seen so far begin with 877-2). There are also other options in addition to the 80 simple blocks. For example, the Digitone is set by default (which you can change) to block any caller whose name appears on the Caller ID as ANONYMOUS.

No, the governments are NOT about to help in the near future. And, if they did, it might well cost each of us a good bit more than a one-time $100 expense.

Otherwise, find a way to put up with having to refuse to answer these calls when these bums ring your phone ? or ? drop your landline and try buying a cellular smart phone and purchasing and installing an "app" to block these junk calls from ringing your new cell phone. If you do the latter, make sure the model of smart phone you select has an appropriate app available before you sign that contract!

ADA panhandling the public again. Not a good charity, I wouldn't donate a penny to them.

Have called 7 times since July 10th! ADA uses so many numbers there's no way to block them all!
