I got the same message as everyone else but from a different number 877-233-4972. Fortunately I stopped my husband before he so trustingly gave out our credit card info.  I checked on snopes.com which reports urban legends, and it is a scam.  No free gift vouchers.

I just received a similar text. They're probably using a random number generator, so it isn't GamesStop's fault for selling/releasing numbers or the result of a compromise of any kind.

Hi ______,
Thx 4 visiting our site
Call 877-232-5161 to claim
your FREE $200 Walmart Gift
Voucher!

Of course this is a scam. Once they get your credit card number they continue to charge membership fess to various accounts you agreed to join by accepting the terms of the transaction.

They get your number by using a random number dialer that generates known phone number configurations until it gets a live one. Once you return call or text they know it is good number so they then add it to their database, giving you even more solicitations.

If you have given a group like this your debit or credit card number, you should close the account immediately, alert your bank or credit card company to the possibility of more transactions, and work with them to recover any loss.

My advice, delete these unknown, unsolicited texts and calls without opening them - that way you don't cofirm the number for them.

Also, do not use the call this number to opt out feature...yes, you opted out af one call, but they add you to a dozen other lists.

Good Luck!

Hi, I just got the same message as well. Although being in law enforcement I played along with the telemarketer on the other end of the line. I called three different times and got three different company names from them with different one time fee's and so forth. Of course I told them each time the call was recorded and I was forwarding it onto the fed's. I also told them I would continue to do that as long as they were stupid enough to verbally run the scam while being recorded.

I received the same message today.. I have never been to gamestop nor have I ever downloaded anything from verizon. They get your  cell numbers by first knowing your area code and prefix... in my area, the area code is 951, and the prefix is 532.... anyone can find out that (951) 532- is all cell phones from 0000 to 9999 (cell phone companies (own) the entire prefix, in my case   532  Now all the scammers need to do is have an automated text message sending program on their computer to send a message to everyone in your area code and prefix starting with 0000 to 9999, then they sit back and wait to see who responds. Counting on greed to get you to pick up the phone and call them. Best thing to do... ignore the message. Let them wonder if anyone actually has your phone number.

I got the same text today.  I have T-Mobile and have not downloaded any apps or given this number to any on-line businesses.  I am not even going to text back to stop, because I don't think that that will do any good, and may even end up getting more texts or start getting phone calles from them! Should be a way to report this but so far there isn't.

I also recieved a text message on my phone today.  I think the answer might be:  did you download any free apps through verizon on your cell phone? i.e.  bing app, disney free app, social network?, and there is one other but I can't remember right now.

I downloaded these apps last night pretty late in the evening.  I also deleted these apps late this afternoon. I recieved the text four or five hours later.  I don't know if this is random or connected to my activities.  Do these actions apply to anyone else?
