Consumers across the country report that they're getting telephone calls from people trying to collect on loans the consumers never received or on loans they did receive but for amounts they do not owe. Others are receiving calls from people seeking to recover on loans consumers received but where the creditors never authorized the callers to collect for them. So what's the story?

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>

I received a voice mail from a woman named Audrey last night for my son stating they have received court documents and wanted him to call them back. The caller ID showed a private number. She then said, if she doesn't hear from him they expect to see him in court on 22 Oct. They called back again and gave a diffrent court date of 19 October which is today. They said if there was any questions, the callback number was 877-275-5639. My wife said she received a call from that same number, only they called and said her computer was infected. They also called my other son and left a message for his brother. After I googled the number,that told me this was definitely a scam.

Thank goodness people are reporting this. It helps greatly because my son was about to call them and give them all his personal information. Is there someone I can call to report them to?

They have called me twice.  They have contacted my father and my inlaws stating the have documetns for me to sign.  I called them last night abnd told them that they are a scam and not to contact me again.  They called me today and my mother in alw.  I called them back again and asked to see what documents they had they told it was a paid day loan that was done in 2008 into account at NCB.  I told them that I had not had an account at NCB from Dec 2006.  Back in June the same person called me stating that I took a loan with the same company back in Dec 2007.  I told the guy that I want his name number and comaony name.  he asked me why I wanted it.  I told him that this was a scam and that I am going to report them to the IL Atty. Generals office and the FTC he siad I will take care of theis matter right now and you will not hear from us again. On a side note the lady that called left her name as Aduery but when I called the number to speak with the company she answered as Ryan she then passed me off to the General Manger whichg his name was Ryan as well.That is after I pointed out to her that hey you left a message and gave me a different name.  They were rude and I checked the company out and they are on the list as scam artist.  They told me that tthey filed courts papers to take me to small claims in the county I live in I called and checked and there is nothing in there at all plus I would blowen them out of the water with the proof I have showing I was on military duty and I did not have an account at National City or the correct employer.  If they call you report them right away.  The guy did metion to me that they pay big money for others personal information to othe compnaies.

They just gave me a name of a person not of the company.  I got a call from them as well stating they have someone coming over  to give me notice to be in court and that they have been trying to find me for and give me over a month to give me this notice.  I asked them what county they went to and they told me the county I live in.  I looked it up on the website and there is nothing under my married name or my madien name.  They told me that I did a pay day loan back on 4-5-2008 into am account that I closed two years before that and that I took the money out and never repaid it.  I told the guy that he was lieing and that he is messing with the federal government and he asked me for my badge number I told him that he will be hearing from the ATT, Genral's Office of IL because I have more doucments to prove him wrong for him to prove that I took the pay day loan out.  I was at mob sation with no internet access at the time he was stating.  When they called me I june from another number they told me the same thing but they told me i took it out in Dec 2007 and into the same bank account.  This is a scam and I have reported them to the FDC and to the Atty., Generals office!  The scary part is that they had my social Alos they never said this is call to collect a debt any information can be used they answered hello that was it.  They called my husbands number and when I answered they hung up on me so that right there tells you that this is a scam
