I worked for ITA for almost a year and loved it, it was our job to call, we didn't do it on free will. Being called a low-life gets to you. We were just trying to make an honest living like everyone else. We don't force the money out of you. Why do you even have a house phone if you don't want people calling it? It's not a group of "scammers" it's a well-rounded business intending on helping our law inforcement made up of hard-working Americans like you and I. Please take the time to reconsider your words. No harm done, it's all over with now.

Been getting calls from this organization for months now - seems almost weekly - the wife usually tells them no - today I answered and got the hello hello hello - I finally said WHAT DO YOU WANT?

I got the spill and said I would never donate anything over the phone to an unverified entity - he said thats fine we can mail you the forms.   If I get the forms and verify that they are in fact supporting the Indiana Troopers I will donate - if I cant verify it I will pursue charges against the scammers

I've received calls from 800-784-0119, 877-286-0028, 888-816-0054, 800-416-0058 and 866-856-0111.

I've spoken with a friend of mine on the IMPD.

Apparently, organizations like the "State Troopers Association" and the "Police Protection Association" are loosely affiliated with any real police organizations...and that's "loosely", at best.

My recommendation is that if you really do want to contribute, try PAL (Police Athletic League), the PBA or the FOP.

They call residents of Indiana from a shabby office in Fairmont, WV. It is a bunch of obese, dirty, old men who sit there and sceam "HELLO, HELLO, HELLO" in the phone all day. When they get someone to "donate" they all scream and clap for one another. They are not former Indiana troopers by any stretch of the imagination. They work Monday through Saturday, 3 shifts a day. I heard they only hire men because it sounds more believable. I'm not sure if it's a scam, but it's definitely a shady business.

I received a call from
Trooper Teddy Support Program
Accounting OFFICE
p.o. bOX 1203
Indianapolis, IN 46206

I was told that the donation would go to support the teddy bear program where in police officers give these bears to children who have been removed from their homes due to domestice violence, or a burned home, so they can give these to kids? What are youto believe.

Non-profit Organization
Carmel, Indiana
I have received over fifty calls from 866-298-4454 these past few months, some as early as 8:01 a.m. on a Sunday morning and some as late as 8:59 p.m. on a weeknight. I have followed online discussions forums for some time now regarding such scams and am wondering if anyone has tried a different tactic?

First, apologize for being at home and for being so busy (sarcasm); then ask for the calling individuals full name, home address and home telephone number so that you can contact them that evening after 11 p.m. in order to discuss donating.

If unsuccessful, pledge to give $20,000 and that you will send a cashiers check when you receive a certified, notarized copy of their Indiana Business License.

-Personal-

I have no problem donating to worthwhile causes, but I search out my own non-profit entities and contact them directly. Furthermore, I will not donate to any such charity where the money leaves my immediate area. Why should I give money to support the homeless half a world away when there are plenty of homeless people within five miles of me who need food and clothing. Furthermore, there are already local organizations addressing these issues? This may sound heartless, or is it? That is why State Governments and our Federal Government have such assistance programs, which already use your 'tax money'. They fund programs around the world: programs like UNICEF, Red Cross, etc. You help the homeless, impoverished, needy, abused, neglected around the world through our government each and every day. And it isn't cheap. Yet our country continues to be a leader in international aide even amidst all the criticism.  In addition, I will not donate to any non-profit who gives less than 75% of every dollar received to their respective causes. All non-profits file such yearly statements and can be viewed by contacting both your respective State Treasury Department and the IRS. The information is available to the public by mandate of Federal Law. Exercise your right to such information. Yes, you already pay for these departments, again, via your tax dollars.

Finally, if you really want to help an Indiana State Trooper individual or family who has hit hard times, contact the association and inquire about a specific family. Get their contact information and send a check directly to the family....or a gift card, etc. If their contact information is confidential, send a money order or check made out specifically to that individual/family....then check to make sure it was properly used. Be proactive, not reactive.

Try visiting your local Police Station and Fire Station every Christmas. Bring a basket of Snacks and don't skimp on the expense. I've been doing this for years and believe me, each year when I walk in they know my name and they KNOW where I live. While there I get to know those individuals who cover my area, which is not that hard to do. If I ever have a fire or need police assistance, I can guarantee that upon receiving the 911 call, either department WILL recognize my name and address and will make an extra effort to help me....GUARANTEE IT! Ergo, make it PERSONAL.
These people make great sacrifices every time they go to work, because on average, they love what they do. They sure as heck don't do it for the pay or the benefits and in addition, are active members of your community. So, make an effort to know them. It might someday save your home or more importantly, your life.

-Personal End-

Telemarketers: Or just say, "Sorry, can you hold for a minute while I use the restroom?" --- Then, put the phone down and leave it be until they hang up. Keep doing this indefinitely every time you answer. Even non-profits have to pay long distance charges. Make it cost-ineffective to keep calling you.
My personal record is 23 minutes. I mean, what kind of idiot waits for you for 23 minutes?

-OR-

Speak jibberish when answering the phone.... just make stuff up..... sound incoherent. Do not use pig latin or Klingonese, you might run into someone fluent. Basically, nobody likes speaking with an idiot.

If you speak Mandarin, do so. I doubt they have anyone there who can speak such a rare dialect. If they do, ask if they know your family back in the old country and start talking politics. Nobody enjoys a political discussion with a complete stranger.

Tell them you'd be happy to donate, but all your psycho-tropic medications are costing you a fortune. Be prepared to give specific medication references like, Prozac, Lithium/Lithinate, and organic St. John's Wart, just to top it off. Sound 'wired' and 'on the edge'.

Answer each time with a different name.... Introduce them to your multiple personality disorder! Be creative with your multi-personalities.... if you're caucasian, make sure one of them is 'Muhammad al-?'; if you are African American, make sure one of them is 'Thurston or Buffy'.... make it fun! Oh, don't forget to play your role. A Thurston or Buffy should sound stuffy, pretentious and use words that would make a Scrabble Player proud.

If you don't have a personal answering/voicemail recording that would identify your voice as 'you', try answering with something witty, like "Thank you for calling Domino's Pizza, (your town), can I please have your telephone number and will this be for pick up or delivery?" Know Donato's local number and address. Make them think they keep dialing the wrong number. And be consistent! Drives them nuts! :=)

Remember, you can't fight these jerks. Pissing them off will only make them more persistent in harassing you. Unless you can afford to fly to VA and visit their home office with a Restraining Order, you're just going to have to deal with these jerks. Might as well have a little fun.

Basically, just screw with them without losing your temper. Make them want to not deal with you without
desiring to harass you.
Make them think you are not worthwhile.
Make them 'Black List' you..... yes, all Telemarketing Firms keep Black Lists..... for screwballs like you!
Be one..
Have Fun
Happy Holidays

Well, finally... They have declared bankruptcy.  The legal papers in teh case disclose they took in nearly $3 million last year and provided $250,000 in benefits.

That, folks is well over 90% of their fundraising going in their OWN pocket.  Yes, Virginia, this IS a scam.

It doesn't mean they will stop, only their current organization is busted.   Watch for them to reincarnate.  Watch, and be wary.

Yes, the Indiana Troopers Association is a scam! I worked for them from 2006 until 2008 in Fairmont West Virginia. If it is a 'non profit organization' how can they pay their telemarketers anywhere from $7 to $13.50 an hour? F*** the ITA!

acatnamedtoad, adl;  Just trying to figure out how this worthy cause calls people at 9:03 on Saturday morning.  I cannot believe that anyone calling from 866-298-4454 is in any way interested in the welfare of Indiana Troopers.  I cannot see the relevance of your personal experience to solicitation calls that subtract genuine donations.  Stay on point or stay off the board.
