This number was on a letter I got in the mail saying that my terms were changing.  It turned out to be my Zales Credit Card.  I spoke with a rep and she stated that they provide the credit for a ton of companies like Goodwrench, Zales, and lots others.

I called this today and they claimed it was for a health card that I purchased back in February 2010. I never purchased any health credit cards and don't even have health insurance. They were very suspicious when I started asking questions. When I questioned the operator she said it could be used for vet bills, health bills, dental, ect. But it was not a normal credit card for purchasing other goods. They new my SSN, address, phone and name. This is a complete identity scam. Please report it as soon as you get this letter!

Got the same letter addressed to my wife.  Checked her cards and it is from The Children's Place.  Issued by Citi.  Bottom line is it seems to be legitimate.

I received the same letter from Address:  P.O Box 653037, Dallas Texas. 75265-3037.  I have never had a Citibank (South Dakota) Card ending in XXXX. I have written letters to the PO Box returning their letter asking for clarification but never heard back. This time I am making copies and writing letters and mailing them certified delivery with proof of delivery.  You cannot trust the banks anymore, cover yourself through correspondence.  When I call, I always get a busy signal.  I am reporting this vague correspondence to the Consumer Response Center -- FCRA - Federal Trade Commission - Washington, D.C. 20580.

I called the # on the letter and first got a message saying that it was related to children's place, gordon's, goodyear, etc and then it connected me right away with a nice lady who asked me for the last 4 digits of the account that appeared on the letter (she couldn't find anything), then she asked me for the first 5 digits of the code shown at the bottom of the letter and thats when she told me that it was about my Children's place account and told me that the Annual % rate was increasing....I hope this helps.

I received the letter yesterday.  I called Citibankj and they said that I did not have any credit card with them.  Then, they told me to check my credit report with a company in the internet.  I received a Gordon's Credit Card a few months ago and I destroyed it.  The question is: why I'm receiving this information about a card that is not in use anymore? and why waste a large amount of money in postage & envelopes/paper for something that is dead?  I may say that they are phishing & looking for a victim.  If it was the real company (they would say there name) it would have been more transparent. I received mine in Spanish.

Received the same kind of mail today.....but my call-back number ended in 1985 instead of 1984.  The 'effective date' of the increased rate was LAST JANUARY. Strange! Talk about snail mail!  I don't own this credit card...After reading all these messages below, I don't think I'll call.  I don't want to provide them with my telephone number - they already have my name and address.

By phoning them (which I was also going to do until I read these messages) provides them with your telephone number.  They already have your name and address.  I guess I'll just turn it in to the postmaster.

You should also notify the Postmaster General.  If phishing, then it is a federal offense using the mail system.

totally thought this was a scam at first too- especially after calling their 1877 305-1984 number that no one answeres... but after reading the posts here I dug out a Children's Place credit card I opened last year and used once and forgot about and realized the letter referenced the same last four numbers. What is a scam is whoever came up with this lame letter that is meant to look fishy so people toss it and don't realize their interest rate is going to increase to 30%! I am cancelling my card and telling the Children's Place I'm not goinig to shop there at all.

I was thinking the same thing that this is a scam. but in the end after reading some of this. I remembered about my Gordons card.

so everybody... i think you should try to recall if you have a staples, radio shack, zales, gordons or any of those retailers card. cos that might solve your case.

I called several CitiBank numbers... all of them did not know who I was.  I finally, out of curiosity, called the 877-305-1984 number and got a nice long recorded message explaining that the account could be in relation to many different retailers.

After holding a short while I was able to speak to a warm body and the guy asked for a code from the lower right corner of the letter and was able to tell me who the retailer is.  After he told me the name of a place I know I have an account with I knew the letter was legit.

Bottom Line:  This is NOT a scam, however I do agree with others on this thread:  The letter was very poorly executed and had several scam "red flags" in it.

I got this letter too and the number doesn't even work. It seems to be out of order. I keep records of my card numbers and can't find this one listed in my file, so I suspect like so may others here that is one I closed. But what is infuriating is that now there is no way to call them to find out.

I got the same thing today and all the alarms went off as well.  After digging through old account info (never throw away old card numbers and who they go to) I discovered that it was in fact Zales.  The weird thing is I closed that account almost a year ago.  Time to call Zales tomorrow and ask why it is still open or see if Citibank doesn't know its azz from its elbow about what accounts are active.  And the banks wonder why they are in trouble????

I received the same mailer. It LOOKS like a phishing scheme. It was very poor judgment on the part of CitiBank to not give further info to consumers about the specific cards these letters were sent out. It should not have been that difficult to include the company for which the card is associated--they were able to include the last four digits of the account number, after all.

The biggest reason that this LOOKS like a phishing scheme is that it does not include the full account number. The misspelling of the name does not help, either. They did not prove to me that they are who they say they are, and I will thus not communicate with them regarding this matter.

Assuming this is legit, however, the thing that bothers me the most is that the mailer I received was (I believe) for a Circuit City card that I closed months ago. I do not like it that they seem to think the account is still open (why else would I receive the mailer?). And because the letter LOOKS so much like a phishing attempt, I don't want to contact them about it. I don't remember the full credit card number because I cut up the card after I closed the account. (I could probably find the number if I dig through records, if I was really worried that much.) I have a zero balance on the card and will never use it again, so the "new terms" aren't going to affect me. I still don't like it that they think my account is still open--if the mailer *really* is from CitiBank.

Anyone link this to a Verizon $50 rebate card yet?  That is my only connection that I can think of since it says "citi" on it.  The acct. number(card #) is different.

After totally freaking out about identity theft, and calling Citibank, they couldn't find such an account. I was prepared to call my state's attorney general's fraud hotline. Then I remembered my paid-off Gordon's card! What a panic for nothing - except that I'll be sure to give them NO MORE BUSINESS!!!

Got a letter in the mail.  Thought it was phishing.  Got to digging around in my files and found the card.  Turned out to be Goodyear.  Luckily, I have a zero balance with them.

Credit card companies are working themselves right out of business with this nonsense.  Goodbye to them for good.

Ditto here. I had to do some research but discovered that it was a Goodyear credit card that I took out in order to get a fat discount on a set of tires. I had since paid it off and destroyed the card and that's why I didn't remember the card number. Citibank says I don't have a card, even though Goodyear runs their credit through Citibank. I call the tire company and they had the card number on file with Goodyear phone number, so I called and got it straight: no balance but couldn't cancel the card until office opens on Monday. If anyone has done a similar thing, check your receipts and call the company who opened the card for your purchase. You should be able to get all the info you need to see what the problem is.

I just got said letter in the mail, and was alarmed like everyone else because the letter didn't say a specific company, but specified an account number. I called the number to see if this was legit, but it was closed today, and it still doesn't say any company name with the number.

I decided to google it, and luckily found this site. Mine is a Zales card, too.

Hi. I received this letter too.
The sender address was
"P.O.Box 653037
Dallas, TX, 75265-3037"

I called Citibank and they said that never had an account under my name.
I think it's a fraud,
since in letter there is an 877-305-1984 number which never answers and letter asks to send your complete personal data to them to the above address.
Be careful and stay away from.

I just received this letter today.  I too thought it was some sort of scam for identity theft.  I googled the number listed ( Gawd I love the interweb) and found this dandy listing.  Read a bit.  Saw the citibank reference and realized it was for my NTB card.  I guess I should keep better track of "credit" cards with my name on them. :P  Maybe I should just get rid of a few that I don't use anyway or better yet, cards like this should be referenced as to what they're for NOT for what institution the credit comes from.  We lay folk need all the help we can get.  :D

Anyway...This is no scam.  It's just a notice of change in terms for those cards that we all tend to forget we have.  Relax.

i thought for sure that this was a trick. i only own 3 credit cards, one of which i cancelled the day before receiving this letter in the mail. i waited on the phone for over 10 minute but reps were still busy. and the letter doesn't include enough information about the company. it looks extremely fishy. but come to find out, after looking at my 3 different accounts, the four numbers in the letter match my cancelled account for The Childrens Place and on the back of my statement, in small letters at the bottom it says Citibank.
