This phone number was left on my answering machine as a call back.  Other than them telling me it was urgent to get back to them, they left no other information.  The original number they called me on was 7579415700.  Look up that number on this site & you will see that it is a scam company trying to get information from people to steal their identities.  DO NOT give ANY information to these people.  Please look up the other number to read what other concerned people have left for comments.

Received the same call with threats about the 1099c filing. I said I had been thru that before and dealt with the IRS on my own. She said "good luck with the IRS" and hung up on me.

Search the net for "form 1099-c insolvency ". There are instructions on how to file for insolvency. That will eliminate the need to count the canceled debt as income.

Debt Collector
I received 2 messages on my answering machine about an important matter regarding my sister. I returned the call and they would not provide me any information "because it is against the law". I told them I would not provide them any information either and the lady rudely said fine and hung up on me. I called back and asked what CRA stood for and the lady (named Michelle and purported manager) and she said collection recovery something or the other. I said if she provided me the name of their general manager, an address and phone number, then I would gladly pass this information on to my sister. She told me the manager's name was Mr. Cagle (or Cagel). I asked for his first name and she said "which one? There are three of them." (All brothers). I asked to speak to one of them and was placed on hold. When I started asking him questions he said the call was over and he hung up.

I have just recieved a phone call from these people. They demanded that they needed to speak to my sister inlaw and she was not present at the time. As being her power of attorney they still did not give me any information. I asked the lady who's name was ( Sara Kitchen ) asked me to be placed on hold. The whole phone call was fishy. She wanted information but when I asked her information she said she was not able to give any information at the time. She hung up on me after I was on hold and so I got on the computer and looked up the phone number and found this site. Thank god that I was able to know the information about the so called "CRA" company before I called back. I ended up calling back and spoke to a man who was very rude. I didn't even have to say any information about what the call was about from Sara Kitchen, he knew everything already. I demanded to know the company's information and he told me he was not able to let me know any of that information. To my knowledge that any information regardless if they are a bill collector etc, they still have to give you information about the company. Thank you for this website because if not I probably would have been fooled and gave information that could have later got me in trouble.

1-866-857-3916 is one of those irritating numbers that show up on your caller ID that can never seem to be identified.   When you return the call, you get the ominous "Can I help you?" or "Case number please."  They refuse to identify who they are when questioned, will not state they are debt collectors, and by tone imply you have committed some illegal act and are in great trouble or they would not have called you.  It is a violation of FDCPA.  It took quite a bit of research and cunning to discover whom the voices were behind the lawbreaking 866 number were...but it's coming together now and they are without excuse.

Give us your stories on CRA and let's put together some useful information to bring these folks down.  Record their calls where legal and save the tapes for future use.  We'll post 'em here if you have something of interest.

In the meantime, hold them to the law; make them put everything in writing, validate the debt.  Use the cease-communication letter.  Violations of the law should be pointed out to the Virginia Attorney General.

CAUTION: I recommend you NEVER disclose your bank account or credit card information to a debt collector, as you risk them emptying your account, or maxing out your credit card. If you feel they are reporting on your credit bureau files in error or need assistance in dealing with them, email  the details w/your location.  Assistance and referral to a consumer legal specialist may be available.

From Federal Trade Commission Website ? FAIR DEBT COLLECTION PRACTICES ACT
Debt Collection FAQs: A Guide for Consumers
If you?re behind in paying your bills, or a creditor?s records mistakenly make it appear that you are, a debt collector may be contacting you.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation?s consumer protection agency, enforces the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), which prohibits debt collectors from using abusive, unfair, or deceptive practices to collect from you.
Under the FDCPA, a debt collector is someone who regularly collects debts owed to others. This includes collection agencies, lawyers who collect debts on a regular basis, and companies that buy delinquent debts and then try to collect them.
Here are some questions and answers about your rights under the Act.

What types of debts are covered?
The Act covers personal, family, and household debts, including money you owe on a personal credit card account, an auto loan, a medical bill, and your mortgage. The FDCPA doesn?t cover debts you incurred to run a business.

Can a debt collector contact me any time or any place?
No. A debt collector may not contact you at inconvenient times or places, such as before 8 in the morning or after 9 at night, unless you agree to it. And collectors may not contact you at work if they?re told (orally or in writing) that you?re not allowed to get calls there.

How can I stop a debt collector from contacting me?
If a collector contacts you about a debt, you may want to talk to them at least once to see if you can resolve the matter ? even if you don?t think you owe the debt, can?t repay it immediately, or think that the collector is contacting you by mistake. If you decide after contacting the debt collector that you don?t want the collector to contact you again, tell the collector ? in writing ? to stop contacting you. Here?s how to do that:
Make a copy of your letter. Send the original by certified mail, and pay for a ?return receipt? so you?ll be able to document what the collector received. Once the collector receives your letter, they may not contact you again, with two exceptions: a collector can contact you to tell you there will be no further contact or to let you know that they or the creditor intend to take a specific action, like filing a lawsuit. Sending such a letter to a debt collector you owe money to does not get rid of the debt, but it should stop the contact. The creditor or the debt collector still can sue you to collect the debt.

Can a debt collector contact anyone else about my debt?
If an attorney is representing you about the debt, the debt collector must contact the attorney, rather than you. If you don?t have an attorney, a collector may contact other people ? but only to find out your address, your home phone number, and where you work. Collectors usually are prohibited from contacting third parties more than once. Other than to obtain this location information about you, a debt collector generally is not permitted to discuss your debt with anyone other than you, your spouse, or your attorney.

What does the debt collector have to tell me about the debt?
Every collector must send you a written ?validation notice? telling you how much money you owe within five days after they first contact you. This notice also must include the name of the creditor to whom you owe the money, and how to proceed if you don?t think you owe the money.

Can a debt collector keep contacting me if I don?t think I owe any money?
If you send the debt collector a letter stating that you don?t owe any or all of the money, or asking for verification of the debt, that collector must stop contacting you. You have to send that letter within 30 days after you receive the validation notice. But a collector can begin contacting you again if it sends you written verification of the debt, like a copy of a bill for the amount you owe.

What practices are off limits for debt collectors?
Harassment. Debt collectors may not harass, oppress, or abuse you or any third parties they contact. For example, they may not:
    use threats of violence or harm;
    publish a list of names of people who refuse to pay their debts (but they can give this information to the credit reporting companies);
    use obscene or profane language; or
    repeatedly use the phone to annoy someone.

False statements. Debt collectors may not lie when they are trying to collect a debt. For example, they may not:
    falsely claim that they are attorneys or government representatives;
    falsely claim that you have committed a crime;
    falsely represent that they operate or work for a credit reporting company;
    misrepresent the amount you owe;
    indicate that papers they send you are legal forms if they aren?t; or
    indicate that papers they send to you aren?t legal forms if they are.

Debt collectors also are prohibited from saying that:
    you will be arrested if you don?t pay your debt;
    they?ll seize, garnish, attach, or sell your property or wages unless they are permitted by law to take the action and intend to do so; or
    legal action will be taken against you, if doing so would be illegal or if they don?t intend to take the action.

Debt collectors may not:
    give false credit information about you to anyone, including a credit reporting company;
    send you anything that looks like an official document from a court or government agency if it isn?t; or
    use a false company name.

Unfair practices. Debt collectors may not engage in unfair practices when they try to collect a debt. For example, they may not:
    try to collect any interest, fee, or other charge on top of the amount you owe unless the contract that created your debt ? or your state law ? allows the charge;
    deposit a post-dated check early;
    take or threaten to take your property unless it can be done legally; or
    contact you by postcard.

Can I control which debts my payments apply to?
Yes. If a debt collector is trying to collect more than one debt from you, the collector must apply any payment you make to the debt you select. Equally important, a debt collector may not apply a payment to a debt you don?t think you owe.

Can a debt collector garnish my bank account or my wages?
If you don?t pay a debt, a creditor or its debt collector generally can sue you to collect. If they win, the court will enter a judgment against you. The judgment states the amount of money you owe, and allows the creditor or collector to get a garnishment order against you, directing a third party, like your bank, to turn over funds from your account to pay the debt.
Wage garnishment happens when your employer withholds part of your compensation to pay your debts. Your wages usually can be garnished only as the result of a court order. Don?t ignore a lawsuit summons. If you do, you lose the opportunity to fight a wage garnishment.

Can federal benefits be garnished?
Many federal benefits are exempt from garnishment, including:
    Social Security Benefits
    Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Benefits
    Veterans? Benefits
    Civil Service and Federal Retirement and Disability Benefits
    Service Members? Pay
    Military Annuities and Survivors? Benefits
    Student Assistance
    Railroad Retirement Benefits
    Merchant Seamen Wages
    Longshoremen?s and Harbor Workers? Death and Disability Benefits
    Foreign Service Retirement and Disability Benefits
    Compensation for Injury, Death, or Detention of Employees of U.S. Contractors Outside the U.S.
    Federal Emergency Management Agency Federal Disaster Assistance
But federal benefits may be garnished under certain circumstances, including to pay delinquent taxes, alimony, child support, or student loans.

Do I have any recourse if I think a debt collector has violated the law?
You have the right to sue a collector in a state or federal court within one year from the date the law was violated. If you win, the judge can require the collector to pay you for any damages you can prove you suffered because of the illegal collection practices, like lost wages and medical bills. The judge can require the debt collector to pay you up to $1,000, even if you can?t prove that you suffered actual damages. You also can be reimbursed for your attorney?s fees and court costs. A group of people also may sue a debt collector as part of a class action lawsuit and recover money for damages up to $500,000, or one percent of the collector?s net worth, whichever amount is lower. Even if a debt collector violates the FDCPA in trying to collect a debt, the debt does not go away if you owe it.

What should I do if a debt collector sues me?
If a debt collector files a lawsuit against you to collect a debt, respond to the lawsuit, either personally or through your lawyer, by the date specified in the court papers to preserve your rights.

Where do I report a debt collector for an alleged violation?
Report any problems you have with a debt collector to your state Attorney General?s office (www.naag.org) and the Federal Trade Commission (www.ftc.gov). Many states have their own debt collection laws that are different from the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. Your Attorney General?s office can help you determine your rights under your state?s law.

I received an urgent sounding message from this number saying to "contact us immediately so that someone can represent you".  When i called back from another phone, after blocking the number using *67, they still knew the person's name of the phone i was using.  I told them i was calling from a different phone and just wanted to know what CRA stands for, and the lady gave me an attitude.  When i asked for a supervisor, she said "i am one!".  When i finally got to a manager, he was just as rude and disclosed just as much information... NOTHING! they said they needed my information before telling me anything about their company.

"...Wells Fargo doesn't participate in third-party collections..."

Yes, they do.  When they decide a debt is uncollectable they sell it to a third party at a discount and let them try to get the money.

I know this because Wells Fargo was calling me up to 6 times/day looking for Michael the Deadbeat.  After 2 weeks I convinced them that my number would not lead them to Michael.  About a month later I got a call frin a third party collection company looking for him.  That company only called me one time.

I recieved a call from "CRA" today saying that we owed a debt. They even had the last 4 digits of the social security number. THEY ARE A FRAUD!!!! They told me that they purchased my old truck loan through my bank...wells fargo. Well that's great and all but Wells Fargo doesn't participate in third-party collections. They have their own department for that. They also denied taking mail in payments, well there is a law called the FDCPA that protects us consumers...and it says it is illegal to deny payment of any amount. Also, they did not do a mini-remanda which is required by law, nor did they even know if they were a third-party collection agency. When I corrected the man on the phone he didn't say anything and then put me on hold. I was talking to someone about this debt while on hold and all of the sudden he got on the phone and said he will no longer take my abuse and hung up. I called back and he hung up before anyone even said anything. Then I called again and it said it was a unlisted number and call wont go through. I called them from my cell phone and the call went through. So these people are a fraud! Please becareful whengiving out any info over the phone or net. I worked collections for a few years and know the rules and laws and these people evidently don't. You need to report them to the institution they are claiming to have aquired the debt from as well as make a complaint on here to warn other people. You can also call the better business bureau and see if they can help.

I recieved a call from a ms. couldn't-understand-her-name, wanting my husband to contact them back as soon as possible.  I told her he was at work and if she could give me a little more info, before I bug at work.  She YELLED several things at me and then stated she could only give info to me if I was his power of attorney...which I am...even still, she would not give me anything and hung up on me.  I was so mad, I call my husband and had him call the CRA people back.  He asked for the man's name who answered and he only would mumble so you couldn't understand.  My husband also asked why they person who called was yelling at his wife, the man asked if my husband had not been on the line to hear the yelling, therefore couldn't not have known the other lady yelled at me. The man from CRA asked my husbands name, and my husband said if he could not have the man's name or any info on the company, he would not verify his. After going a round with that, the CRA guy still would not give him his name or any other information and told my husband to not call back.  VERY shady operation.  I don't trust ANY caller as it is, but I hope no one gets screwed over by these people.

Just had a very long conversation with a gentlemen who tried to thank me for my military service and then attacked me about a disputed debt over 10 years ago.  Threatened me several times to include saying he "mirandized" me and used "do your due diligence" and even brought forth some "federal and state laws" in general but couldn't name ONE!!  Threatened that 1099c IRS filing was going to make me pay...bla bla bla--I requested mail correspondence and he got mad saying he was offering me to settle today for less than one quarter!!!  I told him that no future phone calls were necessary and from no on we could correspond via mail.  He said "oh no, this matter WILL be resolved by next Wednesday or I am releasing it!"  Okay buddy!!

I recently worked for this company, until i got tired of lying to people. calling and harassing old ladies listen if the bill is over stat of limatations go to credit report . com and dispute the bill if its over stat the company cannot legally do anything. so they will have to remove it from your credit. As far as the 1099c irs filling bs they do not do it. all you need to do is tell them cist and desist not to call you. if you pay this the only thing it clears is your mind. SO AS FAR IS PAYING THIS YOU DONT HAVE TO just dispute it on your credit report call experion.
