Debt Collector
I agree with a few of these comments, but disagree with the "believers". I got the call too about "who is handling the estate of...". I too worried that it was fraudsters/debt collectors. The call was about 2 Capital One credit cards, but the thing that made me suspicious, was they were asking information that they should have already had. When I told them that I had already given that information less than a month ago and they should have that on their computer, she said that sometimes the computers don't talk to each other, If you work for the same company, you should all be able to see the same thing. You can't tell me that a company as large as Capital One doesn't have computers that show the same information in different departments.
I also told them, previously, that we would pay both items in full, but she offered for us to settle for a smaller amount. Why would a company want to not collect all the money coming back to them?
Be cautious.

I just spoke with them. They indeed collect and are noted as debt collection. They have the crappy job of having to confirm the death of card holders. They advised that they scan estate records - just in case someone is not being completely truthful when they claim there is no estate. Just be calm - speak firmly but not roughly - and they will even tell you that ONLY the estate is responsible. if there is no estate - and no co-card user[s], the "file" remains with them but they cannot collect. You may receive several more pieces of mail regarding the debt - you should keep them for a "reasonable" amount of time - but again - you don't have to pay the debt. Just having lost my mom - she was 81 - this was rough, so I am glad they spoke with facts, they were calm, offered condolences, and reminded me that only the estate is responsible. No estate - no probate - no money, no payment. If you reading this because you lost a family member or loved one - my condolences to you and your family.

Could you identify what company or telemarketer is calling me?  She left a name- Nicole Drager and the number 877-326-5680.  I have no idea who this is and why they are contacting me concerning my husband's death.

Just had a call from this number.  The person ("Justine") said she was trying to contact whoever was handling the estate of my late step-father, and she did NOT sound threatening at all.  It can be overwhelming and therefore perceived as threatening if you're navigating a situation of handling the affairs of someone who has passed. It is nice to see that those who actually spoke to the people found them to be professional to deal with.   While a debtor can't collect directly from someone who has passed, they can collect from the estate of the deceased (but not an executor/executrix personally).

I got a call from this number and this company shouldn't even have my number.  Looking up family members numbers and calling is bogus.  If they can't collect on a deceased persons dept then they shouldn't call any family member at all.  They also shouldn't be asking if a family member knows the amount of the dept owed to them.  I would guess that some of the post on here are by Capitol One employees.  I will not call them back since they had no right to get my number and call in the first place.

I agree that some commenters on here are either exaggerating, or plants by competitors.  This was Capital One asking very politely about the balance on my deceased mother's credit card.  They did not ask for any information, and they went out of their way to explain that neither I nor any other family member was responsible for her debts.  They were only trying to contact whoever was managing her estate to make sure that person was aware of the outstanding balance.  The person I spoke to was extremely polite, professional, and sympathetic.

I would agree with Shephard and Sharon on this number. They are actually Capital One Estate Administration & they are just trying to find out if probate will be filed, in which case they will file a claim for outstanding debt. The lady I spoke with was very pleasant & after explaining the situation to them, they told me that they would not be contacting me again & thanked me for returning their call. It's possible that some people are confusing this number with another collection agency that isn't so pleasant to deal with (like West Asset Management).

They are not a debt collector they are the actual bank themselves. They aren't holding you responsible for the debt they are explaining a process to you and trying to be helpful. If you go through probate for your deceased family member like I did for my son, they search the courts and find it and then send a claim in.  The estate then has to pay if you want to keep your family's property. That is how it works. Its easier to work with them. Ignorance is not bliss. Certain things have to be taken care of after someone dies. They were very helpful for me in closing my son's estate. I had to settle all his bills before I could sell his house and they reduced the debt for me greatly. You'd be wise to comply otherwise, it may cost you more in the end. It's a necessary evil. Call them, they are very nice people to deal with and were very understanding and sympathetic to my family's situation.

I keep getting calls from this number 8773265680. The last person who called was name Nicloe Drager. If you get a call from this number, do not reply. It is a debt collection agency that is trying to collect on a deceased's estate of a relative. Remember you are not responsible for any debts that is left by your relative especially if there is no will. So don't let the collection agency bully you in giving any information to make their job eaiser! It is one of the cost of unsecured debts that will never be recovered!

This is a debt collection agency calling on(in my case) Captiol One's behalf.  They are trying to collect on a debt from the estate of someone who has passed away. Whoever is administering the estate is not responsible personally for any remaining debt of the deceased. This is a good time to have an attorney to help with resolving this kind of issue.
