Same thing here... text at 10:34 10/07/09 513 area code, AT&T wireless...
JimJr 2009-10-07 19:45:45 Unknown
Got the same text message ten minutes ago. I don't have a Bank of America account and I live in the Cincinnati area as well. Has to be a scam. Also got a suspicious call from American Express earlier, and when I searched both phone numbers (this one and the Amex one) they are connected to fraud issues.

I'm also in Cincinnati, and AT&T, got this MSG this morning.

Got a message supposedly from Bank of America asking me to call about "unsolicited activity on my account". I don't have a BOA account so didn't call. The number they gave was 877-332-0008. Clearly a scam!!!!!

This is 100% fradulant, and has NOTHING to do with any real accounts that you have. You may have a BOA account, you may not. They are simply playing the odds. I don't have BOA, and I knew from the start it was a scam, but not every person getting it will, unfortunately. You do NOT need to put on a fraud altert on your credit report, or pay for any services as a result of this.
With that being said, I HIGHLY recommend getting Identity Theft protection, so long as it isn't simply credit report monitoring, but is proactive in blocking any attempts at using your social or identity to sign up for services. For instance, Life-Lock not only monitors your credit report (as they all do), but they actually have safe-guards so that if someone DOES get your social and address etc etc, they cannot use it. And even if they are able to use it (which CAN happen), THEY do all of the work to recover your good name. Think of it like this, when your identity is stolen (fastest growing crime in America, SCARY), you have to make hundreds and hundreds of phone calls to the banks, institutions, etc etc trying to get them to clear you of the crime. It takes hours and hours of your time, they need police reports, any proof you can muster up, and it WILL drain your life. I forget the actual number but something like 2 years is the average time it takes to fix your credit and what your name is linked to.
The lesson is, get a GOOD Identity Theft company (I recommend Life-Lock), so that if something ever does happen, THEY do all of the phone calls and faxing documents etc etc for you, that way you can get on with your life. $9.95/month is a small price to pay for that kind of security. you can find out more about this and other great financial advice your grandmother would give you at www.daveramsey.com

I contacted Customer Service, she was very sweet but shed very little light on the subject.
The bottom line is this: anyone can send out mass text messages to phone numbers by simply emailing yourphonenumber@txt.att.net.
The good news is that you can change the settings for your account to block these numbers, or allow certain ones if you want them. You can try one of these websites to get these blocked.
Register at mymessages.wireless.att.com and you can change your message settings and stop getting any scam hits from now on.
I hope this helps everyone! One thing I'd reccommend is giving AT&T a call and they will credit your account for the message, if you are paying per text or have a limited amount, also they may give you a courtesy credit for your time. Plus the more people that report this, the more likely they are to do something about it. Thanks and good luck!

I'm in Dayton, OH. just got the same thing. Is this cause to put a 90day fraud alert on accounts via a credit bureau?
jag 2009-10-07 15:43:28 Unknown
Are you an AT&T cell phone user, too?
lb 2009-10-07 15:40:01 Unknown
This happened to me too. Anyone discover anything yet? I'm in Cincy, Ohio too.
Squeaky Clean 2009-10-07 15:30:36 Unknown
I'll call AT&T right now, and let you know what they say. My guess, however, is that they won't have any info or be able to help much at all. We'll see.... be back in 5.

Yep,Cincy, Ohio
toy 2009-10-07 15:28:06 Unknown
Maybe AT&T should get a call, and have them do the leg work on who's stealing their 'phone numbers.
Squeaky Clean 2009-10-07 15:28:02 Unknown
What city/state are you guys based out of? I'm in Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm wondering if they are hitting regional pockets at a time or if it's just entirely national.

Got the same text, 10/7/09 10:45 a.m.. I, also have AT&T. I called the number, all computer generated. They wanted card number, expiration date and pin#. I guess there3 are some stupid people out there who gave it to them.
Squeaky Clean 2009-10-07 15:21:10 Unknown
I got the exact same message on 10/7/09 at 10:36am (I have/work for AT&T). I called the number (knowing it was a scram) but hoping to get ahold of a live person to discover more. No luck. It's all competely automated, and a poor system at that. They always tell you the info you entered is invalid with all phising scams, so of course you never get anywhere. Who in the world are we supposed to contact to report this kind of stuff? Really aggrevating that they are going to rip people off and get away with it. What to do next, any suggestions?

Posted this same comment under another #, but got text from above # regarding unsolicited activity on Bank of America account. Called BOA and they said that it was a fraud and not to respond. Texts started yesterday (10/6/09). I was surprised to get this text because BOA shouldn't have had my new cell #. Was wondering if anyone else uses AT&T wireless. Just trying to figure out where the scammers got their info.
