This number called me to report fraud on my wells fargo account. He asked for my personal information and I declined and said I would contact the bank directly. He gave me this number to call back 1-877-241-8536 and told me to reference 6983912144. I called the number on the back of my card instead, and sure enough there was no fraud on my account.

I got two calls from them today because apparently my signature on my most recent check didn't match the old ones, and they were asking me to call 877-341-8536 by the end of today. I was a little suspicious at first and looked up the number (that's how I got here).

Since I was getting mixed reviews in this thread, I ended up just calling Wells Fargo (1-800-869-3557) and asked to speak with a banker. As it turns out, my friend didn't endorse the check I wrote to her, so they are returning the check credits back to my account.

I'm still not sure if the other number was a scam or not, so I guess just call Wells Fargo directly if you want to be 100% sure.

I received a call from 404.684.4595 on my cell phone claiming they were WF. She wanted me to "verify" the last 4 digits of my social security number. I asked for a number to call back because I didn't feel comfortable. She gave me 877.341.8536 with her name and a reference number. I called WF direct instead. The first person couldn't find anything and transferred me to the fraud department. SHE couldn't find anything either. I was on the phone quite a while too. What's interesting is that the number that called me was 404.684.4595 but the person gave me 877.341.8536 to call back. But I'm not about to even give out the last four of my SS# because that's all workers see now anyway. People who answer the phone don't have access to your full number and scammers know that.

Another interesting thing is that I asked what account this was for. The lady said the "dba" name of our company. But when I called Wells Fargo, I told them the dba name but they asked for the legal name instead. WF couldn't find anything on our debit cards, and our business checks have our legal name on them.

I also called the 404 number back just to see what would happen. It rang about 6 times, then a recording said "You've reached the Wells Fargo fraud detection department in Atlanta, GA..." It was a plain recording, no WF music or phone tree. But when I did a google on it, the only thing that came up under WF, Atlanta, and Fraud was a story posted in February about an Atlanta man admitting his role in a fraud ring that stole over $260K from WF customers in South Carolina and Virginia. I probably can't post the link, so google "Jacquis Depree Nelson and Wells Fargo and Atlanta" That search shows that the man was sentenced a few days ago. And I'm assuming the ring is bigger than him. Sooo... give out your info at your own risk. But everything I researched show it's a scam.

uh - you're misleading people. i got this number and JUST called back. I didn't have to do anything but give the last four of my business EIN. They verified a check that I wrote to myself. They had all of my account info. all you people telling each other it's a scam... what is wrong with you?!?!? did you ACTUALLY call the number back??!?!?! Or did you just assume because you think every odd number is a scam? wow. Seriously ignorant.

have fun when you follow the advice to ignore this number and your check doesn't clear because wells fargo didn't get authorization.

It's Wells Fargo Fraud Division.  I called my local branch and they verified it.  It's always a good idea to check if you think something is fishy.  But this one is real.

877-341-8536 is definitely a Wells Fargo fraud department number.  Five minutes after I didn't take the call from that number, a banker I know called me to verify information about a check.  I asked about the phone number and was told by the banker that it was the bank's fraud department who had attempted to contact me about the same item.

You've obviously never heard of scammers "spoofing" real numbers.  That's why people should call the number on the back of their cards, or the number in the phone book or on their financial statements.  And that's not conspiracy theory; it's fact.

Was in fact Wells Fargo calling to verify an out of sequence check (out of an old school checkbook vs a computer check).  WF called the three different owners listed on the account to their unlisted #s, scammers can't pull that one off.

To the phishing conspiracy minions and bingot.....put the tin foil caps back on and step back from the keyboard it is for everyone's good.  It would be best to review the years of reviews ahead of you before you post inaccurate information and make things harder on WF.

This phone number is a scam. I went to the local Wells Fargo branch and here is what they said :

Fraud prevention had nothing. It looks like someone was phishing for information. All is well over here as long as you didnt give them information. I had the fraud department put a precationary flag for phone initiated transactions on your profile for the next month.

Prank Call
A woman with a southern US accent was on the phone, claiming to be from Wells Fargo. She claimed that Wells Fargo had received a large check to my account that didn't look right - the signature wasn't consistent with the others on my account.

I've been using banks for a very long time and this is the first time I've ever received such a call.

I collected her phone number (the one shown in this thread) and a "reference number." Then I used a legitimate Wells Fargo phone number to see if there was really a problem. The bored representative didn't see anything wrong with my account and didn't bother to ask for the reference number.

NOT WELLS FARGO.  They called me and left a message and I called wellsfargo and was connected to their fraud dept.   they said it is definitely a scam and ALWAYS hang up and then call the 800 number on your debit card when receiving any calls from someone saying they are wells Fargo!

Called Wells Fargo Customer service.  They put me on hold and when came back said they checked with their fraud department and saw no fraud flag on my account.  I then asked them if 8773418536 was a real Wells Fargo number.  They put me on hold again and when came back said that they checked with their "other" fraud department and yes, it is a real Wells Fargo number and they were trying to get a hold of me to verify a large check I had recently written.  I told them that I had written that check and they said they would pass the info along to the fraud department for me.

I called Wells at 1-800-869-3557. They said 877-341-8536 is a valid Wells Fargo phone number and is the Fraud department. However, the first person I spoke to was an idiot and told me it wasn't and WF didn't call and there was nothing on my account. I asked for a supervisor, who then verified the phone number as WF Fraud and said WF Fraud would call from this number if they questioned a signature on a check, which is what the original caller said.

This is Wells Fargo fraud dept.  They call to verify checks posted to your account that look out of the norm.  They do already have the info.  FYI if you do not verify with them they will return the payment.

I got a very legitimate sounding voicemail from this # saying it was Wells Fargo Fraud Dept. Instead of calling this number back I called the number on the back of my Wells Fargo card. They researched my account and said that nothing was wrong and that no one from Wells Fargo had called me. They were happy to know that I did not call back the number and give them any information. Be safe and call back the number on your card. If you answer the call just tell them you will call back the number on your card for security reasons.

If you get the message, just call the Wells Fargo main number:  1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557)

It most definitely is a scam.

They are asking for past addresses, etc, which can be used for identity theft.

This number IS Wells Fargo Fraud Line.  They called to verify that a check I wrote out from an old check book, with a very old number on the check, was good.  I had just given the check to the company that painted my house.  Don't let these other replies sway you.  NOT A SCAM!!!

This is really Wells Fargo.  I called Wells customer service number.  They can transfer you to the fraud detection services and the lady also verified the phone number that was left on my message.  She verified the account activity and read verbatim the comments I had made to the fraud detection representative, part of which was questioing whether this was really WF or not.  It is really WF.

Wells Fargo fraud detection number.

They do not ask for sensitive information. They provide multiple choice answers to the questions they ask, regarding information that may be linked to the account or possibly SSN (i.e. the county in which a mortgage is held, a past address, etc)
