Your husband was correct about these scammers. Microsoft even has a warning on their website about this type of scam.

Some woman with a heavy foreign accent called and told me that a number of hackers were trying to access my PC. I told her that I had a VERY good security system on my PC. When I told her that I was not interested, she hurriedly stated that this was no scam, then she was with Microsoft Security and that people were desperately trying to hack my PC. She wanted me to turn on my PC and tell her who I used for a search engine. I couldn't wrap my mind around Microsoft calling me - I thought it was a scam, so I told her I had a doctors appointment and needed to leave and to call me back the next day. I was afraid to turn on my PC so I called my husband at work who looked up the number on the internet. He said it was a scam. They thought they had a sucker on the hook so they called back 6 times while I was on the phone with my husband. But they did not call back the next day.

I received a call from this number today, saying they are from Amax and wanted me to download a FREE virus checker onto my computer. I already knew it was a scam but I pretended to be on my computer following the steps until the second person came on the line. I then told her I was not going to give her any information off of my computer and I know it is a scam. She tried to convince me it was a legitimate offer. After arguing with me for a bit she finally hung up. DO NOT EVER GIVE INFO OVER THE PHONE.

this is a scam. they tell you they have detected a virus warning from your computer via your IP but they don't know your IP (the real one, not your internal ip but they guessed at that wrong as well.)  http://tekknocrates.com/microsoft-office-support.html

Microsoft did not do this to you. It was a scam. They are probably looking for a way into your computer to steal passwords.

I received a call today and he told me he is calling from Microsoft. I need go to this web site to fix my computer problem. After that I got virus all over my computer. Why Microsoft do that to me. I am getting ride of all my Microsoft machines and moving to Linux now.

This number called today, rang twice and hung up. I searched the number online and got:
