877-428-9477
Not a valid # 2012-06-01 23:01:24 Unknown
I went to the Discover website and called their customer service #. The rep was very helpful and confirmed that the 1-877-428-9477 number is not one of theirs. She said to ignore the calls.

Looks like a scam being promoted here.

This is a warning - this number is part of a fraud campaign targeting numerous financial institutions. Note the pattern of shill postings all claiming the number is real - an obvious giveaway.
The large number of phony posts claiming the call is real come from some con artists spamming the site to try to fool people. There is a similar pattern to other fake calls claiming to be from Chase, Citibank, Bank of America, US Bank, Wells Fargo, RBC, TD Bank, PayPal, etc. all with the same shill postings:

This number called me which is strange because I don't have a discover card. If it is legit, why woould they call someone who doesn't have one of their cards? I smell a scam and I belive all these people that are saying its legit are in on it too. Or its the same person under diffrent names

I received an email from Discover with this phone number 877-428-9477. I called the 1-800-DISCOVER number to ensure that the 877 number was not fraudulant. It's not, Discover card monitors all accounts & occasionally they call just to ensure that everything is fine.
janfu 2011-06-06 21:04:24 Unknown
Discover Card Fraud Prevention Security Department, just calling to make sure new charges on my account were made by me (they were).
Becca 2011-06-06 21:04:24 Unknown
I received a phishing e-mail purportedly from Discover Card. This is a SCAM. Call 1-800-discover...not this number.
sgreen 2011-06-06 21:04:24 Unknown
I called Discover Card via their regular phone line (800)discover and they verified that they did email me and the 877# above is legit.
Never hurts to call the mainline though. They have no problem directing your call...

I don't have any Discover card account or any type of affiliation, so why would they call if I don't have anything with them? TOLL FREE CALL caller id seems like some kind of scam/fraud company/person hiding their identity.

It is legit although I called 1-800-DISCOVER instead.
Received e-mail alerting me to suspicious activity on my Discover card. Logged onto the web portal (confirming SSL along the way) which also prompted me to call in. Called the main number instead and the automated attendant asked for the last 4 digits of the card, the last 4 digits of my Social Security number and my zip code. (Discover will never ask for your 16 digit card number.) I was immediate routed to the fraud department. The automated system wanted me to confirm three recent purchases. I opted to speak to someone directly so I pressed 0. We quickly confirmed that the charges were legitimate and the alert was cleared.
I agree with the previous poster that you should call the main number and/or log onto the portal in the usual way. Do not follow links or call numbers you do not recognize.
Above all, NEVER give the 16-digit card number to anyone wanting you to "confirm" your account.

Went shopping, Discover card was declined, so I used another card.
Came home, saw the email with the number, it addressed my info correctly and I kinda had a clue that my recent usage may have raised some flags.
Called the number, the lady correctly traced my last usages on the card, and said that the card was on hold because of those unusual usages. Confirmed that I had made those transactions, and I was cleared.
In general though, even if it seemed legit, never call the number, click on the link, or reply to the email that THEY contact you with. THEY could be anyone!

I recently received this number in an e-mail. I looked it up just in case it was a phishing scam. I found this site, and, because of the multiple items saying scam, called the main line and was immediately transferred to the fraud department. I had some unusual activity on my card due to my borrowing a car in a strange city. They wanted to verify that this was legitimate activity. The Discover rep verified that the number in the e-mail is legit.
Chuck 2010-05-28 23:27:48 Unknown
It's legit. They are very helpful and there to make sure you're good with the charges against your card.
Aaron 2010-02-19 02:47:43 Unknown
It's a legitimate number from discover. I just called 1800 DISCOVER and he confirmed that they have 8 security numbers, and that each method of notification contains a different number. He explained that the text message, voice mail, and email alerts will all contain different numbers but that they are legitimate.
Arthur Galpin 47 2010-02-03 23:26:20 Unknown
It's a legitimate phone number from Discover.
Word to the wise: When you get a phone number from a credit card company in an email message, don't call the number they give you, call the number on the back of your credit card instead--this way you know you are calling a legitimate phone number.

This number came in my email - I also received a text with the number 1-866-440-3905. I called discover and there was no fraud alert on my card or activity! DO NOT CALL - call Discover instead. SCAM!
Diane 2009-12-02 05:21:16 Unknown
I got a call from 1-877-428-9477 but I did NOT call that number directly in case it was a hoax... why chance giving my info to a scammer? Anyway, I was linked directly to the fraud dept when I called the # on the back of my card.. they verified my purchases, and also offered me free text fraud alerts, I love the technology.
Janet 2009-11-16 01:38:10 Unknown
i got an email telling me to call this number immediately. i didnt, i googled it first to find this website and am now proceeding to call discover from the main number. thanks to everyone who posted here with the info they did.

I got a message on my answering machine telling me to call 1-877-428-9477 immediately. Then I got an email telling me to call the same number. I called 1-800-DISCOVER instead and ended up talking to the fraud department. Someone used my card for illegal purposes, and Discover closed my account.
Always call the number on the statement or on the back of the card.
Dan 2009-08-22 20:04:22 Unknown
I received an email. It is typically legit if your full name which is on your card is on it and your last 4 digits of the card. Always recommend calling main number versus numbers they provided...extra caution. I called the main number and it was a legitimate number for Discover Card.
Becca 2009-07-03 16:03:18 Unknown
I received an e-mail purporting to be from Discover asking to call this number. IT IS A PHISHING scheme. Please...call 1-800-discover. Do NOT call this number.
The victim 2009-05-11 16:48:32 Unknown
It is a fraud! I did talk with the criminal. He sounds really like a legitimate Discover rep.
Why don't we ask the law enforcement to call this number to track these criminals down?
Call Discover for yourself 2009-05-05 23:24:19 Unknown
It's a fraud !!!! Don't call this number, call the main Discover number to confirm.
LAR 2009-03-23 22:27:29 Unknown
Yes, i got an email from discover saying to call this number. I was a little nervous so i called the main customer service number and eventually ended up in the fraud dept. I asked about this number and she said it was probably one of their many phone lines. So, this number is from discover card.
Good-To-Go 2008-11-28 20:13:33 Unknown
We also received a call from this number and confirmed it was a valid discover card fraud line.
