I recently started an LLC through LegalZoom, and have been getting lots of things in the mail, and phone calls left and right. This number did not leave a voicemail.

SCAM.  They ask you to send a blank cheque to a fax number.  The form they send you to fill out is full of spelling mistakes.  Surely people who spend their entire useless lives conducting criminal activity would think to use spell-check

I received a call from 1-800-868-9326 this morning from a lady named Sharon claimed to be from AmEx asking to verify some basic information of my business account. I was suspicious as she couldn't tell who is my POS provider.  After verifying my address and thanking me for providing my email address, she asked to do a trial run for American Express card processing.  I said no.  When I asked to call back to verify her credibility, she gave me this number: 1-877-464-4664 x 2073.

I called back, a lady answered the phone and explained that they're legit and transferred me to Sharon.  I told Sharon that the number displayed on my phone is not the same as the one she gave me.  She insisted that it should be the same.  But my phone screen doesn't lie.  It still displays 1-800-868-9326.  I called this number.  It just kept ringing with no answer.

I then googled AmEx merchant account customer number and called.  I was told that AmEx would never call their customers unless they have set up an account with AmEx.  I haven't yet.

Not a big deal. They really are American Express customer service. I recently set up a Moneris pos terminal, and they were calling to confirm our merchant number, etc. We do not accept AmEx, but when we signed up with Moneris they checked us off as accepting Visa, MC, AmEx and debit. I just let Moneris know that we won't be accepting AmEx, and I called the above number to tell them the same thing, and there was no problem doing so. Everyone was very polite and accommodating. I did not give the above number anything more than my phone number and they already had my name, business name, and merchant account number.

Got the same call from 1-877-464-4664. Didn't answer call but caller left msg. Presented himself as Zack from American Express. And yes, AMEX doesn't solicit over phone but they do have independent people that constantly want to open up accounts for them. Whether they are legit or not, you shouldn't give them any info. Just call AMEX if you want their services. I had a new POS and these ppl kept calling to set up account free of charge. However AMEX service charge is usually about 1% more than VISA and MC!Terrible for small businesses. If you don't want AMEX programed onto your terminal don't tell them anything. By giving them your Merchant#, it allows them to sign you up and god knows what. If they have you on file and are legit, they should have all the neccessary info in front of them AND they should be the ones verifying the merchant #s to you. NOT YOU. If you have caller display; remember the # and don't bother answering the phone. My guess is this number is legit but a bit of a scam to instantly sign you up into a contract. If you do get setup with an account, just don't process an AE card. The first transaction will sign up instantly! Then it's a pain in the @ss to get out of.

Caller claimed to be from American Express merchant services. A call to my POS terminal/service provider and the local police confirmed that this call was an attempt to send someone to tamper with our terminal for the purpose of debit/credit card fraud.
