They knew it was my birthday and sent me a letter saying they wanted to give me a New laptop computer.  And if I called that number, "(877) 491-9683",  within 48 hours They would also send a complimentary $250 cash rewards card! Hahahaha yea right.

My experience with direct buy, Naperville for others to learn from.

I received the invite "free laptop in celebration of our anniversary" and a $200 cash gift certificate if I called within 48 hours. I actually called the number on the letter and they scheduled an appointment for me to see a 90mins presentation. Out of curiosity, I went for it and here's the deal.

1) 90 mins presentation on their products and how you must become a member that same day for thousands of dollars or else never have the chance again. I refused to become a member of course since it made no sense to me why I should be rushed into something with such aggression.

2) Free laptop is pure scam. I was given a gift certificate with instructions on how to claim the free "Super slim 7" SX-E760 mini laptop netbook with windows" ( mind you, it was never mentioned as a netbook or a 7" screen on the invite). On the instructions, I have to pay a one-time non-refundable activation fee of $24.95 and additionally pay $59.95 non-refundable shipping and handling charges ( Total out-of-my-pocket payment = $84.9) to receive this mini laptop in 2 months. Actual retail value of this mini laptop online from other stores is $90 with free shipping. The netbook has the memory of a hand calculator.

3) $200 cash gift card is also pure scam. I was given this and the instructions on the card needed me to register with a particular website in order to buy anything from them with the gift card which I did. The website only uses a small portion of the gift card for each item and still forces you to pay for their items which are higher than regular prices without the gift card. For example, if a wrist watch cost $60, the website only allows you to use say $10 from the gift and pay the extra $50 with your actual credit / debit card and on other websites, this wrist watch retails for $48.

All I can say is beware and learn from my experience. There is nothing free in the country and there never will be.

Has anyone actually tried this Direct Buy stuff to just see if one can be given the laptop without buying anything or becoming a member? Please post your experience for others to learn from it at least.

I called and they said you had to listen to a 90 minute presentation where they would try to sell you something and regardless of if you purchased something you would get a free laptop and $100 gas voucher.  I know that it is a rip off but I don't know how.

My husband got the same letter as others have indicated- only now the offer for gas has gone down to $100!!  Don't they know how much gas has gone up?  It took me a fraction of a second to rip the letter up.  Nothing is FREE- there is always a catch.

From a little research it sounds like DirectBuy memberships cost $5000 - so they're really offering you something which I suspect is worth less than $1000 in return for buying a membership. In other words they want you to pay them net $4000 - nothing is free.

The caller is not Microsoft, it is DirectBuy of DuPage County. The diclaimer on the back of the "Sample $250 Cash Rewards Card" states, "This promotion is not sponsored by or affiliated with Microsoft, but they are a major supplier. Deposit, shipping and handling are the responsibility of the recipient."
