Ask yourself WHY these "debt collectors" call instead of sending you a certified letter. Answer: Because they know they have an extremely weak case or no case at all, and they figure if they can get a live person on the phone they can bully him or her into giving them some money. I've had these "Portfolio Recovery" people call me for something involving my sister, whom I haven't seen for 20 years, for my spouse's ex (that's been an ex for almost 30 years) and for people I don't even know who just happened to live on the same street ("go knock on their door and tell them to come to your phone"--for real!). Just block the number if you can, or disconnect the call. They've got nothing, and if they did they'd do something other than just harass you on the phone.

you should know banks and debt collectors are not remotely scared of the BBB.  They have no power to do anything but list if the company replied or not to your complaint....

The reason there is no one on the line when you first answer it is the computer which auto dials these phone numbers has to recognize that the number has answered then notify one of the dozens if not hundreds of stooges at these call centers that a live one is on the line.  Just wait, they will answer you. It can take up to 30 seconds or longer.  If you pick up the phone and it is dead air you can bet it is a computer call and that it is from a debt collector most of the time.

The 877-492-4888 number is a debt collection number and the company name is Allied Interstate inc. They have called me many times and will hang up if I answered until recently when someone didn't. Needless to say they had the wrong informaion but still have not removed my number from the list. They where trying to collect a debt for bank of america. I called bank of america to verify that there is no loan or credit card information in my name and they verified that I did not have anything. I put a complaint into the federal trade commision this afternoon by email. You can email the federal trade commision at antitrust@ftc.gov or go to there website for more contact information. This company has had issues with the Fedtral Trade Commision in the past for harrasing phone calls and not verifying the right person for the debt. I also called my local sherriffs department since I was unsure if this was not a scam. Just an FYI if someone is trying to collect a debt for something find out the name of the company that they are trying to collect a debt for and give them a call directly before giving out any information to someone that you do not know.

I receive phone calls from this number once a day, every week day.  I have never answered and they never leave a message.  The do not call registry does not seem to keep these people from calling.

I found a solution from another thread to deal with these unwanted calls that is simple and cheap. Frankly the Do Not Call list is useless, another example of a government program that claims to do something while really doing nothing. Instead, if your computer does not have a modem that supports Caller ID, go buy one (USB modems are only $10-$25) and download the PhoneTray Free program at no cost at http://www.phonetray.com/ptfree_download.htm . This application logs all incoming phone calls, and you can select specific numbers, or those that show "Unknown Number", and block them after one ring. The program also provides a number of prerecorded messages that it will play to the caller of the blocked number, such as "Not in service", "Invalid Number", "Disconnected", etc. It took seconds to install. Now for this number and other unwanted numbers we just get a single ring and that is all. I have no affiliation with the folks who make PhoneTray Free, and there are probably other programs out there to do the same thing. It it just the one I saw mentioned in another thread, decided to try it, and it works great.

Same, Allied Intestate I assume. They tried to trick me into paying a very small amount to settle an old debt I have continually disputed. I thought it may be worth getting rid of it for the amount, but it was a scam. I never rec'd anything in the mail, but did get email (part of the scam) to which I replied "Please do not contact me again." Couple months later I got another phone call and told them to stop calling me. Now and the dead silence phone calls now 4-5 times a day. I have filed a complaint with attorney general and FCC. So far, nothing.

IF this is a debt collection agency (and remember, you NEVER KNOW who is on the other end of these calls), they don't know what they're doing because I am not behind on any payments. Or they're trying to scam me. Scam phone calls? *sigh* All the time...

This is a debt collector tied to Portfolio Recovery. They buy bad debts from the original and then try to collect. The original has already written off whatever they sell. If the debt is not owed then take legal action against the collector or ask for the states attorney generals office to get involved in conducting an investigation of the companies business practices in your state. The calls I get are '800 Service' on the ID. Even if owed, in Texas, there is nothing they can do other than call. The only time someone needs to respond and quickly to set up terms, if it was a student loan as they can attach wages, Social Security, Pensions, whatever and you won't like what they'll take. I hope this will help a lot of folks out there that these offshoots of Portfolio Recovery are harrassing.

I continue to get multiple calls daily, I do not answer and no messages are left. On a holiday my 10 year old son answered the phone and there was indeed someone on the line. My son handed me the phone. They claim to be collecting on some astronomical debt with a creditor I never had an account with and claim this is a debt from 1996!
I told them it is not my debt, furthermore it would be uncollectibe nearly anywhere and that they should cease calling me. The most disturbing thing, besides the phone calls continuing, is that they (did not assertain who the company was that was calling) have the last 4 digits of my social - they did not however recite my full ss#. Anyone receiving these type of calls should be extremely cautious to scamming, phishing for your identification. They also recited an address of mine that was over 10 years old!
Do not provide any personal information!

These people have called me repeatedly as I can see the multiple calls on the caller ID that have occurred during the day while I am at work. I answered the phone while working from home one day and they said they were from Allied Interstate trying to collect a debt and tried to verify my personal info - they referenced a previous address of mine and tried to verify my birthday then hung up on me. So I called them back demanding to know what they wanted, who the company is etc. They again stated they were allied intersate and were trying to collect a debt. They asked to confirm my date of birth and SS# which they stated incorrectly. I did not give them my correct info. I simply told them the info they had was incorrect and that I never held a card from the credit card company they said they were tying to colect the debt from. Beware. This seems like a total scam like they are trying to con you into giving out your peronal information.
