Called saying that Kelly Smith had an important call. Waited and got Pete Morchelli who said he was with Galaxy Asset Purchasing and he was calling on behalf of Chase. He asked me for the last 4 digits of my social and my address and I told him I was not going to give him that information as I have no connection with any debt to Chase. He said OK and hung up.

They called me saying I owed $4974.07 from 16 years ago for a MasterCard which I never had a Master Card. I said 16 years ago and your just now calling said they just got it. I asked them to send me something showing where I signed for anything to do with this debt, signature anything they said they would so I give them my address and all they send me is a bill!!! I tried to call them and they tell you to hold then eventually transfer you and that person does not answer and their voicemail is full!! Ain't that some stuff!!How do these people continue to get away with this. Some people must fall for their bull and actually send them money are they couldn't continue to do this. Everyone needs to complain to the FTC on a regular basis I guess, how can we ban together to and stop these people?

This call falls right on the heels of ER Solutions calling. Two #'s blocked in a short time span. If I owed someone a debt, or if they even left a message. Guess it can't be that important if someone can't even leave a message! Too late now, call # is blocked.

I found this site very helpful for this situation...bottom line, if they call do not admit to owning an old debt with anyone and they can not re-start the clock.

There is a statute of limitations to how long it can be on your credit report as negative. If it is greater than 7 years you can request to have it taken off of your credit report to keep it from being a negative on your score. That is where the myth comes from.

This call comes from a company in Renton Washington called Convergence. They buy "old debts" and try to collect on them. Ignore them at all costs.

Unless the debt is sold to a new collection agency that can renew the debt.

Please do not allow this number to call people and harass people. Use up my cell phone minutes.

Actually, there is a statute of expiration for an old debt. If the collector does not have the original promissory note and it has already charged off of your credit the debt is then invalid. The company can still try and collect it if someone doesn't know they don't have to pay it. Old debt is sold all the time. Know about credit and what the current credit law is. These debt collectors are crooks these days and will tell you they are gonna take you to court and threaten all kinda of craziness... I'm a renter and check my credit faithfully every 6 months to check and make sure nothin false is on there. Of course everything on there are my current cards and my old student loans. I pay my credit cards current and don't answer unknown calls.
Good luck!
tony 2012-07-30 17:02:56 Unknown
of course there is a statute of limitations on debt collection. It varies from state to state but is usually four years from the date of your last payment. If you make a payment....it starts the clock running again. This is the short answer.
countryboi 2012-07-27 03:17:01 Unknown
Actually the time in texas to collect a debt is 4 years from the time the last payment was made. it is 6 yrs in oregon.

This company is Convergent. Here is the website. http://www.convergentusa.com/ They are a zombie debt collection agency. They buy old/charged off accounts and then harrass the folks FOREVER trying to get a payment. They call me to put me on hold, I wait then they answer and ask,"How may I help you?" I say, "you called me!!!" Then they want me to confirm my ss#, phone#, address. NO! Just put them on your blocked list. They can resurrect old debt endlessly. Write them and tell them to stop, that you will only accept contact from your original debtor. Send this letter 20 times, certified...then sue them if you get a call.
me too 2012-07-23 18:29:15 Unknown
The federal trade act or the federal debt collections practices act?
metoo 2012-07-23 18:26:30 Unknown
your state attorney general and the FTC will take complaints and action. they deal with this all of the time.
metoo 2012-07-23 18:23:51 Unknown
The calls are from Convergent. This company buys very old debt that is "out of statute". Meaning legally it has been removed from your credit reports and it isn't as though that is a free pass not to pay debts you owe, but there are laws about whether they have the right to continue to try to collect. These outfits seldom have the proper documentation. Do not acknowledge the debt. If you make an arrangement the clock is reset on the seven years and it goes back on your credit report. EVERY STATE IS DIFFERENT- go firat to the FTC site and then you state's attorney general may post information. The state specified in the contract or sale is relevant too.
Military Families have special protections but it is better to understand you can't be sued over old debt than engage your protection and reset the clock maybe? see a lawyer, call your state's attorney general.
