These people from Mendenhall & Assoc actually are calling my neighbors asking who I have living at my house and did they know if I was related to the person they are looking for?  I am outraged.  The person they are looking for doesn't live here.  These people are nothing but scum and will stoop to anything.  I don't know what their company is and no one needs to come to my house to serve any summons.  How dare they call my neighbors?  I feel violated and I haven't done anything and don't know what this about.  What makes them think they have the right to violate my privacy and tell my neighbors they need to serve a warrent?  I am so disturbed I think I will report them to the police and also the FTC and attorney general.

Call Alert:

I received a call from "Mendenhall & Assoc" just this a.m. (03-16/2012) requesting to speak with a person of similar name to mine.  This is the second call in approx. 3 weeks from them.  The first call stated that M&A wanted to verify our address so that they could serve a summons upon me (or upon someone with a similar name) the following week ( absurd procedure in itself).  My husband  became suspicious and ended the call. What scum!  Does anyone have a fire hose to wash them out of society?

BTW: their call number on my phone was 732-276-1062, and not 877-605-5414.

I just got a call from this company.  I refused to verify any information, not even my name.  I told them I do not do business by telephone.  After hanging up, I found this website.  I immediately reported them to the Federal Trade Commission.  If you receive such a call - report them to the FTC, as well as the New Jersey State Attorney General's office.  It is the only way they will be stopped.

Robin, I'm with you.  I also owed a debt - I know for a fact that the debt they were calling about was legit as I had kept record of what I owed on the original credit card.  I also settled my debt (with a lot of budgeting and sacrifice) and feel better about it.  

I DO disagree about the tactics of the employee that called my parents house and used the words "summons" and "served" and would "Diane" be home tomorrow to be served.  My bills are none of my parents' business - I'm an adult - and they scared my parents greatly.

Not saying I didn't get in over my head - I did and I'm working on it.  

So if you DO owe the debt and can settle - do so.  By the same token, Mendenhall needs to change their threatening tactics.

These calls come from a "company" going by the label Mendenhall & Associates asking callers to return a call to 1-800-697-7618. They are a debt collector using scare tactics to intimidate people. There are many documented cases of these people using harassment and threatening legal action which they are unable to take (arrest, serving of warrants) as well as claiming to be a representative of a business, etc, whom THEY ARE NOT (such as court houses and the USPS) all of which are violations of the Fair Debt Collections Practices Act (FDCPA).

PLEASE go to the website of the Federal Trade Commission and file a complaint so that this company will stop harassing and scaring people. The only way "businesses" such as this place get away with this kind of activity is because people fail to know their rights and report these violations.

My mother who I no longer live with was contacted by someone saying that i needed to contact Mendenhall and Associates because they were going to be sending me some documents. I was pretty
perturbed but figured I would go ahead and try and figure out what it was about. When i contacted the # the receptionist asked for my case file # and in order to make sure i was the right person she wanted the last 4 of my social. I told her that before that, I would like there license # in order to feel comfortable about giving up the last 4 of my social. To my surprise she willingly gave there license # 3400-1093543. I was able to pull it up in a Fl business search. After that i called back and verified my last 4 and it did end up being me. I was transferred to a case manager who informed me that it was in regards to a credit card I had in 2010. I was able to verify the debt at www.annualcreditreport.com even though I did recall the card. After I had done that I was actually able to set up a payment plan at a slightly lower amount than what I had owed. With in two hours I had received settlement letter in my email and also 3 days later my hard copy in the mail. When its payed off completely I expect to receive my paid in full letter and was told by Trans-union that when i receive that to fax it in to them and it will be taken off my credit report. So all in all i am in the process of repairing my credit.

I went to my local state police department and they called this place and they said they were trying to serve a summons to court and needed to verify the last 4 digits of my SSN. He told them that I was in the police department and I was not going to give them that information and they needed to stop calling and doing what they are doing. He gave me a number to report this matter to the detectives who are in contact with the FBI and will be looking into this. He told me not to give out any information to these people.

I received a call not that long ago to my cell phone from a 603 area code asking me if I knew (my name) and I stated "NO". They said okay thank you and hung up. A short while after that my mother sent me a text message telling me I need to call this MendanHall and Associates, that they are trying to serve me with a summons and gave her a docket number. She thought that it was very odd, that they would be calling me with something like that. I came online here at work and looked up the name of this business and have came across all of these posts from everyone else. When I looked up the actual number they called from the internet said it was a mobile phone number. DO NOT CALL THE NUMBER BACK. It is a scam and they are looking for information. They called my mother's house from this mobile cellular number and gave her the 877 605 5414 to call back asap and they said it was very urgent. I will be reporting this to my local police department on my way home and hiring a lawyer if needed.

I received two calls for my sister in law asking me to contact her and to let her know she was going to receive court papers and they gave me a case number for her.  I thought it strange that they didn't ask me for her phone number or address but just wanted to know if she lived at my address.

These guys called me and I did indeed owe the debt, I felt compelled to for fill my obligation to my own actions and I paid it off in full, 10 days later I received a paid in full letter in the mail and was able to vastly improve my credit score. I will not put in a good word for collections because, frankly they are an unliked industry. However a much necessary evil due to the fact they do really help our economy.

So if China called President Obama and said we want to collect the money you borrowed back would the United States be deemed a "scammer" or would China be in violation of the FDCPA?

Fl Sec. of State lists Mendenhall & Associates, Inc., principal address at 5726 Old Cheney Hwy, Orlando Fl 32807, with Merrill T. Miller its registered agent at that address, and Richard T. Pugh its president; also uses mailing address of 5732 Old Cheney Hwy, Orlando. These people have someone call from caller ID 918-248-0064 to state that they are calling to tell you that they (process server) are going to serve papers "tomorrow" unless you call 877-605-5414 to make arrangements to pay your debt. Don't try to call 918-248-0064 back. that is an Oklahoma number which is always busy. Even if you owe the debt, these people are violating enough laws in their collection practices that you would probably have counterclaims way beyond the debt. If you do call 877-605-5414 to find out what debt they are alleging, don't be bullied, ask a lot of questions, let them make their threats, get the name of the person that you are talking to, and write everything down that they say. If they lie about the status of any debt or law suit (and they probably will) they can be held responsible for that. Contact an attorney who is familiar with these types of operations. You may be able to recover from these people under federal and state laws, with them paying your costs.

They just called my landlord (who has an unlisted number) and told her that I listed her as a personal reference - which I did not.  I have NEVER given my landlords phone number out.  She is a sweet old lady and they were harassing her, lied to her and said they were coming to serve papers and gave her a case number.  ???  They left 800-697-7618 as a call back.  I called and got a closed message.  I am definately contacting my state attorney general.

I actually got a call from a different number 443-219-0513 claiming to be from the US Postal Service stating that they had legal documents to serve me and that they wanted to know if I'd be home between a certain time period. I knew this was bullshis from the moment they claimed to be the USPS.

They also gave me an 800 number to contact with a case number. Since when does the USPS call anybody?

I think these people have crossed the line into illegal activity by posing as a real organization. I'm not sure who to contact but I'll be starting with my state attorney general.

OMG!! I just a called and they said the same thing, i called the 1800-697-7618 and was put on hold they wanted to verfiy my address and social. They left me on hold so long, the phone disconnected. IS this a scam? WTF

I have been getting messages on my cell phone from "Mendenhall & Associates" looking for a "Doreen LASTNAME" (I won't reveal in case she really exists) and a case # and a "Please call 800 (not 877) 697-7618."

I called and talked to someone in a very crowded, noisy call center who was able to access Doreen's name based on the case number they had given me in their voice mail. I informed her that it was a wrong #. She wanted to know if I knew Doreen. "No." Then she said she would "remove my number from their system." Time will tell...

I've run across these types of calls more and more in the past year. Companies are buying up lists of old or new debts, calling anybody with the same name (or not) and trying to get money out of them. Check out the Clark Howard on radio or TV or on the web. The same number called me wanting to serve a summons, they don't give employee info when asked for and don't have a website. They do claim to be a collection law firm, if that is so, I am pretty sure they are still not following fdcpa regs. here is a link I hope helps

To the Anonymous person replying who worked there.  Are the legal documents to pay a debt for real?  Are they making this up?  I would think that if you were being served with papers, the process would be more legitimate.  How stupid to call the person to inform them ahead of time they are being served!  And furthermore, if you are serving someone with papers why would you ask for their address?  If it was legit, they should know the address.  How can this type of harassment be allowed to continue.  Could someone with authority please stop these people!!!!!

I used to work here till they recently fired me they are b***s*** and should be sued  they make you do all this stuff and say just to make sure you don't get sued and if you do it's your fault. The legal documents are just to pay a debt they're not taking you to court if you refuse to pay all they do is keep calling you. Just tell them to shove the legal documents up there a** and ignore them. :)

Interesting, I just got a message from Mendenhall and Associates today. Funny enough they called a house number I don't use or put on any papers.

They also gave me a 1-800-697-7618 number to call back, but when I did it said it was closed. So who knows what they want. But they gave me a case number too. I haven't done anything illegal that I know of.
