The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

Wow getting calls ( nasty law breaking calls ) from this company. But the strange thing is they pretend to also be a courier service ( different number ) and about to serve you papers, but when I called the so called courier service YUP goes to this company. The game is one person tells you that they have court papers to serve you, but unless you call ( they give another number ) to get a " stop action , release " you will be served. But when I did some " pretend calling " to see what was going on its Johnson & Associates!! What a scam!! So I made some calls to some friends " in high places" and find out this company is owned by a Blake Johnson who has been involved with several other companies, all scams, and much to my surprise they are currently being investigated by the CFPB and FTC as well as several local and non local law enforcement agencies, and from what I am hearing wont be in business much longer. If you are one of the unlucky ones like me who is getting harassed by them, ignore it, their time is coming, threats and abusive collection tactics will get a company shut down and they are on the way, after looking more into this BLAKE JOHNSON THE OWNER, don't bother with asking for a supervisor for they just transfer you to another abusive collector pretending to be a manager. Beware the guy is under serious investigation both personally and business. Not a good person. I have since changed my number I suggest if you get a call from them immediatly complain to the CFPB ( who has a huge file on them already) complain to you state attorney office and if they threaten criminal go to your local police department and file a report but be sure to get names ( they use alias ) there says are numbered and this clown who owns this slop collection agency should get a conscious and run a real company for a change !! Report these guys the more of you that do the quicker they will be shut down

I was called at work, told the mediation was just for that business day and then proceeded to bully me-as I was among my co-workers, I felt I had no choice but to agree to their terms, but when I asked how the charge would appear on my statement - I did't get an answer.  I'm now trying to figure out what my options, if any are.  I understand I borrowed the money and I owe it.  She dropped the supposed amount from $1000+ down to $622-but said I had to pay it in 2 parts, and I want to pay it in 4.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

I received a call / message from a "Mr. Adams" with "Johnson & Associates" today regarding a recommendation (???).  Since I have no debts and due to the fact that I found the call and recorded message misleading, I reported the company to the following Government agency Consumer Finance Protection Bureau (CFPB) Web site address: <https://help.consumerfinance.gov>.  Once the complaint is recorded, the Web site displays a page that outlines 5 steps that will be taken by the agency including what to expect as a result of filing a claim.

Got a call from Mr. Lizaro (?) telling me I was being investigated for "fraud".  He was extremely rude. When I asked how I supposedly committed fraud, he said he couldn't release that information so I told him he could speak to my attorney and/or the police as I thought he is the fraud who should be investigated. The caller ID showed a bunch of numbers and letters and 877-684-7731 but when I called back, the recording said Johnson & Associates. I don't have any debts either old or new so I'm not scared but am more bothered by the fact they think they can play these games. I will follow up with a complaint to my state's Consumer Affairs Division. Caller ID showed two calls - the other number was 248-605-0146.  Same greeting when I called the number, Johnson & Associates.

Hi

Depending on the state this person might get some of their money back. The same thing happened to me. I was scammed into paying a agency that I thought was a law firm. They promised to send me a letter once the debt was paid. But once I did pay them off I never received a letter in the mail. I let it go until I received a letter from the Attorney General stating that they went after the agency and I was going to recieve a payment back. I did have to prove they took the money (I sent a copy of my bank statement showing their name). I did get a partial payment of the funds I sent to this illegal agency. I did noy get all my money back but it nice to know someone is going after these scumbags.

This company is really ridiculous from what I see here. They too have called me and said "I must be the stupidest criminal, and that they were going to contact my HR department at y job so I could be fired" this company really needs to be shut down for what they are doing. I have debt but the companies have been working with me legitimately from the actual place of business. They need to be stopped.

Sorry but your money is gone. Hopefully it was for a legit debt but I wouldn't count on it. Consider it one of life's many hard lessons my friend. In the future remember that the only person who can issue a warrant is a judge, and the only people trusted to execute warrants are law enforcement officers.

At best they are an aggressive collection agency working outside the law. Do not allow it to stress you out. I just got one from those knuckle heads today. Since you cant really do anything my advice is to try and have fun with them. It can be entertaining to listen to someone else get angry for nothing

These people are constantly calling me.  They first try my cell phone and if they do not get an answer they call my house phone.  According to my state if I owe a debt they have 5 days from contacting me to send out the paperwork to verify it.  I have told these people that I want a copy of the debt with my signature on it but of course they tell me I have to find that information.  I am talking to the police and lawyer to get this stopped.

A girl with a very plugged nose voice called my number stating that she was calling from Accelerated Servicing Group, which is no where on Google, but was also known as, Sinergy Recovery, LLC (notice the spelling of Sinergy) which is not a member of the BBB but has a grade of a B-.  She stated her name was April Horton who used a lot of legal terms that don't even apply in her otherwise horrible sentence structure.  She used terms such as "implications", "allegations", "review and prepare cases" (which illegal practicing businesses could and would never be able to do), "file cases, if need be", "her recommendation"  She provided two numbers to return 855-208-6717 and 855-208-3523.  This company is "affliated" with "The "Firm" of Johnston (Johnson) and Associates" who is opperating illegally and who have received a grade of "F" by the BBB.  Are being investigated by Federal Law Enforcement Authorities, The Federal Trade Commission, and several state consumer agencies as well.  They change their number as they use while calling you throughout the day, along with friends or family members they try to contact you thru, they yell, harass, and threaten.  The have a voicemail when you call that states that "if you've received a court summons".  Pretending to be a law firm.  Refuse to be recorded when you call them.  Call regarding old debits paid or not, focus on people with bad credit, senior citizens, and people who are uneducated regarding the Fair Debit Collection Practices Act.  Know the laws in your state regarding debit collection and debit collection practices.  They have to be able to provide you in written form validation of the debit and the original company the alleged debit stems from, not by phone, and not by email.  Some states and laws make it illegal for them to take the funds out of your bank account and how much interest they can charge.  Most pay day loan scams violate all of these laws and rules and regulations.  They will continue to call, do not answer, do not admit to any debit to these people, run your credit report, if you are in question to whom you have actual debits, verify them through your credit report, debit accounts bought and sold report on your credit report, most follow the law, do not call you at work, friends and or family looking for you, do not harass and threaten you and use scare tactics and pretend that they are law firms.
