Debt Collector
I keep getting a similar call from this number (877-684-7857) as well as other 866 and 877 numbers that all leave me a message that they are looking for a "Robyn King" who I have NEVER heard of and that it is in regards to check fraud or other bank issues that are connected to my WORK cell phone number. Being in social services, it is crucial my lines are open and that I answer every phone call. I called the numbers back and stated I have no clue who they are talking about and to take my number off the call list. One of the numbers was friendly about it and said that they took my number off, but all of the other numbers that leave the same (or similar) messages never answer and the phone just keeps ringing. It makes me have the suspicion that they may be possibly tracking the number in order to get more information about you. And, the fact that they said they took my number off my call list but are still calling me off of other similar numbers is messed up and very fishy. The voice message I received when I didn't answer from a similar number, 8773415323 claimed they are the office of Wysen Angenkowski? They have been hired to determine my involvement with a file number and I need to call the paralegal department back prior to litigation.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

This company is apparently called "WPM" - which may be an acronym for "Western Property Management."

The keep calling my place of business looking for someone who hasn't worked for me in over a decade.

When I told them to stop, the idiot operator first said "I am not making these calls."  Then I said, fine, but your company is and they need to stop.

Then she asked for my phone number.  I said my business had a ewhile bunch of them, and I was not about to list them all for her - I suggested they look up the file reference number they gave me and figure out who they were dialing and get them to stop.  She again repeated how she wasn't the one making the calls and started to yell at me, so I told her I would report her company to the FCC and look into suing them as well.

ignore these calls. if you were in that much trouble you would have more knowledge of the circumstances before you ever received a threatening call, and you should not receive threatening calls no matter the circumstances because you have consumer rights. if you look up the phone number, there is no track record for it. not even a professional track record. if you call the number, there is no professional greeting or recording about who they are when someone does not answer. even if there was one, you would still be entitled to proof of this so-called money that you owe and the accumulative fees for not paying on time. you would need much more proof of who they are, their business address and full name, etc. you have a right to see and know where your money is going. these people will go as far back into your background and find references of friends, work places and past debts to appear legitimate. however, they are not. again, ignore their calls especially if they are acting unprofessionally and using illegal means such as threats to gain your cooperation. based on what you are saying about a federal judge being involved, you would have already received papers and written legal notice well in advance of this phone call. but these people do not do that because they do not want to be traced or tracked down. with toll free numbers which anyone can purchase and with proclaiming to be able to send them through an e-mail (which is unprofessional), they can not be traced in these ways and it is impossible for law enforcement to do anything about it when it happens to you. all you can really do is report the number, report to the police or your local fbi agency and file a complaint. good luck to you and try not to stress out. these people contact hundreds of people every day. you are not the only one.

Hi,

Just got a call from them also. It is some rip-off place. I wasn't home so they left a voicemail.

I called back, the person who answered didn't provide a company name. I gave a woman the case number they left me. She looked up the info they had. It was information from when my identity was stolen. That had all been cleared up years ago.

I told her those were the result of identity theft and they were a "rip-off" company. She got mad, always the first sign your dealing with a fraudulent company, and said I was the "rip-off"... Whatever, that meant. Next, I told her this was all cleared up years ago, and everyone knows it. She said, "well, I didn't" and she hung up. Second sign of a company doing some type of fraud, they hang up on you.

A real company will tell you who they are and who they are representing. If you call them a rip-off company, they will continue to talk to you in a calm way and they will explain what they are trying to accomplish.

So, it is probably someone who purchased a list of some type. They are trying to scare the crap out of people with the hope some will pay something.

But, it does get your heart racing.....
