Non-profit Organization
Received call today saying they were calling on behalf of WAY-FM, which is a Christian radio station here in South Florida. They claimed to be starting a new internet radio ministry aimed at teens, and wanted to know if they could "count on my support". I've stopped listening to WAY-FM because of their non-stop fund-raising and pitiful lack of variety of music, as well as dogmatic and often unbiblical commercials. If WAY-FM really has sunk so low as to hire an agency to do bulk spam calling to all past donors, then I still wouldn't support them.

Enter you phone number here at their site for their do not call list.  Since they are non-profit fund raisers, they are exempt from the national DNC list.

"If you'd really like to make a difference please give directly to a Salvation Army unit near you, or drop some money into one of our Kettles."
Please answer several questions for me:
(1) I used to receive calls from the Salvation Army where the Caller ID actually read SALVATION ARMY.  If these callers are honest, why can't they still use the name of that time-honored organization instead of employing a tactic used by so many scammers?
(2)How could we (or even want to) "really make a difference" when all we hear is dead air--or a dial tone, at best?
(3)Please give us a WORKING CALL-BACK NUMBER to ask them (nicely) to stop repeatedly calling us this way. That's how a truly honest organization (and I hope the Salvation Army still is) would deal with consumers.
Looking forward to your response.

Scammers don't leave their CID info any more than their trolls in these forums can convince us of their legitimacy.  Ask your telemarketing thief boss for new talking points, moron.

Picked up the phone. Said they were the Salvation Army and wondered if we "would be willing to donate $100-$200?"...

Telemarketer
A call-back to this number elicits a recording that identifies the caller as MDS Communications --- "a telephone fundraising company specializing in raising money for [...] nationally recognized charities and other non-profit organizations," etc.  I imagine that, even though MDS Communications is making money on the arrangement, the fact that the calls are in behalf of of non-profits, they are exempt from Do Not Call List strictures.  The message sounds sincere and provides two options:  (1) Leave a number if you would like us to call you back (thanks, maybe next time) or (2) have your number removed from their call list.  Knowing full well the folly of such action but trusting in the abilities of our call blocker, I chose option 2.  We'll see what comes of it...

So sick of this, I'm only using this landline "for-outgoing-business-calls-only", so I know any incoming calls will only be telemarketers/scammers/etc.  Any other questionable IDs/#s are going to then get "Dead Air FROM ME" while I crank up my stereo ;)

This # called me at approx 5:20 pm, didn't answer it and they left no message.  Approx. 3 minutes later a number that came up as just "ringing" came up and I didn't answer, no message left.  Probably the same stupid idiots!  Tired of this crap!

Yes, this is from the Salvation Army. I am on the Advisory Board of one of the local community centers, that is why they have my number. However, these people are paid fund raisers. If you'd really like to make a difference, please give directly to a Salvation Army unit near you, or drop some money into one of our Kettles.

Merry Christmas, and God Bless.

Jeff,
I personally know a company who uses MDS, that's why I said IF they acknowledge they are with MDS then please remember to be kind. I'm not saying give money to them, I'm saying they are people doing a job in a market and world where scammers have made people instantly suspicious. I did say originally if you don't feel comfortable giving then call the organization directly. I'm not saying to not be cautious but I guess people are going to respond however rudely they want to, guess I was just trying to appeal to people's humanity. My bad!

"...just doing their job." Which is, of course, to scam you. It is never a good idea to give money to someone who calls you. Insist that you will only donate money to a cause if you initiate the contact.

Received two calls from this number asking for Rowena Jones the past two days.  Each time they say they will make a note that there is no such person at my number.  Caller ID displays Toll Free Number, I think they are just trying to get people to call them back for a sales pitch.

If they state they are from MDS which is a call center who makes calls typically on behalf of non-profits then please don't assume they are scammers. If you feel uncomfortable contact the organization directly. In this day and age it's easy to assume the worst because of all the scams out there but in case it is legit remember there is a human being on the other end of the line potentially just doing their job.

This number has called 6 times this morning.  All the calls were within 5 minutes of each other.  When answered there is no message.  They leave no messages ---they just keep calling.  It is extremely irritating especially since my health makes it difficult to get any rest with all their calls.    They have been calling for the past 3-4 days.  There should be something done about these calls.  Unfortunately no-one seems to be able to do anything.  Criminals always know a way to get around the legal way of doing business.  Their brains are not wired for doing anything good - just scammers and gross irritants.  Am I upset ---YOU BET!!!

I have been receiving one call every twelve hours from this number.  It rings four times and then hangs up.  On the caller ID it reads 'Unknown".  I do not answer these types of calls, as they might end up being scams or telemarketers or some service for a celebrity that I am not.  It is just irritating that I get these types of calls.

I received a couple of calls from this number (1 a day it seems). At first I did not answer, the next time I did. There was no response, which makes me think it is an automated dialing service. I did not wait for someone to come on the line.

They called today asking for hubby, but would not leave a message..."We'll just try again another time," she said.  An hour later, I simply dialed the number back (877-710-8851) and found that it is a call-center soliciting donations for Salvation Army.  The kind woman I spoke with could see our data on her screen because I called from my home number.  She asked if she could just mail out donation materials to us, thus putting an end to the calls.  Since we have donated to Salvation Army in the past, and since she was able to read off our name and address without asking me for it, I believe this call was legitimate and was indeed from the Salvation Army's donation solicitations center.

I seem to be all of a sudden getting lots on numbers that don't leave a message. Some of them claim to want money. And then my Internet goes down . I am reading insurance papers. Is this a scam too?
