I just started getting calls from the same number.  3 in a matter of 5 minutes, left a message on the final call.  Guy sounds like he is calling from a cell phone while driving in his car.  Said his name is Avery Davis (I think), could not understand the name of the firm he claimed to be from.  ASI possibly?  Said my name and social is associated with a case, etc.  It has to be a scam.  I don't have any unpaid debts in collection and a credit score close to 800.

They've been calling me at least once a day for about a week. They leave automated messages telling me I need to call today to give a statement regarding a "serious matter placed with our office." They say it involves collecting on a debt and give a case number which is different every single call. They are also calling from a different number with the exact same message. The daily calls are getting obnoxious. I have zero delinquent debt, so I know this is not a legit call.

I can understand how it can turn into a hobby now that I'm retired. Never had a payday loan, never will, and like one of the other posters it is a potential source of a retirement income at their expense, but alas they only left a one ring hang up call on my home phone today 12 May @ 1:53pm. They really don't want to threaten me with their BS because I like getting free money from these scumbags!

These low life bottom feeders use so many numbers, change their names, spoof ID numbers on phones, and never give their real name. This is a clue that they ARE NOT LEGIT!  Like the Lawyer who signed in and reported, DO NOT GIVE THESE PEOPLE ANYTHING!  Here's the lay of the land as they say, I work in the court system so I will go thru this for you .

First they are calling because they say they can not find you, or want you to verify who you are. Ok they called you, they claim they know the person who owes this debt, but yet they need to verify? They need your statement? Only police can ask for your statement, and that's only if your involved in a crime. PAY ATTENTIION:  The sheriff, will NEVER, EVER call you to tell you they are coming. They live to work on the element of surprise. Plus if your township, county etc, wants you, they already know where you are, so sit tight.

Second, and most important, NEVER CALL these low life bottom feeders back.  Because truth be known they don't care who they talk to as long as they can get money from someone. It doesn't even have to be the right person. If you call them back then they know that they have a real tangible working phone number that they can call to harass you all the time of day and night.  Just ignore the call, or better yet, tag them as a spam call in your phone, and you'll never even see them ring it.

Third, these people function and live on the *Fear factor* they will say anything,  tell you anything to get you to give them the money thru your checking account, debit card or credit card.  Many people get scammed this way. I've heard : coming to your workplace to arrest you, serving you in the morning if you don't call by a certain time, attaching your salary, etc, etc, this is all nothing but a CRAP scare tactic.

Fourth, in most states payday loans are ILLEGAL as they charge obnoxious interest, and states are trying desperately to control that.  Since I'm not sure of what state anyone is in, I cannot site them all here, but if you go to your states attorney general page, you should be able to look up the laws, again I will add these types are loans are ILLEGIAL. Illegial to do, collect on etc, etc.

Fifth, I know it sounds nice to send them a letter or report them, but this is a futile. They have got this to a science.  With all that is going on in court system they know they have time on their side.  Not enough of these low life bottom feeders get caught and prosecuted, if they did...they wouldn't still be in business, but they are, thousands of them.

Lastly, anyone who posts that you are scum or a deadbeat PAY YOUR BILLS , OR OMG  they came to my place of work and arrested me, are full of crap and are just trying to SCARE you, SEE MY THIRD NOTE Above, Fear factor.

Best thing to do in this case, especially with these people is TO IGNORE. Eventually when no one engages with them they will go away to torment someone else.

Hope this helps you all out.

One who knows.

Doubtful. You can only be served  by the sheriff and he doesn't call to let you know hes coming. And, in most states payday loans are ILLEGIAL. You obviously work for these low life bottom feeders.

No, jw, I haven't,  but it's a sure bet those are scams. Court clerks notify via the mail, and usually it is certified mail. Those emails you are getting purporting to be from out of state courts likely originate out of the country, most likely India.

Right! Yesterday you said that call was my final notice! Looks like you are starting over again from the start today. Apparently these nuts can't keep track of their scam calls! If these scammers think I'm going to fall for their scam, they are looney!

Where do I start...These are third party collectors that purchase old data files.  Payday loan companies are the worst for selling information followed by fake student loan, car sales, and refi sites,  Their data is never accurate but they don't care about that.  They operate on fear tactics which any legitimate collector would not do.  They do not identify their company, provide written debt validation, or follow the debt collection laws. They spoof their numbers to avoid detection for they would be sued if people knew their true location and company name.  They imply you are breaking the law and threaten legal proceedings when in fact they are.  They will also try to have you connect to an 800 type number to settle and you must pay by phone.  Never do that... They do have a lot of your information which is a problem.  If they have your phone number, they have your address too, even though they state they are trying to locate you.  If they didn't play that game, they couldn't use the fake process server scam.

How to handle these low life's if it's unbearable...
FIRST - request a phone trap from you phone company.  Just tell them your situation and they will help you since it's harassment.  .  This will identify the real phone information even if they are using VoIP lines or spoofed caller ID's.  Second - press *67 on your land-line to block all private calls with no caller ID data.  This way, when they spoof their caller ID, the phone trap does it's job.  They will do this and call, they're too stupid.  I have had success locating who's paying the phone bills for these guys.  Many are individuals and not large firms and they use cell phones with blocked id's.  Another tactic is they use a PO box for mail.  THIRD-Ask them for the 911 address, good luck getting that.  They don't want you having their info or sending stop calling letters.  FORTH - Inform them you are recording the call for future reference.  They won't like that.  There option is to continue or hangup.  FIFTH -The FTC compiles a file of complaints, they usually do not act on individual complaints, but mass complaints about the same number/company etc.  Finally, there is new wonderful software available for IP phones that can track them back to the central office of origin/switch.  Once you get that, it's easier for us to nail down the Lata and prefix data.

Remember, your data has been sold to multiple sites/people and is being resold over and over so the calls will continue from a variety of scammers.  Sometimes using different approaches and tactics.  Fake process servers, fake law firms, fale law enforcement calls. the list goes on.  A real collector will want you to get in touch with them and will follow the rules.
Once you determine it's a scam and not a real collector, have fun with them.  Ask for a number to call them back in 15 minutes.  (not an 800 number)  When they refuse, and they will, state, until I receive a validation letter, I'm not doing anything else or providing any information.  Just keep to that statement over and over until they hang up. good luck

Sorry for the lengthy reply.. but I love investigating these gusys.. it's now a hobby.

Vera, the BBB is the last place on the list to file complaints for FDCPA/TCPA violations. The FTC & CFB has more teeth along with a good FDCPA/TCPA attorney.
