These schmucks asked for the same FAKE name I gave to get the "diabetic supplies" telemarketer scammers to make it easy to identify them when they call again (they always do). Those jerks always wanted to know my Medicare number (which is the same as your Social Security number). I'm betting they're both the same bunch of thieves.

Try this: Tell them that person has a new phone number, then give them your local US Congressman's local office phone number (I keep it by the phone). Also, give them Richard Nixon's Social Security number (just Google both numbers).

They call pretty much daily, but never leave a message.  It's probably a debt collector since I get a number of daily calls from at least 3 different debt collection agencies looking for different people who share the same, fairly common, last name as mine.

I just got home from work to find this number and a message on my caller ID. We are calling for ****
If you are not *** please disconnect. By not disconnecting you acknowledge your are ***.. Am I the only one who see's the stupidity of this call. First clue is you got an answering machine so maybe people are at work kids at school ect ect so how can I disconnect a call when I am not there to take it. Seriously are they kidding me?  The person they are looking for doesnt live here all they have to do is a reverse directory or google the phone number to see that. I guess common sense isnt a requirement to get a college degree.

I got a phone call from this number on my personal cell phone looking for some name I didn't recognize. I told them that it was a wrong number.  Not 5 minutes later, the same number called me up on my work land line.  As soon as I picked up and said hello, they hung up.  I guess it has to do with the fact that they are looking for someone male and I happen to be female.  I also get a ton of "800 service" calls at home.  I never checked the phone number but it'll be interesting to see if it is from the same number.

I got a call from this number. I actually answered and they asked for some girl who I don't know. I said they had the wrong number and that I've had this line for 5 years and no one by that name has had it. They're like well we have called this number in the past 6 months and left messages how do you explain that?! They were soooo rude to me and kept insisting I was a liar. I'm glad I don't owe them money and I don't blame whoever that girl is for giving the wrong number!!!

Said they had an urgent matter but didn't say what and did not state who the call was for also very difficult to understand.  We have seen "800 Service" on our Call ID for months now.

Do not fall for the tactics used by this company. Yes this is indeed "Mercantile" (they use the short name for tactical reasons. Do not call them. You either owe money or not. They leave you a reference number. ADVICE: Google search exactly the following, quotes included: ["Request For Validation" template]. Come up with some RFV letter and send this to them via certified mail (DO NOT SIGN YOUR NAME ON THE LETTER-just type it in the letter). Find out what you owe and if you owe. If you do not owe money and it is indeed a mistake, then usually they will stop. NEW TACTIC for Mercantile: they leave a message stating "...we are assuming you are represented by legal counsel, call us and provide his/her information...” They do not mention "this is an effort to collect a debt". Rather they make it sound as though it is a criminal charge. Of course, they are using whatever methods "allowed" by the regulatory agencies of the particular state they work out of (or the state to which they are calling). Yet they seem to always push things too far until they are told to stop. Cheap tactics are understandable in this industry (how else will they get you to call back?), yet I think there should be tighter boundaries regarding what they can say. As such, dealing with them in writing is best. This entire debt collection process falls within gray area: people DO owe money and collectors DO want to be repaid. Some people simply cannot afford to pay and this is due to many circumstances which may be beyond their control. The problem is that the collection agents make a living from payments for debts. The incentive structure is clear-collect as many payments as possible. Unfortunately, these agents treat everyone the same way and with whatever tactic they can think of. They will never know someone’s “true” ability to pay. They treat everyone the same way. I can see both sides of the argument. It should not be the case, however, that they can say/call whatever/whomever they want. Generally the strategy is to get away with whatever they can and move on (I was an agent for two years). If penalized for unruly tactics, they stand little to lose. The company they work for does, however. The easiest way is to take the emotions out of the equation and deal with it on a mathematical basis that incorporates someone’s willingness and ability to pay. In most cases there is more than one creditor to pay and whoever barks the loudest gets paid sooner. Emotionally, it is easier to have an objective third part deal with this. If you have any intent to repay debts (actually owed), it is best to hire some agency to deal with them-otherwise you will have to endure psychological tactics that are unsettling. There are credible agencies that can handle this and save you money as well as spare you the invective that will be launched against you as a debtor. I do not know of any credible third-part firms that deal with these yet I am sure they exist. That is another topic….-BarlowESQ

If they are harassing you as they did with me, call them back and leave a message that you can be reached at the following number.  Then give them a phone number for your local jail or a phone number like that.  Waist their time as much as you can.  Call them back and leave a message asking them to meet you at a local bar.  Use your imagination.

Every time they call you, you call them back and give them a new contact number.  Make life more fun for them.

First of all, I do not own them any money.  They are trying to reach someone from Guatemala.  I know someone from there and they have had money problems, but it is not me they need to talk to and it is not my job to help Mercantile find them.

Because of Mercantile’s harassment of me and their intentional abuse of my phone number, I would like to suggest some ways for people like me who have been caught up in Mercantile’s sick web to turn the tables on them.

The following information offer steps you can take!

Step one would be call your phone company and have them block incoming calls from (877) 764-3252.  This can be done if you insist.

Step two would be to change your phone number.  Sounds harsh, but problem solved.  Just don’t give this phone number out to anyone.

Step three is a great approach for dealing with collectors like above.  If you have a user account set up with your phone company for your home phone, you have got it made.

Start by going to your account and look for something like account settings and or incoming calls.  Check both out by looking for words like Unwanted phone calls.  Providers are all different, so I don’t know how to tell you what to look for.  But in the end it is real simple.

When you have found the right place, this is what you want to do.  Locate a phone number of some business you don’t like.  This could be the phone number of another collection agency or your local garbage collection company.  You could fine a number for your state or federal agency for reporting abusive phone calls.  You can even use Mercantile’s own phone number.

Use call forwarding under unwanted phone calls.  Type in the phone number you have chosen as the number where you want these unwanted calls forwarded to.  Then enter Mercantile’s phone number as one number that you want to forward.

If you use the mercantile number for example, every time they attempt to call you, they will only succeed in calling themselves.

If Mercantile decides to use a new phone number, just do the same thing again and you will never have to listen to them again.  Have fun.

Caller identified herself only as "Bank of America" (funny name for a PERSON and a CALL CENTER that answers their own line as "Mercantile Adjustment Bureau") and when told that financial queries are only answered via POSTAL MAIL, said "We'll just have the judgement filed, then," and hung up.  Typical collection agent FRAUD.

In the state of California you have the right to "fire" a collection agency. When they call you, you just have to say, "You're fired, do not call me again" and then deal directly with the company you owe the debt to, not some pushy, rude collection agent.
