Hi I get these call every three months and these b*****ds are ruthless. But lately I've been the one asking all the questions and they get so annoyed with me that they can't answer and get mad with me.  I get po boxes instead of a street address and a fake lawyer in Baltimore, md. I'm in maryland so I called the bar association and they didn't even have a lawyer registered under the name they gave me. I wish they stop calling my job and crawl in a hole!!

These people operate illegally and use illegal collection practices! Come on people! I'd think Americans would learn eventually, but they never do!! Learn ur rights, read the FDCPA laws, and sue them!! If you guys still don't understand te plain and clear English used to write the laws, then message me, I'll gladly help you call and get them back! And plus you can make some free money! The economy is tough right now, people are strapped for cash, yet so many people don't even realize there's a gold mine awaiting you if you receive calls from these illegal collectors and if you only know the law!! Come on people!

I'm guessing you are Michael Demitri! I had some moron calling me from this company, forgot the name but sounded made up. It was for this stupid loan thing from awhile ago my ex took out in my name. They call themselves ACS and sometimes BMG, but they break so many FDCPA laws that I cannot wait till the next time they call me!! I will be ready and recording their next call to me. This loser disclosed my private information to several of my relatives and told him I was facing legal actions, he did not give me the mini-Miranda "This is a communication from a debt collector..." which by law, they HAVE to tell you EVERY time they call you. He threatened me with criminal charges, which is another very serious FDCPA violation. They then never sent me written notice of the debt within 5 days of the first call, which is required by law. They had called my work, which is illegal in my state (Maryland) and disclosed information regarding this debt to coworkers of mine. When he first called me, he stated ACS is a mediation company, which is what these illegal collectors often say to deceive people. I then asked if they are a collection agency, and this guy was stupid enough to say no! This place SHOCKED me on how many laws they broke just in one phone call!!! I was polite on the phone, and just let him keep talking and violating more and more laws. Told them I was busy at the time and to call me later. So now I'm just waiting for their call. I contacted a family friend who is an attorney who sues they people for a living. I'll let you know what happens ;)

I seriously suggest EVERYONE who is reading this and has been contacted by them, or any other illegal collectors, to do the same thing! They are breaking the law and these illegal collectors, who threaten and scare people into paying and other scams, need to be STOPPED for good! If anyone has any questions or needs help fighting back to protect their rights guaranteed by the FDCPA, feel free to comment back. I've been connecting with and sharing experiences with people across the country to raise awareness and to protect our rights!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:
Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.

Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.

Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.

Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.

Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.>
