Has called a number of times to request info on my "business"--I am on the DO NOT CALL registry, but that's no deterrent.
I hang up on them or don't answer anymore.

Thank goodness for 'nomorobo'!!!  Calls like this only ring once before getting shut off.  Since I have signed up for this FREE service over a month ago, I have not received a single 'robo' call.
I also have a strict rull of thumb; if I do not recognize the number, I do not answer.  If it is important (or ligit), the caller will then leave a message.

We are a Public School District. When answered, the call from 877-778-9218 has an automated "thank you" and hangs up. I called it back and was told this is a data verification company that verifies numbers are still working business phone numbers. So not only did I waste my company time answering in the 1st place, the District can now expect additional calls from the companies that this data verification company services!

My husband received a call from this number today on his cell phone.  They left a voice mail but when we went to retrieve the message all the call said was "Thank you" as some of the other responses indicate.  I read through some of the other comments and some people indicated that when they actually spoke to a live representative that they were told the caller was calling on behalf of Equifax.  I find it completely unbelievable that anyone from Equifax would have any reason to call personally to verify any sort of information since they are a credit bureau and their primary purpose (in my opinion) would be to make updates to one's credit report.  In my more than 49 years of living, I have never once had a representative call me from Equifax when changes were being made (either positive or negative) to my credit report to verify that any of the information they had received was in fact correct.  So I find it completely unbelievable that they would start now.  This whole phone number / call situation seems like a complete scam and someone is up to no good.  And they somehow think that there are people in the 21st century stupid enough to fall for this and provide any sort of personal or financial information to a complete stranger over the phone.  Ridiculous!  If you are going to try to pull off a scam you had better get a bit more creative and come up with a more plausible background for your story.

Just like everyone else, I let this go to VM and the "thank you" message was left. I look up the number, find that it is a Scam and label it in my contacts as such. When they call again I whisper, "What's that? You say you want to assassinate President Barack Obama?" Maybe the NSA can do the job the FTC has failed at.

Caller just leaves the message "thank you ". Now when I answer these callers I whisper "What? You want to assassinate President Barack Obama?" Hopefully the NSA will become more interested this way since the DNC list was a profound failure.

I just got the same call. I pressed 3 and when a lady answered I asked who she was. She immediately hung up on me. Its probably the type of company that posts your info on the internet then charges you to "update/remove" it.  Just report the number here:

I normally don't pick up calls from a toll free number, but sometimes they are legitimate calls.  After I picked up, an automated voice simply said "Thank-you" and the call terminated. I blocked it in my contact list so calls from this number will go straight to voicemail next time.

YOU NEED TO BE CAREFUL TALKING TO THESE PEOPLE CALLING ABOUT VERIFYING PERSONAL & BUSINESS INFO FOR THE ONLINE YELLOW PAGES. THEY GENERALLY ARE INDIANS FROM CALL CENTERS IN INDIA, AND THEY ARE RECORDING THE CONVERSATIONS. THEY ASK YOU QUESTIONS TO GET YOU TO ANSWER "YES" AND "NO" AND ARE EDITING THE CONVERSATIONS INTO SOUNDBITES, SELLING YOU NOTHING, AND EITHER SOMEWAY CHARGING YOUR CREDIT CARDS FOR THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS OR ADDING THE CHARGES TO YOUR TELEPHONE BILLS. THEY CAN PRODUCE RECORDINGS OF YOU ANSWERING YES TO THE OWN SCRIPTS AND YOU'LL PLAY HELL GETTING YOUR CC COMPANIES TO REMOVE THE CHARGES. A HUGE SCAM & OR GROUP OF SCAMS...............

Yesterday I missed an apparently unwanted call. I'm glad I did NOW after reading all of the other experiences here. Because of my outgoing pre-programed voice message, some automated messages will start recording when the call picks up. That did not happen with this call, but it began mainly by wanting confirmation of my business address & phone number for (insert business name here). There was also the mention of pressing '3' to speak to a representative.

First off, my landline home phone previously was my business phone number. Even at one point to get listed in our local yellow pages I had my home number converted into a business number (so they could charge more.) After 10 years I slowly fazed out of business, however keeping an active trade name with the Secretary of State office in case I decided later down the road to start up again. That did not happen. I returned my landline back into a regular phone line status again to keep our original number. After 20 years since I'd began my business I decided not to renew the trade name again. It was removed from the search function on the Secretary of State Office website. After all of these years in & out of the business I'm STILL listed all over the internet!!!! Most of these listings were not requested by me. Anyone who wants to create directories to drive business to their website can steal info from another site. Contacting everyone who lists my number would take too much time & a lot of frustration! It would've been easier to get a new number but my husband & I want to keep the landline number we've had for 24 years. I decided to answer the infrequent calls only if I felt like it, because I screen all of my calls. Most won't leave a message because the outgoing message no longer refers to the business anyway.

At this point I'm thinking that these scammers have collected data from the internet & may be updating it for their own personal gain &/or perhaps might even be reselling it....

We just received the same automated message as all the above. Caller ID showed "Toll Free." Message left on our voice mail did not indicate who was calling, only that they wanted confirm our business name and address. What is curious is that we do not have a business line (neither cell or landline) - only our home phone. They called our home phone (which is publicly listed) to confirm the business name and address. While we do have a non-profit listed with IRS using our home address, we do not advertise the organizational name, address or phone number. However, Google Maps does show our organizations name on its map and shows our home address. Thanks Google Maps (argh)!!!! >:|

Received a call on my voice-mail from 877-778-9218 this morning, 2/18/2014. Automated call wanting to confirm our business name and address or to speak with a representative. After reading the posts above, I see that it is clearly not a legitimate company.

Computer-automated message tried to verify business information. Pressed 3 to speak to rep. Demanded to know who was calling. Rep's answer was unintelligible, but she kept saying that her company works on behalf of the Yellow Pages. An obvious lie, as Yellow Pages does not cold call random businesses for inclusion in their paid directory!  I told them their info is wrong, then hung up. They called back the next business day. Have now blocked this caller.  Probably just telemarketing; possibly a scam with the intent to commit identity theft.  Definitely shady and unsavory.  Based on rep's accent, caller is not located within the US.

The recorded message asked to confirm that my personal unlisted do-not-call-registered phone number was the correct number for a social group I belong to.  The only way they could have associated my number with this group was to have gotten hold of our internal directory.  Very disturbing.  I got hot as well and asked for a supervisor.  The woman said she would connect me and then.....nothing.
