I thought they might be trying to collect money. The amount in the letter they sent me is the EXACT total of a loan from over 10 years ago. I had previously explained I did not owe it, I had an attorney look into it and he verified they could not collect from me. They could not even provide proof I owed it. SNEAKY SNAKE!

I can't believe all of the inane comments I just read. You receive a solicitation from a company which spent the time and resources to contact you about money you will lose if you do nothing. You speculate on the source and call them a rip-off or more. You discover the source and then do it yourself without a simple thank you to the company which spent the money to try to help you in the first place. Had you done nothing you would have continued to lose money each and every year. Pathetic.

My step dad received a post card from them and since he does not understand much english the rep talked him into signing some documents. He was also talked into providing his vehicle registration information. This is a total scam, I have verified through the BBB and the harris county appraisal district. It is said that this company is a scam, be aware!

I think this must what it is, a zombie debt collector who's trying to collect an old debt or debts you've forgotten or co-signed. I've checked out the Texas site for unclaimed funds and don't have any funds to claim.

If anyone fell for it, PLEASE file a complaint with the BBB for all three of her companies! Somehow she maintains a B rating but is continually deceiving people.

Here's your lady running this operation... http://www.houstonpress.com/2000-04-06/news/officials-probe-refund-collector/ . This article is from 2000, and Karyn A. Ward is still in operation 12 years later!! Plus, she is operating under several different company names. Karyn A. Ward CPA, Asset Recovery Bureau, and Refund Advisory Corp. It seems that once she accumulates too many negative online reviews that she switches company names and 800 numbers.

DO NOT CALL OR RESPOND TO THE LETTER! It is in regard to your HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION that you may qualify for. Simply go online to your county's tax appraisers website and fill out the exemption form OR visit your county's tax appraisers office. It is super easy to do it yourself! You will save yourself thousands of dollars!

We have received letters and postcards from this company and not sure if it is illegal, it is certainly a High Price to pay for recovering your own money.  Now that we know it is about Property Taxes, we will file.  We called the Tax Assessor's Office and they said the deadline to file for the refund is January 31st so we will go to the Tax Assessor's Office very soon.
These people are a RIP-OFF, if the owner or owners haven't gone to jail, maybe they will soon.  New term for them: RIP-OFF ARTISTS!!

Texas Property Code Sec. 74.507.  FEE FOR RECOVERY.  (a)  A person who informs a potential claimant that the claimant may be entitled to claim property that is reportable to the comptroller under this chapter, that has been reported to the comptroller, or that is in the possession of the comptroller may not contract for or receive from the claimant for services an amount that exceeds 10 percent of the value of the property recovered.

How do you get around this statute?  Or is what you are doing illegal?

I have been tracking this company for some time and they change company name often, so people can't find them after they are scammed or overcharged.  I found this is about YOUR PROPERTY TAXES called "A HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION."
Call your Tax Assessor's Office and tell them you'll like a HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION on your property.
I found other names for this company with same address:  Refund Advisory Corp., Karyn A Ward CPA (owner), Refund Department & Asset Recovery Bureau.  They will do work that can be done for free, charge people half the money that they are owed and when homeowner gets credited on their taxes, the company sends COLLECTION BILLS to their clients.  This is what happened to a neighbor of mine that got this.
I talked to lady that was RUDE on the phone and I heard they will demand and send collection agencies after the people they helped. Their customers usually don't get checks from tax assessor's office, they only get a credit on their taxes the next year.  CONSUMER BEWARE!!!  SCAM!!

I too did receive the same letter stating that I have a refund due to me from a couple of public agencies. I feel like this if you found money for, you have my address,...why not just send the check in the mail like you send the notice. They state that it is a deadline by the state I live in, I received this same letter a year ago. Now what!!!

I received the same letter in the mail.  I am highly skeptical.  Could not find much online on this company. I did find this :

Just wanted to share this link.  It does not mean that they are not legit, but it does add to my skepticism.

Let me get this straight. You received a solicitation to help you find money for which you are unaware. You assume its a scam and go as far as to complain to a state agency, yet you do not know what you do not know. You have to consider which party is actually harming the other.

i received the same type of post card stating I had overpaid some state agency 4,588.00 and they would tell me which one if I agreed to sign over half of that amount to them.  I asked the rep if she was smoking crack... she replied "not today" (that I beleive).  I promptly called the TX attorney general's office, then the State Comptroller's office.  No one knew what it was, but advised me to go to the TX Unclaimed Property website and do a search on myself to see if I had any unclaimed property. (just google it)
Turns out I had an old bank account with $82.00 in it and I can claim it for free on the website by completing the downloaded doc and mailing it in.  :)   The TX Comptroller's Office said it sounded like a scam and asked me to email a photocopy of the postcard (front & back) to the Attorney General's office to and file a complaint against them.  Will do that this week.

I actually cannot believe this since after research I know I have only $300 plus funds that I did not know I had.

This number evidently belongs to Asset Recovery Bureau in Houston, TX.  They sent a postcard indicating that I have "overpaid one or more state agencies" and "for a fee they will collect those funds and return them to me".

Would not give any further information unless I scheduled an appointment with them to sign paperwork authorizing them to recover my money.

Cannot locate ANYTHING on this company in the state of texas at all.
