They just called me about a debt from 1999.  He started off by saying he is in the pre-legal dept and I need to take care of this.  I laughed and told him it is well past the SOL and don't call again.  Then he started saying I am wrong and there is no SOL and they can do what they want.  They called using spoofing technology so that it showed up as a local PA number which I believe is illegal.

From other postings, it seems that National Recovery Group or NR Group has changed their name to "The Law Office of Scott Wheat," in what may be an attempt to trick people into believing that the people placing the calls are lawyers, which would be a serious FDCPA violation.  In various 800notes postings, people have stated than these debt collectors announce that they are calling "from the Law Office of Scott Wheat."  This may falsely implies they are lawyers or that perhaps they are working for a lawyer.  When questioned whether they were an attorney or not, they have referred to themselves as "litigators."  This may falsely implies that they are someone who practices law.

It appears that NR Group or National Recovery Group may have reincorporated themselves once again.  If it's like their last three re-births, they are running from lawsuits by changing their name.

I hope to raise this issue when I next meet with the New York AG.

More BS tactics from NR group.  At least they didn't say that they are about to submit legal documents in your county unless you call back, which is what they have done in the past to other people.  The "render a decision statement" is pure cr#p because they are trying to pretend like they are some sort of lawyer, or judge, or, as they fancy themselves, "litigators."  There is almost a certain chance they are just phishing for someone with the same or similar name to someone as your husband that is attached to an ancient debt.  If given the chance they will do what they can to stick your husband with the debt.  Best NOT to return their calls, unless you or your husband enjoy being screamed at.  Most unprofessional from my experience.

You should report them to the NY Attorney General and FTC.  Keep records and make recordings of their harassment action.  NY Attorney General has been eating these criminal debt collectors for lunch.  Most are located in the Buffalo, NY, region, which has become a mecca for this type of crime.  The company that called you is one of the firms presently being targeted by the AG and FTC.  They are just criminals who are phishing for innocent victims.  Also, search on "debt collectors dateline" on youtube.com for a news report on the illegal tactics that these criminals use.

I keep getting calls for my daughter on a debt that she settled several years ago.  They are rude and threatening.  I have told them that they need to send my daughter a letter stating what they want and they refused, they told me since I was her mother that it was up to me to contact her and make her call them.  I also told them to remove my cell phone number and to quit calling, and that has not happened either.  Does anybody know who I can report them to?

These fuxkers have called me for the past year and a half about some case that's not even me. What dicks! I've obviously haven't picked up for a reason, so why don't you collectors go suck a bag of dicks you jagaloons

- Did you feel harm, duress, or lose sleep as a result of the calls?

- Were the calls threatening or did the caller imply or state that the call was from an attorney, that a summons for your appearance in court had been issued, that papers had been filed, or that papers would be filed if you did not call back immediately.  

- Did you keep copies of he voice messages they left?  

If so, you may be be able to sue under the FDCPA ($500 per incident) and TCPA ($1000 for each violation) plus compensation for the harm that this has caused you.  Even though you are not Kenneth Hanna, they were possibly harassing you at your telephone number using unlawful tactics.

Keep any recordings you have and make exact recordings of the messages they left, along with caller ID info.  You might also take a video of the applicable caller IDs and then play the recordings so that everything is captured as evidence of what happened to you.  

Consider filing complaints with the FCC and NY AG if the callers made any statements prohibited by FDCPA and TCPA.  

Our experience with the NY collection agencies is that they may call you back again or send you papers, possibly trying to force you to pay a debt you do not owe.  Remember, it wasn't an accident that they called your number in the first place thinking or hoping it was Kenneth Hanna.  It doesn't help that NY debt collection is famous for sham due process and falsified documents. If they call again and you feel threatened, contact an attorney.  You could make some money and possibly deter this from happening to other innocent people.

10/28/09 12:22pm - lateset message. they have called several times, not for me, or anyone i know. there is no way to tell them they have the wrong number, it sounds like a recording, i've stopped answering and they leave voice mails every day! they ask for Kennith Hanna and refer to case #109993. Now saying it warrents his immediate attention because they have not heard back from him. The voice mail today sounded like a real man, not a recording.

This is a debt collector who attempts to recovery payment on ancient debts that have been written off as uncollectable, have been settled in bankruptcy court, or are beyond the statute of limitations.  They buy these old debts for cents on the $100 and then try to intimidate someone, anyone, to pay, whether they owe the money or not.  Many of the people involved in this are felons who have access to our most personal information.

This company is presently the subject of a New York AG investigation, along with other shakedown firms in the Buffalo, NY, area for unlawful debt collection practices.  On youtube.com, search on the words, Dateline and Debt Collector.  You will see what's going on in Buffalo.  There is a 10 part series from one of the episodes of Dateline.  

AG Cuomo of NY is trying to clamp down on outfits like this but the debt collectors look at lawsuits as just the cost of doing business since few people understand that they can sue for significant damages.  Pleasantly, judges and courts are catching on to these unlawful tactics and are readily awarding significant compensation, including payment for suffering and distress.  (I believe if I were the target, I would personally sue or take other lawful actions against the firm AND the individual debt collector making the calls.)

Latest news is that AG Cuomo is now arresting the people working the phones.  (In the past, the companies just received a fine or were shut down, but the people -- the voices behind the calls who threatened violence, rape, arrest, etc. -- went scott free.  Usually they would just go down they street to work for another shakedown company.)  According to AG Cuomo, "Saying, 'I was just doing my job', will no longer be taken as an excuse for breaking the law."

Received a call on my phone for my husband.

"Hey Xxxxx, this is Tony from the NR Group.  I need to speak to Xxxx or his representing attorney.  My number is 1-877-847-6681 x118.  I need to speak to him as I need to render a decision on his behalf."

Received another call from this number looking for my son. Same person, same extension. When told that the number they were calling from did not Google to any legitimate businesses, she replied that they were a legitimate debt recovery service.

I called the number, different from this one, on the website and the man answering confirmed that 877-847-6681 was one of the numbers they use.

Message on our phone, with our son's name. Googled number and found this site. No legitimate businesses tied to number. Google of business name in message returned some legitimate companies, but none with this phone number.
