Your son needs to do the following:

In writing, by certified mail, return receipt requested, demand a validation letter.

Once you have that information is in hand, write disputing the debt.  I hope you did a police report about the identity theft?  If so, mention that a police report was made at the time, but I probably wouldn't include it.  Advise them that they are to cease any further communications, and that if appropriate, you will handle the matter with the original creditor.

Familiarize yourself with the applicable law: <http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpajump.shtm>

The contact info you need is:

Changing numbers will just get you a new set of tormentors (that is why the last guy got rid of your "new" number).  Better to keep your old number and solve the problems.

This caller is a collection agency.  I have no idea if they are legitimately operated or one of a million scofflaw operations, so I will leave it to you to figure that out.

First, here is there contact information.  You will need that so you can contact them by way of Certified Mail, Return Receipt Requested.  But keep reading.

Familiarize yourself with the applicable law: <http://www.ftc.gov/os/statutes/fdcpajump.shtm>

The first thing you should do is insist that they send you a validation letter.  This will help you determine if the debt is legitimate, and they are authorized to collect it. (Even if they are, you can probably still pay the original creditor if you prefer.)

You may then wish to follow up with a "cease and desist" or "drop dead" letter.  However, be aware that in so doing, you are ending communications, so if you have a large, legitimate debt, be careful about this option.  It is also possible instead to advise them to cease telephone communication, and communicate only in writing.

Be wary of paying debt which is beyond the statute of limitations, discharged in bankruptcy, not valid (accounting errors, etc.), the debt of another, or otherwise not collectable.  Paying such debt may actually hurt your credit rating.

Do not rely solely on my posting.  Do some reading and research.  There are a lot of ins and outs to this, but once you are up to speed, you will be in control when you receive such calls.

If they ignore you, you can take legal action against them.  Keep records of all communications.

Here are some tips -

Never pay a collection agency without the following:

Validation Letter proving that you owe the money and that they have the right to collect it.

Settlement Letter stating what is to be paid, and that this will settle the debt in full without recourse.

When paying them:

Never give them your account number for any financial instrument, checking, savings, debit card, or credit card.

Never send them a personal check.

Never do a "check by phone".

Always pay with a postal money order (USPS - purchased at your post office).

After you pay them:

Keep these records for the rest of your life.  Paid debt has a way of being re-sold to other slimy collection agencies, and you need to be able to prove it was paid.

I was getting calls from this number but called them and asked that they remove my number.  Call the number, select 2 for next available rep and prepare to stay on hold a minute or two and be transferred a couple times.  The first time I tried it I got cut off but I just tried again.  The people I spoke to seemed nice enough.

They are a collection agency called "The Bureaus" and compared to some they were polite and business like.  They may have been nice because I informed them they had called prior to the times outlined in the FDCPA.  According to FDCPA they cannot call before 8:00A.M. consumer time and they called at 7:47 A.M.  If I wanted to I could now file a complaint with the FTC and would quite likely be awarded up to $1000 for the violation. If you are being harassed then fight back.  Know the FDCPA and do not give them any personal information.  Also I found a new website called " fairdebtlawyers.com".  Go there a read about them.  They love taking on this kind of thing no charge to you.

"THE BUREAUS" have come up with a new strategy and have started using a cell phone or cell phones. 954-636-1087 is the cell number they called from and when I answered they had the wrong person and insisted that I was who they thought they were trying to get in touch with. After about 45 seconds of me being polite and trying to convince them that I was not the person they were looking for I grabbed one of those air horns that mount to a can of compressed air and let it fly. Boy did that feel good. I am going to start using that on all of these telemarketers. :)

I live in Orlando. I actually picked up the call and the lady said, "I'm trying to reach Jose < Hispanic name > Jr.". I said I wasn't familiar with that name. Lady said in a discouraged tone, "Huh! Okay." Then she hung up.

This number calls twice a day, every day for the past 5 months!  I have told them over and over again that the person the are trying to reach hasn't lived here in over 10 years.  It is extremely annoying!  What else can I do?

We have been receiving telephone calls for The Bureaus for our son, who is away at school. The recording states that if we are not (my son's name) then hang up, if it is then continue listening.  It states that it is a debt collector and leaves this phone number and nothing else. Our son's identity was STOLEN last year. The number has been called and there is no way to determine what it is about.  PLEASE STOP calling us unless you can give us REAL information so the matter can be cleared up!

Someone at this number calls everyday, including weekends. I've stopped answering because when I do answer, it's either silent or automated. I have no idea what they want and it's very, very frustrating. I'm seriously considering changing my number because I don't know how to make them stop. Has anyone been successful in getting the phone calls stopped?

Tired of getting calls from this # on my cell phone. No messages ever left. Called them back, and never found anything w/ my name or # on the file. Basically told me to answer the phone the next time they call me, and tell them to delete my # that way. Nice.

VERY aggravating!!!

Whatever you do, don't give them any information about yourself...The Bureaus is bad news. Here's Bud Hibb's report on them:  http://www.budhibbs.com/debtcollectorpages/bureaus_the.htm
