Extortion Scam Related to Delinquent Payday Loans
Washington, D.C.
December 07, 2010 FBI National Press Office
(202) 324-3691
The Internet Crime Complaint Center has received many complaints from victims of payday loan telephone collection scams. Callers claim the victim is delinquent in a payday loan and must repay the loan to avoid legal consequences. The callers purport to be representatives of the FBI, Federal Legislative Department, various law firms, or other legitimate-sounding agencies. They claim to be collecting debts for companies such as United Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Advance, U.S. Cash Net, and other Internet check-cashing services.
According to complaints received from the public, the callers have accurate data about victims, including Social Security numbers, dates of birth, addresses, employer information, bank account numbers, and the names and telephone numbers of relatives and friends. How the fraudsters obtained the personal information varies, but in some cases victims have reported they completed online applications for other loans or credit cards before the calls started.
The fraudsters relentlessly call the victim?s home, cell phone, and place of employment. They refuse to provide any details about the alleged payday loans and become abusive when questioned. The callers have threatened victims with legal actions, arrests, and, in some cases, physical violence if they do not pay. In many cases, the callers harass victims? relatives, friends, and employers.

Also, I have been served papers from other debt collectors at my home so this msg that was left on my parents answer machine, seems a little fishy to me.

The "collector" left a message on my parents home answer machine, addressed me by my married name, haven't lived with my parents since 2003, left the number 1-877-937-0564 to call back, saying I was being served. He gave a name of Max Swartz. Tried calling the number back, rang forever, then finally a pre-recorded message: saying, " ext 115 cannot answer your call" has anyone had similar situations to this number.

I just received a call same as others from unknown # leaving the 877 # to call back with a case #. Stated if I didn't call back to verify my social sercurty # they would proceed with legal. Also stated I was the recipant to something of my mother! They also called me by my married name and I haven't been married in three years!

Received an Unknown call on my cell phone. They were looking for my brother, however assumed it was my son. We have not lived together for over 20 years, since I was in my teens. I no longer live in the same state as him and communication between us is rocky at best. Oddly, they were digging to get information on him; as if I would volunteer that information freely. Person on the other end gave the same spiel about "private legal matters", which is a red flag in my book. If you can't tell me what it's about and threaten legal actions, then it isn't legit to begin with. If you're collecting, say you are and we'll move on from there. Gave me a file # and phone # to call back. Oddly, the number they gave is to a Walmart Money Card. (Ref: https://www.walmartmoneycard.com/AcctMgmt/Con ... /ContactUs.aspx) which you can see, the number is clearly right there. How and why would "Asset Verification Services" be associated with a pre-loaded debit card, I have absolutely no idea. There's no credit associated with said service, you have to pay to "load" the card in the first place and only have those funds that you give to spend.
