Debt Collector
First got a call on a thursday morning  from a lady saying iam going to get served court papers on Monday and left me a number to call.  I called like an idiot something about debt to Cashnet from 2010..... seriously!!! well, they said i would be served and now they would also collect attorney fees and court costs turning a $650 debt to over $2000. Enough to scare me so they said if I had $300 they would settle now.  I didnt and set up payment areangements and put CC on file with them to deduct payment areangements and whada you know they took out $240 right away.  B*****DS!!!  THIS COMPANY IS A SCAM.  DO NOT BE IGNORANT AND GIVE THEM ANY INFORMATION.  TELL THEM TO SEND YOU INFORMATION BY MAIL!!!!

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC), the nation's consumer protection agency, is warning consumers to be on the alert for scam artists posing as debt collectors. It may be hard to tell the difference between a legitimate debt collector and a fake one. Sometimes a fake collector may even have some of your personal information, like a bank account number. A caller may be a fake debt collector if he:

?is seeking payment on a debt for a loan you do not recognize;
?refuses to give you a mailing address or phone number;
?asks you for personal financial or sensitive information; or
?exerts high pressure to try to scare you into paying, such as threatening to have you arrested or to report you to a law enforcement agency.

If you think that a caller may be a fake debt collector:

?Ask the caller for his name, company, street address, and telephone number. Tell the caller that you refuse to discuss any debt until you get a written "validation notice." The notice must include the amount of the debt, the name of the creditor you owe, and your rights under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.
If a caller refuses to give you all of this information, do not pay! Paying a fake debt collector will not always make them go away. They may make up another debt to try to get more money from you.?Stop speaking with the caller. If you have the caller's address, send a letter demanding that the caller stop contacting you, and keep a copy for your files. By law, real debt collectors must stop calling you if you ask them to in writing.
?Do not give the caller personal financial or other sensitive information. Never give out or confirm personal financial or other sensitive information like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number unless you know whom you're dealing with. Scam artists, like fake debt collectors, can use your information to commit identity theft ? charging your existing credit cards, opening new credit card, checking, or savings accounts, writing fraudulent checks, or taking out loans in your name.
?Contact your creditor. If the debt is legitimate ? but you think the collector may not be ? contact your creditor about the calls. Share the information you have about the suspicious calls and find out who, if anyone, the creditor has authorized to collect the debt.
?Report the call. Contact the FTC and your state Attorney General's office with information about suspicious callers. Many states have their own debt collection laws in addition to the federal FDCPA. Your Attorney General's office can help you determine your rights under your state's law.

They must must send you a letter by USPS within 5 days of talking to you. Do not ever except a email from a CA. It is not legal binding. You did the right thing by calling and saying that you will not pay it. An if he tells you that he can not provide anything that states their name that is a big red flag.
An letter must have their name on it with the amount owed and the orginal creditor, account number and phone number.

I received a call Friday from someone named Mike Crowley stating he will be serving me with legal papers. I had no idea what for so he gave me the # 877-957-3538 to the Bristol Group. I spoke with some of the representatives and they told me it was for a loan with Cashnet USA. I was scared out of mind so like a dummy I set up payment arrangements to save myself the embarrassment however after some investigating today things didn't seem to add up. So I changed my banking info and notified them that I wanted something in writing. They said they would send me and email and when they did it did not state their name anywhere on the paper nor the amount that hey claimed I owed and he said he would not be able to provide me with anything that states their name. That very odd. If they are collecting on behalf of the original creditor then there should be some documentation stating that they could so. He was a little frustrated when I said I can not pay them the money that they wanted so he said I wasted their time and they will just send out the documents for me to be served.

A guy named Mark Davis keeps calling from a private # leaves messages about serving me legal documents to my home and work place. He calls several times. When I called back to this number 866-789-0537 I asked where I was calling and they said Bristol Group. I have their voice mails still on my answering machine.

A CA will not deliver court papers to your house.  That would need to be done by an official process server.

It is either a scam or a CA trying to scare you.

Send them a DV letter.  If he told you they had court documents and doesn't produce them they are violating the FDCPA.

If they leave you voicemails, save those messages.  Then take them to to your local courthouse and file a small claim suit for $1000.

The Bristol Group, some sort of collection agency. Calls incessantly from blocked numbers, but then tells you to call this number. They make threats saying they will "serve you legal documents" at work....of course they never show up..... They will contact you, your family, and employer.

Reported to FTC.
