Just got a call. Park Shore BMW in North Vancouver advising me of a customer appreciation sale. They've gotten really aggressive, sending me text messages and leaving voicemail.

8779770987 this is the number they gave me for the "Paralyzed veterans of America." This is a SCAM! I've donated clothing several times, and now I'm worried about where my clothes are.  I became suspicious because he wouldn't answer me when I asked him where the clothes go. He became very nervous and gave this number that brought me here.

Now let us give the information that we can on this company, from someone who worked there.

They are not Volunteers

The company is Merchandise Pickup Services. Their website is:

http://www.clothingpickupstl.com/

They call for the following charities:

In St Louis - Childrens Home Society, Red Cross, Womens Another Chance, St John Bosco

In Texas - Rainbow House, Texas Paralyzed Veterans, Adapt of Texas

In Florida - Red Cross (never have they collected for Salvation Army, got to love people who dont listen to the person and speculate or make up things)

The calls are made by computers, with people on the other end to ask if you would like to donate any used clothing or small household items. (Most people who say no one is there hang up too soon)

When they call, they do not need to "fish" for information, they have it in front of them (address as listed, etc), and do not ask for money.

Now as for the calls, there are options to either Answering Machine/Busy (which calls back), no (which is they wont call back til next pickup time), yes (which is a yes for a pickup, and they will call back as a reminder the night before), and Irate/Remove from list

They changed the rules recently on who is removed from list.  Now you have to SPECIFY to be removed from the list (which does for a few years).  Or Specify you are on the no call list, or other things like that.  Saying you are not interested will not do it, and it just is hit no.  Hanging up on us will not just do it, it will be a no.  Cussing at us till not do it either, it will be a no. You HAVE to ANSWER and say remove from list, and we have to.  Call the number and complain also, and have them remove you from the list as well.

As for call backs, Yes, they are frequent. If we do not get a person or answering machine, or the person we need to talk to. We hit call back, and it dials later.  We do that til like 7pm (8pm Florida time) when we THEN can leave a message to set out your items.  They are stupid enough besides us calling, to have an automated system ALSO doing recorded messages as reminders.

The hours of shifts are 8-12pm (9-1pm Florida), 5-9pm (6-10pm Floriida) with EARLIER Calls on Mondays and Saturdays.  Saturdays are forced on the employees.

As for what they do with the items, they are picked up and sold thru stores, such as Family Value.  100% does NOT go to the charities. First they pay the pickup drivers, the people selling in the stores, office management, and of course the small employees - the solicitors. (Which btw, they pay 7.50$ an hour, plus a bonus on YES pickups that are successful, and .25cents per email collecting for their mailing list for pickups.  No the emails are not sold to others and are safe with the company.  They do not offer raises, even if there longer than a year or two).

They have a high turn around because they keep changing the rules, thus people may hit the wrong button and get fired (and refuse to pay unemployment), and do not give a chance to fix it half the time, unless you know right away. They do not have any hiring standards, as they have hired ex cons, people on probation, and even sex offenders, as well as foreign kids that do not know what to do half the time.

Now the plus side is, you do get a tax receipt for your donations, which is blank and you can fill out anything.  Bad side is if you do not label your items, it does not get picked up.  If you put it out 8am, it may not get picked up.

Now remember, if you want them to STOP, you have to answer then tell them to remove from the list.  Not cuss, not hang up, not say you are not interested, or that you always donate elsewhere. You have to SAY REMOVE ME FROM THE LIST for them to stop (or Please do not call here anymore).  Do not take it out on the people on the other end, they do not know how often they call people. Blame the office, managers, and more.  The callers are just people trying to do a job, and its not their fault the office doesnt care about who they call.  If you WANT to DONATE, that is file, it can take about as much as a few minutes to say yes, confirm your address, and give an email if you want. (If you are interested in donating and do not want the CALLS all the time, then give an email and ask for EMAIL ONLY). You can also ask to limit the calls to once a year, twice a year, every other month, which can help too.

IF you want more info. You can call this 800 number, or call 314-416-0320 that is the employee line also, they also are located at 2930 Telegraph Road in St Louis 63125.  Don't be stupid about it. They are not a con, they are not fishing for personal info as they already have the address and everything.  They are asking for old clothes and any other small junk you do not want.  If you want to complain, call them.  The callers that call are not responsible and are more innocent than anything. You got to realize how you people are when you answer too and act like a$$holes.  If you donate, answer on the reminder calls, and thats it.  If you are tired of the calls, dont just sit there like idiots, answer (and dont be a jerk) and asked to be removed from the list. Simple as that.

This is a group that picks up for the RC in Tampa( my area) They may pick up for other charities as well as they are a volunteer organization trying to assist in the community....- I have donated for years and the reason they call until they get an answer is it is run by volunteers and donations-Too many no shows and non confirmed pick ups are expensive both in gas funds and volunteer time. Why is it that no one answers the phone? If you did then it would only take once -wait a few- it is a call center- again run by volunteers donating hours- those of you wining have probably never contributed time...Sad state when this is what is bothering folks...

They are legitimate. After I was contacted by them the first time, and they asked for donations for Red Cross, I called our Tampa Red Cross. The confirmed that this number and organization is indeed affiliated with Red Cross as their donations collection support. The night and day before my pick up, they called several times; I got smart and answered: they were just confirming my scheduled pick up. Also, the request for an e-mail address was legit, too. They sent a reminder via e-mail... Guess they need to do some market research to fing better avenues for contacting donors, but charities rely on volunteers and generous monetary donations...

Got a call from 877-977-0987 this morning-lady identified herself as "American Red Cross" verifying that clothing etc. would be out front for pickup tomorrow. We never spoke to anyone prior to this call, and appears to be a scam capitalizing on the Haiti disaster relief.

They keep calling every 5 minutes.  No ID on the caller ID.  If they truly "are" related to the Red Cross, Childrens' Home Society, or any other charity, they SHOULD leave a message.  I'd probably answer it the next time. But 12 calls between 4:30pm and 9:00pm (so far), with not one message --- forget it, I'll take my donations to Goodwill or Salvation Army.

We are getting repeat calls from this number.  It may be the red cross, but last time we left the items out at the time and date they asked and the truck just drove by.  We emailed and called but they never came.  Now the items sat outside all day in the elements for nothing.

Called me FOURTEEN TIMES the night of Jan 19, 2011. Eight calls in last half hour, last few calls were at 8:58p, 9:00p, 9:01p. Usually no one on the other line. I called the number back. The recorded voice told me to leave my name, address, phone and zip code, which I did (stupid?), and let them know that i am canceling my charitable donation of clothes to be left on the front porch. This action did not have the desired affect of stopping the robo-calls, they just seemed to accelerate.

I called bright house, my phone carrier, to ask how i could block their number. Bright house has no way I can do that.

I will no longer donate clothes/items for pickup, since it means getting robo-calls from this outfit.

ps - finally found where to type the validation code when leaving a comment... it barely shows up on my screen, please redesign.

This number has called me 4 times tonight. Since it did not show ID, I didn't answer but I looked it up on Google and now I'm sure it's the group that called about a month ago asking for clothing donations for ARC.  They need to show an ID if they want me to answer.

I received a call from an unavailable number stating that they're American Red Cross looking for donation items for pick up.  They called back with this number, 210-431-3726 and looks like its a Thrift Store and some people reported them as scam.  Then I got another call from this number.   Appears that sometimes they say they're for Children's hospital and sometimes they say they're for Veterans, and sometimes they say they're for American Red Cross.  I wouldn't trust them.  I'll just drop off my items at the Salvation Army.  They even asked if I have an e-mail to give to them.  NO WAY I WOULD!  and they better NOT call me back.
